Memories Of The White Lion

Village resident Annie Collins shared a memory today on social media of ex Landlord and Landlady of The White Lion in Broadwindsor, Dick and Pam Corbett. Another village resident, then barmaid Rita Haggett is in the background.

The photograph shows Annie celebrating winning the ladies Rosebowl Singles Table Skittles competition. Annie cannot recall the year (in the 1980’s) as she won that compeitition ten times in all!

You are invited to send your Broadwindsor pub photographs, memories and stories in via Messenger on Facebook HERE or email to: info@broadwindsor.org.  They will be collated and published later in the year. 🙂

It prompts comments from those who remember when Broadwindsor had three pubs: The George. The Cross Keys. The White Lion.  Now we are struggling to hang onto and reopen the last remaining pub in the village – The White Lion.
You can read the latest on the White Lion HERE.

Look out for Annie on Broadwindsor’s Fun Day when she’ll be roaming the area capturing the fun of the day 🙂

2021’s winner

Homeward Bound by Haydn Canter

Haydn Canter used to paint with his left hand and didn’t think he would ever paint again following his stroke. He was inspired by a local beauty spot in a park where he used to go to enjoy a snack with his dog. The rest comes from his love of winter.

You can purchase a pack of 10 of Haydn’s cards from the Stroke Association’s Christmas shop for £4.49 HERE.

Post To Recycle Rubber Bands

Acknowledged as biodegradeable, Royal Mail states the natural rubber content in a rubber band means that they will start to biodegrade in an outdoor environment within a year and this, we are told helps to minimise their impact on the environment. However, Rubber bands take up to 50 years to fully biodegrade and can be incredibly harmful to the environment. If burned they release carcinogenic pollution into the atmosphere.

Royal Mail, and the Trade Unions CWU and Unite/CMA recognise that discarded elastic bands that litter the ground, present a public nuisance, an eyesore and a threat to wildlife and pets, as well as representing a needless expense. Every year, Royal Mail uses around 338 tonnes of elastic bands to keep bundles of mail together.

You can now post any rubber bands you see or find directly into any post box and they will be recycled by the Royal Mail.

Every little helps…

Peak Of The Perseid Meteor Shower

The New Moon on Sunday, 8th guarantees a dark sky in which to view shooting stars – providing there are no clouds.  These are the Perseids and they began last month, becoming increasingly bright each night until their peak on 11th/12th/13th August.

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the brightest showers in the celestial calendar, with up to 100 shooting starts an hour to be seen if you’re in the Northern hemisphere. You should be able to see the Perseid meteor shower at around 12am (midnight) UK time to 5.30am. Look North East

Love is LoveIn Ancient Greek star lore, Perseus (slayer of the Gorgon Medusa) was the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Danaë. It is said that the Perseid shower commemorates the time when Zeus visited Danaë, the mother of Perseus, in a shower of gold., in a shower of gold 🙂
The chief characters in the Perseus legend, Perseus, Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and the sea monster (Cetus), all figure in the night sky as constellations.
The Perseid meteor shower gets its name as it appears to come out of the constellation Perseus.
