Month: May 2020
The Eta Aquariids Meteor shower peaks 5-7 May
The weather is expected to improve this week with clear skies ๐ This gives us all the opportunity to watch some shooting stars! The Eta Aquarids is one of two meteor showers caused by debris from Halley’s Comet. (The Earth passes through Halley’s path around the Sun a second time in October, creating the Orionid meteor shower towards the end of the month.) They get their name because they appear to originate from the constellation Aquarius, found in the southern sky.ย Looking South will therefore give you a better chance – but you can see them from all directions!
Don’t expect to walk out your back door, look up and see them! You need to allow your eyes 15-20 minutes to adjust to the light – so wrap up warm, take a blanket – get comfortable because once your ‘eye is in’ – you’ll see lots. Enjoy!
