Beaminster School Goes Solar

When Beaminster School reopens on 7 September with its first full complement of students since last November, it will have in place a new source of electricity for lighting, computers and cooking, cheaper than power from the grid.

During the summer holiday, contractors for Dorset Community Energy are busy installing 112 kW of solar panels on five different parts of the school’s roof.
This project, costing about £80,000, is funded 60% by equity shareholders of Dorset Community Energy, and 40% by the Low Carbon Fund run by Dorset Council with money from the European Regional Development Fund.
The school will use most of the power from the panels, equivalent to the electricity needs of 30 households. Any surplus power at weekends or holidays will go to the grid.
A web-link will enable school staff and students to check performance of the panels and monitor the school’s use of electricity.
This is the first major renewable energy scheme in Beaminster – highly encouraging as the ECO Group campaign for energy saving and the creation of renewable energy in this area.

Get Your Ideas Included in the Government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan

The Government is running a public consultation, which is actually a fairly short and friendly questionnaire. No expert knowledge is needed, and you’re not expected to write an essay – the spaces for answers are just few lines long, though they can expand if you have more to say.
The closing date to have your say is Monday, 31st August 2020. Your views will assist in drafting the plan, and deciding on the steps the Government take to decarbonise transport.

The current policies to decarbonise transport don’t go far enough.  Specifically, electric cars – while important – aren’t a silver bullet: we also need to be making fewer journeys by car and more by public transport, on foot and by bike.
At Campaign for Better Transport, they hope that as many people as possible will take this opportunity to speak up for sustainable transport. To show how much we care about buses, trains and trams, walking and cycling, car-sharing and zero-emission vehicles.   You can also remind the Government too that sometimes we’d like to travel less!  You can suggest whatever you want.
