Ballygar, Dublin, Ireland, 1967: close friends Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates) and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) win the trip of a lifetime – a pilgrimage to Lourdes. With each woman desperately in need of a personal miracle, the trip seems like an answer to all their prayers. But when they are joined by Chrissie (Laura Linney), returning to Dublin after decades in America, deep wounds from their past are re-opened and bitter truths exposed. As they confront one another and embrace their shared past, the group reckon with revelations that will change them forever.

Broadwindsor Film Club Goes Ahead – Friday, 16th September

At 7.30pm at the Comrades Hall on Friday, 16th September, Broadwindsor’s Community Film Club will be showing Downton Abbey: A New Era (PG) which runs for 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Downton Abbey: A New Era is a 2022 historical drama film and the sequel to the 2019 film Downton Abbey. Both films were written by Julian Fellowes, the creator and writer of the television series of the same name, with the sequel being directed by Simon Curtis, replacing Michael Engler who directed the first film. Music by John Lunn.

The Crawley family goes on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the dowager countess’s newly inherited villa.

Leonard (Mark Rylance), a master English tailor who’s ended up in Chicago, operates a corner tailor shop with his assistant (Zoey Deutch) where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: a family of vicious gangsters. One night, two killers (Dylan O’Brien, Johnny Flynn) knock on his door in need of a favour – and Leonard is thrust onto the board in a deadly game of deception and murder.

Broadwindsor Community Film Club presents West Side Story (12) – 156 mins. An American musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Tony Kushner.

An adaptation of the 1957 musical of the same name, the film tells the tale of forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Music by the legendary Leonard Bernstein.

‘Belfast’ (12) – Drimpton 8th June, Broadwindsor 17th June

Both Community Film Clubs are showing ‘Belfast’ this month. It is rated 12 and lasts 94 minutes.

Written and directed by Academy Award winner Kenneth Branagh, starring Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Jude Hill, Dame Judi Dench, Ciaran Hinds & Colin Morgan.

Belfast is a poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy’s childhood amid the music and social tumult of the late 1960s. Buddy’s family lives in a largely Protestant district with a few Catholic families, but one day his community and everything he thought he understood about life is suddenly turned upside down. Buddy’s family gets caught in the mayhem and must decide to stay or leave the only place they have ever called home. Through it all, his passionate parents (Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan) and quick-witted grandparents (Academy Award winner Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds) keep the joy alive through music and the magic of movies in this feel good story that reminds us that no matter how far you go, you never forget where you came from.

The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public’s perception of cats forever. Moving from the late 1800s through to the 1930s, we follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with this wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy).
