“A high-octane spectacle, the likes of which the world has never seen before,” Top Gun: Maverick is “The perfect adrenaline rush”.  After more than thirty years of service as a top naval aviator, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot.  Yet Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past when he returns to TOP GUN to train a group of elite graduates and comes face-to-face with Lt. Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his former wingman, “Goose”.  Bitter rivalries ignite as the pilots prepare for a specialist mission, which will require the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.

The Duke (12)

Directed by Roger Michell and starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. Running time: 96 minutes.

In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London.  It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history.  Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on the condition that the Government invested more in care for the elderly – he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television.  What happened next became the stuff of legend.  Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies.  The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale.

A Few Seats Remaining For Rosemoor Trip This Sunday

There are a few seats remaining for Broadwindsor & District Horticultural Society’s day coach trip to RHS Rosemoor, a public display garden run by the Royal Horticultural Society in north Devon (EX38 8PH).

The first trip since before lockdown, this Sunday, 9th October, the coach will leave promptly at 9am from the Comrades Hall (DT8 3QP), returning from Rosemoor at 4pm.

War Memorial Update

This is the updated final draft – with Seaborough spelt correctly and names added as informed 🙂

Broadwindsor is one of the few villages that does not have a memorial for the hero’s of the First and Second world wars (their names are listed inside St. John the Baptist church) and your feedback is still welcome and encouraged.

It is to be discussed at the next Group Parish Council meeting on Monday, 17th October and your feedback is most welcome before they proceed.

Finds Day – Saturday 15th October

Have you ever found something, maybe from simply walking in fields, gardening or metal detecting?

Finds Day is an exciting FREE special event taking place at Beaminster Museum from 10am on Saturday, 15th October.  An opportunity for you to bring along your archelogical find and have it/them identified and recorded by Dorset Council’s Finds Liaison Officer, Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public. If recorded, these finds have the potential to tell us much about the past, such as how and where people lived and about the types of objects they made and used. The PAS only want to record information about your finds, not retain them, so they will give your finds back once recorded unless they are classed as Treasure.

Archaeologist Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen (pictured) says there is a procedure that the finders need to follow.
“If it falls into the category covered by the Treasure Act then it needs to be reported to the coroner. That needs to happen within fourteen days. Then it goes through a long process of assessment and we find out whether a museum wants it. If they do, it goes to an inquest with the coroner. A specialist report will decide whether it fits the criteria for treasure. Broadly, objects have to be over 300 years old and more than 10% precious metal,” she explained to Alfred’s Keri Jones in an interview when she visited Shaftsbury in March.

“I don’t just record metal objects, I recall pottery, flint, tile, clay pipe and all sorts of things that come off the land. I’m keen to see everything. When people find the treasure, they often bring me the other things that they find on the same field to see if it is associated. It’s something we have to consider with treasure in particular.”

A drop-in event, there’s no need to book an appointment but you may have to queue.

Ukraine Fundraiser – Saturday, 8th October

Following the successful coffee morning in May, donations are asked for your tea/coffee with biscuits at the Comrades Hall on Saturday, 8th October, from 10am to 12 noon 🙂 Here is more from Sally Sarling:

In addition to the coffee and biscuits (no admission price just a donation) we will have a raffle, cake stall, plant stall and asking anyone who would like to join us and have a stall to set out their crafts, cards or similar for sale.  We will be asking for a monetary donation, of your choice for this very good cause.

National Black Dog Day – 1st October

Started in 2012, October 1st is National Black Dog Day! Founded by Colleen Paige, an author and forerunner in the advocacy and promotion of pet care and fair treatment of animals, it’s a day to get the word out and encourage people to adopt black dogs, who often get left behind in shelters just because of the colour of their fur.
Referred to as “Black Dog Syndrome”, this is a phenomenon where black dogs are passed over for adoption in favour of lighter-colored animals 🙁
Among dogs, yellow dogs were considered friendliest, brown dogs second friendliest, and black dogs least friendly. Darker pets were similarly judged less adoptable and black dogs were considered the most aggressive.

The term “black dog” is most commonly used to describe a state of depression, characterised by either poor behaviour or the lack of will to do anything, including things you once loved.

Not to be confused with International Dog Day on August 26th which encourages dog ownership of all breeds – when seeking a new companion, be sure to consider the mutts, mixes, purebreds, and everything in between.

For those who prefer cats… National Black Cat Day is held each year on 27th October.
