The oldest rivalry in international football … At 8pm on ITV this evening, England play Scotland in their 2nd match of the UEFA EURO Cup at Wembley Stadium. The teams have not faced each other since a pulsating 2-2 draw at Hampden Park in 2017, a match which saw three goals in the final six minutes!
Gareth Southgate, his team and the English fans are all confident of victory having beat Croatia 1-0 last Sunday with a goal scored by Manchester City Forward, Raheem Sterling. At their 10th attempt, this was the first time England have ever won their opening match.
England are hoping that it will be a repeat of the classic encounter between England and Scotland at Euro 96. England won that day 2-0 with goals from Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne.
The Scots however, their first appearance in a major tournament in 23 years last week, were reminded of the disappointment of watching Scotland at the World Cup in Argentina 43 years ago as Patrik Schick from the Czech Republic put two goals in the back of Scotland’s net – one of them extraordinary from the halfway line. Steve Clarke and his team have a lot to do!
