Ascension Day 2021

Today, Thursday 13th May, is Ascension Day.  It is not a Public Holiday in the UK, Canada, the USA or Australia – but it is a Public Holiday in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Indonesia, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Vanuatu* (in the South Pacific Ocean). In general, Ascension Day services are positive and uplifting.

*Although 90% of the Indonesian population is Muslim, Ascension Day is a major holiday, and Indonesians who are not Christian often use the holiday to relax. Ascension Day’s traditions are participated in by both Protestants and Catholics in Indonesia. The major Christian event is the 40th day of Easter.

As recorded in the Bible, this is a day when Christians celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven.  The celebration of the Ascension Day of Jesus Christ always falls on a Thursday as it is celebrated exactly 39 days after Easter Sunday.
The next three Ascension Days shall occur on:

  • 26th May, 2022
  • 18th May, 2023
  • 9th May, 2024

It was a joy to see staff and pupils again, to meet the reception class for the first time and to be connected with nature as we worshipped. And even better – we can potentially use the facility for Forest Church. My heart sings. Alleluia.
Lord God, you are awesome and we love you. Amen.”

Plant A Tree For Mothers Day – Sunday, 14th March

With just a week until Mother’s Day, some may have consumed enough chocolate throughout Lockdown so why not consider something a bit different?  The National Trust are giving you the opportunity to dedicate a single sapling or up to half a hectare of woodland to your Mum this Mother’s Day and you’ll be helping to support their aim to plant 20 million trees by 2030:

  • £5 will buy a tree sapling.
  • £50 will buy 10 tree saplings.
  • £250 will plant 50 square metres.
  • £500 will plant 100 sq.m.
  • £2,500 will plant one fottball pitch (half a hectare!).

You can choose your amount and choose if it is in memory of someone or a celebration. At the moment, you are unable to ‘tag’ a specific tree, or choose a location for a tree to be planted. However, they have the ambition to plant 20 million trees by 2030, and your donation today can directly help create a living memorial that benefits nature for everyone, for ever. 🙂

Donate & Dedicate Your Tree HERE.

National Trust LogoWith care, attention and natural progression, small saplings grow into happy, healthy woodlands full of wonder. A lot goes into nurturing new life – and Mum’s know it!

International Women’s Day, Monday 8th March

The theme of International Women’s Day 2021 is ‘Choose To Challenge’.  Their statement is: “This states that the women are responsible for their own thoughts and actions everyday and they challenge the world everyday. The theme further signifies that women can choose to challenge gender bias and inequality in the world. People need to celebrate women’s achievements and also make world a better place to live in with equality.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th.

27 countries (mainly former Soviet republics) have adopted International Women’s Day as a national holiday, and it is widely observed in several others.

For most of the countries who observe this holiday, if the 8th falls on a weekend, it will be moved to the following Monday. If it falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, several countries will bridge the holiday to the weekend by declaring an additional public holiday on the Monday or Friday – though often this is compensated for by making a Saturday a working day.

In China since 2014, women are entitled to a half-day holiday for Women’s Day. In Madagascar and Nepal, the day is also an official women-only holiday.

International Women’s Day was first established at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. German women’s rights activist and Marxist theorist Clara Zetkin was the one who tabled the idea.

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark celebrated the holiday for the first time on March 19th 1911, with the Soviet Union the first to make it a public holiday in 1917.  The date of 8th March was adopted internationally in 1921.

In 1977, the United Nations declared 8th March as International Women’s Day, a day each year when the world should celebrate, recognize and remember women and the accomplishments they have made to society. Each year has a different theme.

Purple, green and white are the colours of International Women’s Day.

  • Purple signifies justice and dignity.
  • Green symbolizes hope.
  • White represents purity, albeit a controversial concept.

The colours originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.

International Men’s Day…

is on November and their objectives include a focus on mens’ and boys’ health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality and highlighting positive male role models.

Celebrate Imbolc On 1st February

Imbolc (or Imbolg) is also called St. Brigid’s Day and is celebrated on 1st February each year and is a Gaelic (Irish) traditional festival marking the beginning of Spring. It is approximately halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Time to celebrate the lengthening days and the early signs of spring.

Imbolc is one of the four traditional Gaelic seasonal festivals. The others being Beltane (1st May), Lughnasa (1st August) and Samhain (31 Oct).  As well as signifying the beginning of Spring, Imbolc is also associated with the onset of the lambing season and the blossoming of blackthorn.

St. Brigid was a Christianization of the goddess of fertility, Brigid.  St. Brigid was also invoked to protect homes and livestock. The holiday was a festival of the hearth and home. It is time to ‘spring clean’. To receive the blessings of St. Brigid, people would make a bed for her and leave her food and drink. Items of clothing would be left outside for her to bless.  The lighting of candles and fires represents the return of warmth and the increasing power of the Sun over the coming months.  For Christians, particularly in Ireland, it is a time to feast!  Although many of its customs died out in the 20th century, it is still observed and in some places it has been revived as a cultural event.

Outdoor Christmas Carols – Tomorrow (Sunday) at 3.30pm

With no carol singing being able to take place at the White Lion as is usual this time of year, Rev. Jo invites you to a socially distanced outdoor gathering to sing Christmas Carols tomorrow afternoon at 3.30pm in Bernards’ Place by the square in Broadwindsor.

Christmas GarlandThe six carols to be sung are:

  1.  O Come All Ye Faithful
  2.  Once in Royal David’s City
  3.  O Little Town Of Bethlehem (Nat King Cole)
  4.  Away In A Manger
  5.  Ding Dong Merrily On High
  6.  Hark The Herald Angels Sing (3 verses)

The lyrics for all six carols are below for those who use their mobile phones and can be downloaded HERE as a pdf for you to print out if you wish.  The weather is forecast to be dry at this time but perhaps bring an umbrella and do dress warmly.Christmas GarlandO Come All Ye Faithful

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant
O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem
O come and behold Him, born the King of Angels

O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord.

Sing choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
Sing all ye citizens of heaven above
Glory to God in the highest.

O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord.

Once in Royal David’s City

Once in Royal David’s City
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her Baby
In a manger for His bed.
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little Child.

He came down to earth from heaven,
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall.
With the poor and mean and lowly
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

Not in that poor lowly stable
With the oxen standing by
We shall see him but in heaven
Set at God’s right hand on high
Where like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

O Little town of Bethlehem (Nat King Cole)

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God our King
And peace to men on earth

Away in a Manger

Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down His sweet head
The stars in the sky
Look down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
‘Til morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me, I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to Heaven
To live with Thee there

Ding Dong Merrily On High

Ding dong merrily on high,
In heaven the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky
Is riven with angel singing
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!

E’en so here below, below,
Let steeple bells be swungen,
And “Io, io, io!”
By priest and people sungen
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!

Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers,
May you beautifully rhyme
Your eve’time song, ye singers
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria Hosanna in excelsis!

Hark the Herald Angels (3 verses)

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!
Christ, by highest heaven adored
Christ, the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of the Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King
Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all He brings
Risen with healing in His wings
Mild He lay His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Happy St. George’s Day!

St George’s Day in England remembers St George, England’s patron saint.
The anniversary of his death, which is on April 23rd, is seen as England’s national day.

According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.
While many Christians observe St George’s Day, it is not a UK bank holiday. St George’s Day was once celebrated as widely as Christmas but these celebrations diminished by the end of the 18th century after England had united with Scotland.
St George might be hailed as a national hero, but he was actually born more than 2,000 miles away. He is thought to have been born in Cappodocia (modern day Turkey) and to have died in Lydda (modern day Israel) in the Roman province of Palestine in AD 303.
King Edward III made him the Patron Saint of England when he formed the Order of the Garter in St. George’s name in 1350. The cult of the Saint was further advanced by King Henry V, at the battle of Agincourt in northern France.
In HIS Oxford Dictionary Of Saints, David Hugh Farmer explains that St George was adopted as patron saint in the Middle Ages by England and Catalonia, as well as by Venice, Genoa and Portugal, because he was the personification of the ideals of Christian chivalry.

Celebrate with a traditional English dinner!
