Broadwindsor Girl Guide Rescues Sister From West Bay Harbour

Broadwindsor would really like to give praise to a young Girl Guide who on Saturday, 29th 2020 August rescued her sister after she fell off the slipway at West Bay and into the harbour.

The 2 girls had wandered from the pier, where they were crabbing with their family to fill their bucket with water. On doing so the younger girl slipped and fell into the harbour.  She was unable to touch the bottom and also unable to reach to get up out of the water. Her sister, Eleanor (from 1st Broadwindsor Guides) called for help and proceeded to try and get her sister out of the water. Eleanor said “It was scary because my sister went under a few times but I knew that I had to try and pull her up out of the water or she could drown.”  Thankfully Eleanor was able to pull her younger sister to safety by the time her family arrived to help.

Emma House (Leader 1st Broadwindsor Guides) said ‘ I am incredibly proud of Ellie’s quick thinking, accidents happen and if she had not remained calm it could have been a different story

🙂 Well done Eleanor! You should be very proud! 🙂

1st Broadwindsor Guides – for girls aged 10-14 yrs.

Some Disabilities Are Hidden & Not Immediately Obvious

Hidden disabilities don’t have physical signs and include learning difficulties, mental health as well as mobility, speech, visual or hearing impairments. They can also include asthma, COPD, and other lung conditions as well as chronic illnesses such as renal failure, diabetes, and sleep disorders when those diseases significantly impact day-to-day life.
Living with these conditions can make daily life more demanding for many people. They affect each person in different ways and can be painful, exhausting, and isolating. Without visible evidence of the hidden disability, it is frequently difficult for others to acknowledge the challenges faced and as a consequence, sympathy and understanding can often be in short supply.

There is no qualifying list of hidden disabilities. If you have a hidden disability and feel that you would benefit from wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower product, please do and click the link further down the page. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower does not entitle you to anything other than that you have a hidden disability and that you may need some assistance, help or a little more time. It is NOT a pass to be fast-tracked nor for any other benefit.

The Sunflower Lanyard Scheme® launched at London Gatwick Airport in May 2016 in order to identify passengers with a hidden disability who may need additional help while travelling. Following its success, the scheme was rolled out across all major UK airports over the following two years. By the end of 2018 UK Rail providers had become members of the scheme and trials were in place at NHS trusts and independent GP surgeries and at major UK supermarkets. Cinemas and visitor attractions throughout the UK in launched the scheme in 2019.  Also last year, M&S was the first UK supermarket to roll out the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard in all their UK stores; Sainsbury’s and Argos launched throughout their UK stores; and Tesco launched in all of their stores in the UK and Ireland. Hospitals, insurance companies, shopping centres, sports venues, and arenas all joined across the UK and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower online store opened up to the general public.
So far this year, Nationwide is trialling the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower becoming the first financial institution to join the scheme and Chelsea Football Club have launched the scheme.

Clothes Banks By School Empty & Ready For More

The two big clothes banks located just outside the school gates have just been emptied after being full for over a week.  The P.T.A. did receive lots of messages and thanks to everyone for their patience.
Village resident, Hazel Catton stated that they usually are emptied every two weeks and as she lives around the corner, usually notices if they should fill up before then.  Any queries, please message her through Facebook.
Deposits can be made at any time.  All of the clothes donated raise vital funds to help support our village school.

Thank you for all donations so far – please keep them coming!

The Bishops’ Kitchen – Sept 20

This month you have two Chutney Recipes to help use up this seasons’ apples.  Both these chutneys will be great with cold cuts at Christmas.

SPICY PLUM & APPLE CHUTNEY

1 garlic bulb, thumb-sized piece fresh root ginger,  2 large onions, 1kg Bramley apples, 3 star anise, 1tsp cumin seed, 1 cinnamon stick, 500ml bottle cider vinegar, 1tbsp salt, 1kg plums, 450g golden caster sugar. 4-5 sterilised jars.

Prepare the ingredients. Peel the garlic cloves & cut into slivers. Peel & thinly shred the ginger. Halve & thinly slice the onions, then put them in a large pan with the garlic & ginger. Peel, core & chop the apples, then add to the pan with the spices, vinegar & salt. Bring the pan to the boil over a gentle heat, give everything a good stir, then turn down the heat & cover. Simmer for 30 mins until the apples are cooked & pulpy. Stone & quarter the plums, then add to the cooked apples with the sugar. Stir well & leave to simmer uncovered for 40 mins stirring often until the plums are cooked but still retain some of their shape. Ladle into the sterilised jars, seal & label. This chutney is best kept for a month before eating as the vinegar needs time to mellow.

INDIAN CHUTNEY

450g cooking apples, peeled & chopped, 50g salt, 580 ml malt vinegar, 450g soft brown sugar, 225g sultanas, 110g raisins, 2 cloves garlic (crushed), 1tbsp chopped fresh red chilli or tsp chilli powder, 1tsp mustard powder,  ½ tsp ground ginger, 1tsp curry powder.

Place chopped apple into a large bowl, sprinkle with salt between the layers & cover. Leave to stand in a cool place overnight. Drain thoroughly. Place apples in pan with 140 ml vinegar. Bring to the boil, reduce heat & simmer for 10 minutes. Pour remaining vinegar into another pan with sugar & gently heat until dissolved. Bring to boil & boil for 5 mins. Add to the apple mixture, stir in sultanas & raisins & cook for 10 minutes. Mix garlic, chillies, mustard, ginger & curry powder with  little water .Stir into the apple mixture. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat & simmer for 30 mins or until thick. Pour into warm jars  & seal.

All recipes are from village resident, Richard Childs.
