The BIG Butterfly Count 17th July – 9th August 2020

BIG Butterfly Count on iPhoneToday, July 17th, sees the start of the Butterfly Conservation’s BIG Butterfly Count.

The BIG Butterfly Count is a UK-wide survey aimed at helping to assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies (and some day-flying moths) we see. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies.

They are asking that between Friday 17 July and Sunday 9 August, you choose a place to spot butterflies and moths. Each day, watch for just 15 minutes.
Using the free ID chart – identify and record the butterflies you spot.

It’s very easy for you to take part:

(You will have to give your name and email address which you’ll then need to sign in with when you submit your counts).
You then add your counts on their website or using the app.
You can view their  interactive map to see how your data is contributing to conservation science and research.

Super Saturdays at The Tangerine Cafe in Beaminster

Tangerine Cafe, BeaminsterWeekends are changing at Tangerine Cafe.

An informal cafe with gallery and books, they offer a meal of the day, soup of the day, salads, sandwiches, paninis, cakes, scones and a children’s menu.

They will start off with the first of our brand new Super Saturdays with Kellie and Debs who will be offering mouthwatering homemade beef or veggie burgers with homemade potato wedges and salad, succulent ham, egg and wedges, gooey Brie, bacon and cranberry paninis and lots more including cakes and scones.

Then on Sunday they’ll be making their lovely brunches and lunches to include Cashew nut roast and Roast Lamb with all the trimmings.

The church is socially distanced, with strict hygiene protocols in place. You will be asked to sanitise your hands on entry and exit, we will keep contact details for track and trace and the doors will be open to promote good air flow. So dress for a chilly church, even in July.

Fresh Eggs Daily

Fresh EggsLiving where we do, many of us know where farmers and others leave their fresh eggs out on a daily basis.  There’s Chris Sewell at Manor Farm up Common Water Lane,  there’s the Curtis’ Moorelands Farm down at Hursey and Alison Curtis brings her eggs into the Comrades Hall when the Post Office services are there.
Now we also have Tina Samways at Little Court in Broadwindsor who offers:

  • Chicken eggs various colours and sizes, laid daily by our ladies who are very well loved and looked after.
  • £1 per half dozen
  • Please note we do sell out quite fast so it will be on a first come first served basis.

Eat Out to Help Out - Rishi SunakAs well as cutting the VAT rate to 5% for hospitality and tourism sectors from July 15 until January 12, 2021, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said everyone in the country will get the discount in an effort to get customers back into restaurants, cafes and pubs.
There will be a ‘simple website’ for those participating businesses to register on Monday, 13th July.

Meals eaten at any participating business from Monday to Wednesday during August will be 50% cheaper, up to a maximum discount of £10 per head for everyone (Adults & Children).

  • It covers any eat-in meal at any participating restaurant, cafe, pub or other eligible food service establishment across the UK during the month of August.
  • It can be used for food and non-alcoholic drinks.
  • It can be used “unlimited times”

This is only one scheme the Government have introduced to help improve the economy as part of their #PlanForJobs recovery plan.  They are also offering to pay businesses to hire young apprentices, with a payment of £2,000 and introducing a brand-new bonus to hire apprentices aged 25 and over, with a payment of £1,500.
