Beaminster School Goes Solar

When Beaminster School reopens on 7 September with its first full complement of students since last November, it will have in place a new source of electricity for lighting, computers and cooking, cheaper than power from the grid.

During the summer holiday, contractors for Dorset Community Energy are busy installing 112 kW of solar panels on five different parts of the school’s roof.
This project, costing about £80,000, is funded 60% by equity shareholders of Dorset Community Energy, and 40% by the Low Carbon Fund run by Dorset Council with money from the European Regional Development Fund.
The school will use most of the power from the panels, equivalent to the electricity needs of 30 households. Any surplus power at weekends or holidays will go to the grid.
A web-link will enable school staff and students to check performance of the panels and monitor the school’s use of electricity.
This is the first major renewable energy scheme in Beaminster – highly encouraging as the ECO Group campaign for energy saving and the creation of renewable energy in this area.
