Local Theft

Dorset Police are appealing for assistance on Reports of three thefts, two of them very close to home.
1. Theft of Quad Bike: Between 00.01 hrs on Tuesday 8th Sept 2020 and 14.18 hrs on Saturday 12th Sept 2020 a green coloured Kawasaki Kodiak Quad Bike was stolen from a farm in Drimpton, Beaminster.
Occurrence 55200137469 refers.
2. Theft from shed: Between 16.00 hrs on Thursday 10th Sept 2020 and 17.00 hrs on Friday 11th Sept 2020 miscellaneous building materials were stolen from a shed at a farm in Broadwindsor, Beaminster.
Items stolen included roofing sheets, heavy duty guttering and metal work.
Occurrence 55200137294 refers.
3. Theft of Bicycle: Sometime between 19.30 hrs on Friday 11th Sept 2020 and 10.00 hrs on Saturday 12th Sept 2020 a specialized Hybrid Bicycle was stolen from the campsite at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park, Burton Bradstock, Bridport.

BT Basic

BT vans are always driving around our village.  We have many elderly residents in our village too who could greatly benefit from the BT Basic package:

BT Basic is a low-cost telephone service for people on specific means-tested benefits. It gives you peace of mind by helping you to budget.  It is not advertised by BT and you have to contact them to receive an application form which you send in with your evidence that you meet their requirements.

You must be getting one of the following means-tested benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pensions Credit (Guaranteed Credit)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (Income related)
  • Universal Credit (and are on zero earnings)

Costs are significantly cheaper:

The monthly line rental only costs £5.16 (including VAT) a month. As well as getting free weekend calls (up to sixty minutes duration) to 0845 and 0870 numbers, it comes with a call allowance of £1.50 and a £10 monthly price cap.

If you would like to add Broadband to a BT Basic line, the total cost of this is £10.07.

With the price cap, it means no matter how many calls you make the most you’ll pay each month is £15.16 or £20.07 with broadband, if you keep with the eligible calls included within the price cap. If you make fewer calls it will be less. This applies to UK numbers starting with 01, 02, 03 and 08 as well as UK mobile numbers starting with 07 – so UK mobiles are included too!

You can choose to have either monthly or quarterly bills.

If you’re the named account holder, you can get a BT Basic application form by calling 0800 800 864 (8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday).

Learn Zoom for Meetings at 2pm on September 14th

The Plunkett Foundation gave a huge amount of encouragement and advice to get our community shop, Broadwindsor Community Stores up and running. Tomorrow (Monday 14th September) they are holding a free webinar at 2pm to guide you through the process of holding your AMM/AGM online using Zoom.

The webinar is aimed at community businesses who may have been planning to hold their meetings face-to-face, but with new government guidelines restricting group sizes, are having to make the move to online.  Plunkett’s Community Business Manager, Alison Macklin, will provide a step-by-step guide to basic online meeting protocols, including:

  • Setting up and advertising the AGM/AMM
  • Registration
  • Basic settings on Zoom
  • Sharing screens
  • Managing AGM entry (waiting room)
  • Managing Q & A
  • Voting online

Respond to Government’s Covid-19 & Flu-jab Consultation By September 18th

After September 18th, our Government are going to announce that they consulted the public and because there were no objections, we all want and consent to the rollout of unlicensed vaccines, and that we are happy for non-medical staff to administer them and happy to accept we will not have the ability to ask for compensation if we face damage to our health. This particular request is not being seen by many and has not been promoted widely enough.

Our Government want your views on proposed changes to the Human Medicine Regulations to help with the safe and efficient distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine and expanded flu vaccine programme in the UK, along with treatments for COVID-19 and any other diseases that become pandemic. The consultation covers:

  • authorising temporary supply of an unlicensed product
  • civil liability and immunity
  • expanding the workforce eligible to administer vaccinations
  • promoting vaccines
  • making provisions for wholesale dealing of vaccines

These changes will support the effective rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine and the upscaling of influenza (flu) vaccination programme in the UK. It is important to emphasise, however, that although some of the measures specifically reference COVID-19 and flu vaccines, the proposed changes will also facilitate the efficient mass distribution of treatments for COVID-19, or for any other disease that poses a serious risk to public health.

At the time of publication of their document, it is not clear what the earliest date is that it might be possible to deploy a COVID-19 vaccine in the UK. In the circumstances, the UK government is moving as quickly as possible to put in place a package of legislative measures that would support the delivery of a safe and effective vaccine, for whenever the measures are needed.

However, having to move quickly means having less time than they would like to consult on these proposals – indeed, they are asking for comments by the end of Friday 18 September 2020.
Even after the consultation has finished and amendments have been made, the UK government will remain open to the possibility of making further changes – very rapidly, if need be.
Therefore, please do not refrain from commenting simply because the official period for receiving comments is at an end. If you have something that you want to say about these proposals, the UK government wants to hear it.

Cllr_SC*Councillor Simon Christopher gave up his role as Chair of the Area Planning Committee at the end of last month to concentrate on problems locally arising from the A35. He will also no longer sit as a member of the Dorset Council Audit and Governance Committee, although he still remains a Dorset Councillor.
A separate post on Cllr. Simon Christopher, with reference to his interview with Trevor Bevins at the Dorset Echo on 31st August 2020 and his interaction with Broadwindsor residents will be published sometime next week.

Rare Archives Sold at Lawrences’ Auctioneers

At Lawrences’ auctioneers in Crewkerne, great attention focused upon an archive of pictures, books and manuscripts from the family of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning. Prices were strong throughout. Robert Browning’s `The Greek Christian Poets and the English Poets` took £2375, more than ten times expectations; a pair of portrait miniatures ascribed to Charles Robertson, c.1790, made £1750 and an album of 120 family portrait photographs, apparently captioned by Robert Browning himself, made £6750.
An informal pencil sketch of Elizabeth Barrett Browning from 1845, ascribed to Alfred Price Moulton-Barrett (1820-1904), belied its simple lines by making the astounding price of £5750. The selection, and indeed the sale, was led by a collection of manuscript poems by Elizabeth and included drafts of `The Enchantress`, `The Young Thucydides` and other works.
Against hopes of £7000, this lot made £32500 and the collection added over £60000 to the £182,000 sale total.

Village Meetings Cancelled

Due to the new restrictions of social distancing in effect from Monday, 14th September 2020, two village meetings have been cancelled.  Up until the weekend, gatherings of 30 people are permitted.  This reduces drastically to only six people from Monday.

Broadwindsor Community StoresBroadwindsor Community Stores was due to have their Annual General Meeting on Thursday, September 24th at the Comrades Hall. The Shop’s Committee will be in touch with members in due course about the business matters that were due to have been covered at this Meeting.  Notices will appear on the noticeboard outside the shop.

Broadwindsor Fun GroupBroadwindsor’s Fun Group was due to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting on Thursday, October 1st, also at the Comrades Hall – this too has been cancelled.  Members have been contacted.  However, if anyone not yet a member has creative ideas or suggestions and would like to be involved for the proposed Fun Day next year (Saturday 12th June 2021) – you are invited to contact bwfunday20@gmail.com.

Dorset Hedgehog Survey

There were sightings of a Hedgehog at the top of Fullers last week. Have you seen one?

The Dorset Wildlife Trust report that Hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30% in just over 10 years. Please help them understand more about Dorset’s hedgehogs by completing their two minute survey. Click HERE.
