Meet Jeremy Noble – Thursday 15th September

Everyone is invited to the W.I.’s meeting on 15th September when they will be delighted to welcome Jeremy Noble (pictured above) for a reading from his novel, Russian Ending at the Comrades Hall.

Our lovely village of Broadwindsor features significantly as a location in the book (even the WI gets a mention!), which is about an investment manager (Edward “Ned” Lumley) who gets involved with a Russian family whose money comes from the diamond industry.  Lies and deceit ensue, but from which side?

Following the reading, Jeremy will be happy to take your questions and sign any copies of the book you bring along.
A Russian Ending is available from bookshops and can be purchased on Amazon HERE.

There will be a small entry fee of £5 for non-members. All profits from the evening will go to a Ukrainian charity.

As you’d expect being hosted by the W.I., delicious refreshments will be available 🙂

Changes & Continuity At Broadwindsor Community Stores

Sadly, Mike Moles, the recently appointed manager at Broadwindsor Community Stores is unable to continue with the position and has tendered his resignation. Once again a new manager would have to be found…

Broadwindsor Community Stores has seen many changes over its almost ten years of trading but it has had one positive constant: Jane Sloman.

If you’re a regular, Jane will most likely greet you by your name, know what you like and if you ask her about anything in the shop, she most likely will have the answer. Talk to anyone who uses the village shop and they not only know Jane but think highly of her.

Sue Williams, 2015

I remember my interview like it was yesterday,’ she said. ‘The shop wasn’t open yet so Sue Williams, the first manager, and I sat on a couple of upside-down crates in the empty shop to do the interview.

And I got the job! Haven’t looked back since!

After ten years of being a valuable shop assistant Jane has now accepted to take on the manager’s role, much to the shop committee’s delight and no doubt the whole community.

Andrew Hookings, Chairman of Broadwindsor Community Stores, said: “Jane has been with us since the shop opened in March 2013. She is very popular with volunteers and customers alike.  The community knows Jane has had a tough time over the last couple of years, and she has thankfully come through. Jane richly deserves this opportunity.”

The shop committee is now looking for a part-time shop assistant to help Jane and work alongside her colleague, Margaret, as well as with the volunteers who together make the Broadwindsor Village Shop team. The part-time shop assistant role will be on a temporary basis whilst Jane settles into her new role with the aim of being a permanent position.
Anyone interested in the position is asked to please email andrewhookings@yahoo.co.uk directly.

Good luck for your future Mike
& Well done Jane 🙂

Stage 7, Tour Of Britain Cycle Race – Saturday, 10th September

UPDATE:

We have many cycle enthusiasts in our parish and many who cycle through. For the first time*, Dorset will be providing a warm welcome to both competitors and spectators later this year at the penultimate Stage Seven of the Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, on Saturday, 10th September.

Stage seven
will take the riders from West Bay to Ferndown via one of the most stunning routes in Tour history. Stage seven will run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle.
The route then heads inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster and loops round into the heart of Ferndown town centre.
For any questions or enquiries about the Tour please email: dorsettour22@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk or visit the website HERE.
* While it may be the modern race’s first visit to Dorset, the county welcomed the Milk Race – a semi-professional forerunner of the Tour of Britain – on multiple occasions during the 1970s and 1980s.

Bernards’ Place Crowdfunder Launched Today

A Crowdfunder campaign is being launched in Broadwindsor at noon today, Tuesday 23rd August to raise the £20,000 needed to transform the village green at Bernards’ Place.

The project will provide community open space, challenging and inclusive play equipment and physical exercise for all, right in the heart of the village.

The plan has almost three years in the making but we’re determined to make it happen,’ said Sheila Hawkins, who worked with the late David Leader to put the project together for the Comrades Hall, which owns the land.

It will be a fitting tribute to David, who died suddenly earlier this year. He made such a difference to community and sporting life in the village and brought everyone together.’

The village green scheme forms part of a successful bid to The National Lottery Community Fund. That secured grant funding of £84,000 in total, (including funding, from Low Carbon Dorset) and £45,000 has been allocated to the village green upgrade.  The remainder has funded improvements to make Comrades Hall more environmentally friendly, with the installation of 36 solar panels and an air source heat pump central heating system, which replaced the old oil-fired one, plus improved insulation.

Planning permission has been granted for exciting new play equipment for the upper section of the green (Read more HERE.).  At the lower end, the existing old swings will be removed and a new oak-framed shelter is being installed. The idea is to make the most of the opened-up space for community events and outdoor exercise.

Since the project was first mooted two years ago, costs have risen by around £20,000.

Margery Hookings, who is leading the Crowdfunder appeal on behalf of Comrades Hall Management Committee, said: ‘Fundraising events are planned but we really hope people and local businesses will support our appeal to meet the shortfall.

During the pandemic, when we could only go out to exercise, our village green became even more important to us as a community.

Bernards’ Place is something we all treasure. By reconfiguring the space, adding new, inclusive and challenging play and activity equipment, introducing exercise sessions and equipment for all ages, as well as staging community events, there will be something for all of us to enjoy, bringing together people of all ages and abilities, and helping to improve health and well-being.

It will provide an enhanced facility to keep our community physically active and encourage others, who don’t necessarily see themselves as ‘sporty’, to join in.

Local artist Donna Heys has again kindly created a “thermometer” to chart the appeal’s progress. As donations are received, the illustration will be coloured in, in stages, until we reach our target.

Sport England has pledged £8,000 towards the appeal once the £5,000 mark has been reached. Payment of the grant relies on there being at least 100 unique supporters and reaching the £20,000 target.

The village has a strong track record of raising money through Crowdfunder. In 2020, Broadwindsor Cricket Club raised £35,785 to buy its ground, with 191 supporters in 27 days. Then, in February this year, campaigners raised £34,760, with 337 supporters in 28 days, to reopen The White Lion as a community pub.

Margery said: ‘We appreciate that money is tight and this new appeal might be a tall order after the successful campaign to save The White Lion.

However, through crowdfunding we have an opportunity to unlock potential extra funding, so any donation, big or small, will help the Comrades Hall enormously to replenish diminishing resources.

It is important to the village to get this project done. We all know, particularly after the pandemic, how vital outside space is to everyone’s health and well-being. This will make such a difference to young and old and all those in between, for generations to come.

Local businesses are also invited to post their events directly, providing they have paid their £15 registration fee.  Non-registered businesses are invited to register, else their post will be removed.
