The Chinese New Year always occurs on the night of the New Moon, when skies are at their darkest. Though celebrations often start the weekend before and continue for weeks after, only the first seven days, Jan. 31st to Feb. 6th, are considered public holidays.

The third day of Lunar New Year is known as Chi Kou Ri, or “Day of the Red Mouth.” Falling on Thursday, Feb. 3rd this year, it’s believed to be a time when arguments are more likely, so people tend to avoid social interactions and stay home or visit temples instead.

The Lantern Festival, a Chinese tradition celebrated on the first Full Moon of the year, signifying the end of the New Year season and is marked by the flying of paper lanterns and eating of turnip cakes and tangyuan, a Chinese dessert of sweet rice-ball dumplings. It occurs on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese calendar — this year, it lands on Feb. 15th.

“In Chinese culture, the tiger is the symbol of bravery, wisdom and strength. But interestingly, the tiger is not mentioned in the Bible, while the lion, a Western astrological sign, is absent from the Chinese zodiac,” Qin said. “Different places and peoples have different cultures. This is only natural, but such differences should not prevent us from understanding, respecting and appreciating each other’s history, culture and tradition.” 🙂

On January 21st 2023, the Year of the Water Rabbit begins.

A Piper Welcomes In 2022

Villagers who were out to welcome the New Year were treated to a piper playing Auld Lang Syne as it turned midnight into 2022 🙂

The piper, who was with a private function being held in the Comrades Hall, played outside the hall and then led the party and those from the Comrades Arms down to the square to meet with other villagers who had kept the tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne and making a circle in the square.

When the piper had stopped, we were then led to Bennett Jones, aged only 10 years, who played his rendition of Auld Lang Syne on his trumpet.  The piper played another tune and a few fireworks were let off from Bernards’ Place.

The following 2 and a half minute video is not professional but hopefully captures the spirit and gives memories to those who were there:

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

We all sing it when the bells chime midnight but what does Auld Lang Syne mean? It literally translates as Old Long Since making reference to the “olden days”, particularly with friends.

Written as a poem by Rabbie (Robert) Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) in 1788, it was put to the music of an even older folk tune.  The Scottish Bard used the Scottish dialect however here are the lyrics in an English, singable form:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the hills,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak’ a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Wishing Everybody A Happy New Year!

Stay Safe!

Back Lane Closed – Traffic Diversion

Wessex Water have commenced roadworks this morning in Back Lane with apparently no notice to residents.  This has caused significant disruption and there is someone in place now diverting traffic.

There was an urgent road closure in effect in Main Street, Hursey (more HERE) but nothing about Back Lane this morning.  Traffic, including buses and lorries travelled the wrong way down High Street towards the Comrades Hall only to meet traffic coming up the opposite way.  This too may be urgent but no notification causes accidents.  The police have been notified.

Please take care when driving through the village!

Wessex Water tweeted at approx. 1pm stating: “…sorry for the inconvenience caused. The team involved has advised us that the work has now been completed and traffic should soon return to normal. They’ll look into what went wrong on this occasion to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Thanks.
