Village Resident Presents Monthly Astronomy on Zoom

At 3pm on Wednesday, 14th April, many will be back in their workplace but there will be many others still at home.  For those not at work, at 3pm, village resident, Peter Davies will be launching the first of his Zoom presentations: ‘ An Introduction to the basic principles of our Earth, Sun and planets‘.

Presentations will occur each month and progress through all aspects of time, space, distance and gravity. Ideal for beginners who want to know more than just the names of stars and constellations.  The first session will take a look at the basics of how our solar system works in general starting with magnetic forces. The project is being funded by Magna.org.uk and supported by Broadwindsor.org.  It will continue on a monthly basis for as long as there is interest.

Peter’s interest in astronomy began over 20 years ago after studying & working in electronics.  “I’d like people to understand what they see when they look at an object in the night sky rather than looking at a pinpoint of light. The sessions really are for beginners and I’d advise to keep notes for reference for future sessions.”  The sessions are 90 minutes each and Peter does recommend having a notepad and pen to take any notes.  There will be a ten minute break during the session for refreshments.  There will also be the opportunity to ask questions and/or discussion.

To listen/participate – you must first email: Lori.Lee@magna.org.uk to register your interest for Data Protection reasons.

Rare Archives Sold at Lawrences’ Auctioneers

At Lawrences’ auctioneers in Crewkerne, great attention focused upon an archive of pictures, books and manuscripts from the family of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning. Prices were strong throughout. Robert Browning’s `The Greek Christian Poets and the English Poets` took £2375, more than ten times expectations; a pair of portrait miniatures ascribed to Charles Robertson, c.1790, made £1750 and an album of 120 family portrait photographs, apparently captioned by Robert Browning himself, made £6750.
An informal pencil sketch of Elizabeth Barrett Browning from 1845, ascribed to Alfred Price Moulton-Barrett (1820-1904), belied its simple lines by making the astounding price of £5750. The selection, and indeed the sale, was led by a collection of manuscript poems by Elizabeth and included drafts of `The Enchantress`, `The Young Thucydides` and other works.
Against hopes of £7000, this lot made £32500 and the collection added over £60000 to the £182,000 sale total.

Check when Lawrences’ next auctions are taking place HERE.
(Dates may be subject to change due to Government law and restrictions.)
