Buy Your Handmade Facemasks Locally
Wearing a face covering will become mandatory in all shops and supermarkets in England from 24 July 2020. Shop workers, however are excluded.
Those who fail to wear a mask will face a fine of up to £100. This will be reduced to £50 if people pay within 14 days. The rules will be enforced by the police and not the shop workers.
There are several people who live in the village making face coverings at home, some as a business and others with their proceeds, or a percentage of, going to a charitable organisation.
- There is Leoni Rawle at Redlands Lane, who is offering a wide range of 100% cotton fabrics with over 70 different designs to choose from. The photograph shows Toni Rodway from The Painted Nail wearing one of Leoni’s facemasks (with sausage dogs on it!).
There is a sleeve/pocket in the lining for optional addition of filters.
There is also a small metal strip to fit the contour of the face for a more comfortable fit and prevents glasses from steaming up.
Made to order, machine washable, the choice of sizes are: Child, Teenager, Small Adult & Adult.
They are £5 each with a discount for orders of 10 or more.
If unable to collect, Leoni offers First Class postage at £1 for one, £1.30 for two or more.
Message Leoni on Facebook HERE or on her mobile: 07724 612174. - There is Jacqui Sewell who has been selling and continues to sell masks at the Post Office on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Masks made by Robin Loudon are £2 each with proceeds to the Post Office Group & Jacqui’s pleated Masks at £2.50 each with 50p each proceeds going to The Post Office Group.
If you’re unable to get to the Post Office, contact Jacqui through her Facebook page HERE or by email: jacquisewell@me.com. - There is Linzi, who operates her Handmade By Linzi business mainly through Facebook. A selection of her many fabrics are shown below. Linzi offers cotton face coverings, again, handmade to order – £3 each plus p&p £1.40. They measure approx 22cm x 12cm (Adults) with Teen and Child sizes available too.
You can message Linzi through her Facebook page HERE or by email: handmadebylinzi@hotmail.com
- There is Lynne Staff who has been making masks to order for those in need and supplying some to our Community Store for which a donation is requested. You can contact Lynne on 01308 8868584.
- There is Sheila Deane from Fullers who has been doing an absolutely marvellous job making masks for the NHS and supplying the over 60’s and infirm throughout the village for no remuneration whatsoever. Well done Sheila!
- Broadwindsor Community Store will be selling 3-ply masks from Friday, 24th at £1.50. Shop manager, Kevin Madder-Smith has said that anyone going to the shop without a mask will not be allowed entry but staff can serve them from the door.

Summer Family Fun from Beaminster Team Churches
As an alternative to their usual summer activities which cannot proceed due to social distancing, Beaminster Team churches are putting together activity packs for families to help ease some of the summer holiday boredom. Each pack contains suggestions and resources for crafts, science experiments, art projects and activities themed around four bible stories. There will be accompanying videos on their website.
Most activities are achievable by children on their own if they can read the instructions. Younger children might require more support and some activities are for the whole family to enjoy. There is a weekly challenge to complete and send in a photo to win a prize.
Free resource packs will be available from 27th July. You need to register to receive one of these. Please complete the form HERE.
They are also putting some suggestions in the pack for the family to pray together and talk about God together. If you are interested in growing faith at home do look at the links below which they believe might give you some suggestions. They are also happy to help support you.

Fresh Eggs Daily
Living where we do, many of us know where farmers and others leave their fresh eggs out on a daily basis. There’s Chris Sewell at Manor Farm up Common Water Lane, there’s the Curtis’ Moorelands Farm down at Hursey and Alison Curtis brings her eggs into the Comrades Hall when the Post Office services are there.
Now we also have Tina Samways at Little Court in Broadwindsor who offers:
- Chicken eggs various colours and sizes, laid daily by our ladies who are very well loved and looked after.
- £1 per half dozen
- Please note we do sell out quite fast so it will be on a first come first served basis.
Message Tina through her Facebook Page HERE to place an order.

The Change in TV Licences for those aged over 75yrs.
There are approximately 4.5 million people in the UK benefit from free TV licences by being over the age of 75. This has been in place since Nov. 2000. Now, changes to the over 75 TV licence will come into effect from 1st August 2020.
** No one will be expected to pay for a new licence until they have been contacted by a letter from TV Licensing and either claimed a free licence or agreed a payment plan. For now, if you are over 75 ignore any emails or letters you receive asking you to pay your TV licence as they may be a scam. **
Under the new scheme, anyone aged 75 or over receiving Pension Credit will be eligible to apply for a free TV Licence, paid for by the BBC. Pension Credit can be in the name of the licence holder, or in their partner’s name if they are a couple living at the same address.
If Pension Credit is not received – either in the licence holder’s name or their partner’s name if they are a couple – the TV Licence will need to be paid for.
If you already have a free over 75 licence you will be covered until 31 July 2020. You don’t need to do anything just yet. They will be writing to all free over 75 licence holders from early August to let you know how you may be affected and what you will need to do next.
Applying now (if your birthday is before 1 August 2020).
To apply for a free over 75 TV Licence to cover you until 31 July 2020, please have the following details ready:
- Your date of birth
- National Insurance number
- Name and address including postcode
- Current TV Licence number
You will get a short-term licence to cover you until your 75th birthday. This lets you pay for the months you have left until you turn 75. You’ll then receive a free over 75 licence to cover you until 31 July 2020.
If you’re already 75, or will turn 75 before 1 August 2020, you can apply for a free TV Licence to cover you up until 31 July 2020 using the form HERE.
You don’t automatically get a free over 75 TV Licence when you turn 75 – you must apply for one.
You can apply for a free over 75 TV Licence if you:
- are the current licence holder,
- want to transfer the licence into your name,
- want to apply on behalf of a friend or relative
If there is more than one person aged 75 living at your address, one licence covers your household, regardless of who lives there. So only one of you needs to apply.
If you turn 75 on or after 1 August 2020 and you are not receiving Pension Credit, they will not be able to issue you a free licence under the new policy. Therefore, it is recommended that you continue paying for the licence you currently have, rather than getting a short-term licence.
AgeUK handed in 634.334 signatures in their petition to save free TV licences. You can still object by writing to West Dorset’s MP, Chris Loder at chris.loder.mp@parliament.uk or messaging him through his Facebook page HERE or Tweet him a message on Twitter HERE
