Please! Keep Your Dog On A Lead & Under Control!

Lambing season will soon be upon us. Indeed there are already a few prancing by their mothers already!

Broadwindsor.Org has reported twice in this first month of 2023, cases of sheep worrying and death: first at Hursey and then at Common Water Lane.  It’s alarming having to reiterate to those who live within our community and yet take no heed.

Only yesterday, an elderly villager walking her two dogs down to Hursey encountered another dog walker with two dogs leaving Hursey Common. Although the individual leaving had put the leads on the two dogs, “the youngest of these must have either slipped or been released from its lead because it barrelled at speed straight past me up to her (dog) and started attacking her – tearing lumps of fur out of her. I walked as swiftly as possible moving toward the fighting pair with my stick raised which, along with the second individual shouting its name, eventually made the thing (dog) run back to her at the gate.”
“The woman shouted her apologies, explained he was still young and hadn’t yet learned ‘manners’, then added that’s why she had put him on the lead.”

This prompted our elderly villager to request it be highlighted that it’s not only sheep and lambs… “owners of any dog which had demonstrated unmistakably aggressive behaviour, should be more responsible and kinder to others by keeping their animal on a lead at all times or make it wear a muzzle when it was off lead.”.

Please be a responsible dog owner 🙂

Sheep Worrying At Hursey

The photo shows the children’s ‘show sheep’ Izzy and Whizzy who live next to Hursey Common. The farmers who own the field next to Hursey Common this morning witnessed a dog worrying their sheep.

The farmer gave chase and after a lot of running, saw it off back into the football field.  He met with the owners who apologised but appeared to the farmer to be totally unconcerned.

They are unaware if this is happening on a regular basis as they are only up there once a day to check them but are now very concerned.
They are aware people use the football field as a place to run their dogs but dogs still need to be kept under control.

The children would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to them.

Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, if a dog worries sheep on agricultural land, the person in charge of the dog is guilty of an offence. The Act considers sheep worrying to include: attacking sheep. chasing them in a way that may cause injury, suffering, abortion or loss of produce.

The farmers thank you for your attention.

Local Farmer Loses Lamb To Dog

* Please keep your dog secure in fields *

Local farmers, Neil & Rachel Hayball at Speckets Knapp Lamb have their sheep graze between Broadwindsor and Pilsdon pen.
Tragically yesterday, an out of control dog killed a 10 month old lamb that they have been nurturing along with the rest of the flock since birth.
An angry Rachel posted the picture of the dead lamb on social media stating “THIS is what happens when you fail to keep your dog on lead or secure within your property. . . . Before anyone asks whether I am sure it was a dog – yes I am.  I’ve just found dog foot prints and the injuries to the lamb are consistent with a dog attack.”
Rachel continued “Please be aware that if we catch a dog in with our sheep and we can’t get hold of it it WILL be shot as per UK law.
Dorset Police have been informed and anyone with any information is requested to use the Crime Ref. number: 10-646
