Happy Summer Solstice!

When Sarah Hunt and Dominic Withington first moved to Broadwindsor in 2021 , they were keen to make a little positive mark on the village.

At the side of North Cottage, the small patch adjacent to the allotment entrance was in need of a touch of TLC….

As Parish land but under the Allotment group. Sarah and Dominic cleared the scrub and planted 400 bulbs for the Spring 2023 season and seeded with poppies and of course the abundant oxeye daisy seed…

As you can see, the poppies are coming into glorious bloom now and the oxide daisies on the other side are looking smashing too.

Hopefully all who pass will take some joy from these beautiful plants and look forward to spring bloooms in 2023 before more poppies 🙂

Thank you Sarah & Dominic!
They do indeed look beautful.

Happy Summer Solstice!

Father’s Day – Sunday, 19th June

Honouring fathers, grandfathers and all things paternal, Father’s Day has been celebrated on the third Sunday in June since 1910.

Both the Stableyard Restaurant & The White Lion are offering a delicious dinner – please call to check availability!

Thank the Americans!

Founded by the daughter of a U.S. Civil War Army veteran in 1910, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Then in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year. The U.K. follows this observation.

A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least 1508 and is usually celebrated on March 19th, recognised as the feast day of Saint Joseph.

In countries, including Spain and Portugal, Father’s Day is observed on 8th August.

Germany marks Father’s Day on Ascension Day in May or June, 40 days after Easter, while Australia and New Zealand commemorate it on the first Sunday in September.

In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on 5th December, the birthday of their late king who was considered the ‘Father of the Nation‘.

Russia continues a tradition from the Soviet Union of celebrating “Man’s Day” on ‘Defender of the Fatherland Day’ on 23rd February, which marks the first mass draft into the Red Army.

In addition to Father’s Day, International Men’s Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19th (on a Saturday this year) in honour of both men and boys.

Enjoy a Happy Father’s Day 🙂

Support For Application By Village Shop For Loan By BGPC

The meeting of Broadwindsor Group Parish Council (‘BGPC’) on 13 June 2022 considered the loan application from BADCE towards the purchase of the shop freehold, and there was overwhelming support for the proposal.

The following is the text of a report issued by BGPC after Monday’s meeting:

At last night’s Meeting BADCE asked the Parish Council to consider helping them to acquire loan finance which would allow them to purchase the freehold of the Old Telephone Exchange Building which has become available at a discounted price and thereby help ensure a more sustainable future for the Community Shop.

The Parish Council has access through the Public Woks Loan Board to finance with much lower interest rates than those offered by high-street lenders. The Parish Council successfully accessed a loan of £20,000 in 2018 to help meet a funding shortfall for the Multi-Use Games Area, which has proved to be an invaluable community asset

The proposed loan would be for £50,000 over a thirty year term and all repayments would be funded by BADCE. There would be no increase in the precept, the Parish Council will not incur any additional costs and will be offered security over the freehold property, which has a value materially higher than the £50,000 loan.

The Parish Council will be considering the proposal at its next meeting on 11 July, and we really want to hear from parishioners as to whether they would support tis. Please do leave comments, send an e mail, call or attend our meeting. We look forward to hearing from you.

As indicated above, the Parish Council wants to receive support from parishioners for its proposed loan to BADCE, so all supporters are please asked to confirm support for the loan, by contacting the Clerk, in writing, or by email on hello@broadwindsorgroup.gov.uk.
NB: Please include your address so the Clerk can confirm that you live in the Parish 🙂

Motor Cycling Club 120th Anniversary Course Through Common Water Lane

The Motor Cycling Club (MCC)’s 120th Anniversary Dick Peachey Three Day Trial, named to honour their former Chairman Dick Peachey who died earlier this year, sees around 100 classic bikes and cars tackle a 530-mile course including on technical off-road trials sections.

It starts in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on Friday, 24th June and go to Exeter and back AND includes Common Water Lane. The first cars are anticipated from 11.40am on Friday, 24th for approximately 3 hours maximum. Residents of Common Water Lane have been informed.

The Motor Cycling Club is one of the oldest in the world. At the turn of the 20th Century, a small handful of automotive pioneers established the Club with one mission in mind. To test themselves and their machinery by trekking along the unmade and unlit roads and hills between London and Edinburgh and back. The long distance Classic reliability trial was born.

The Club remains the only one that caters for such events in modern times, and takes much pride in this fact. Over 120 years of competition to date and their events are still capable of testing drivers and riders along with their machinery. These days, those unsurfaced hills have become synonymous with the Club and it’s trials, whether they’re in the Peaks or the South West.

There will be a whole range of bikes, side cars and 2 wheel drive cars on standard road tyres, from pre-war to homemade and everything inbetween, so if you’d like to watch, there should be something interesting to see passing by!
