2021’s winner

Homeward Bound by Haydn Canter

Haydn Canter used to paint with his left hand and didn’t think he would ever paint again following his stroke. He was inspired by a local beauty spot in a park where he used to go to enjoy a snack with his dog. The rest comes from his love of winter.

You can purchase a pack of 10 of Haydn’s cards from the Stroke Association’s Christmas shop for £4.49 HERE.

Post To Recycle Rubber Bands

Acknowledged as biodegradeable, Royal Mail states the natural rubber content in a rubber band means that they will start to biodegrade in an outdoor environment within a year and this, we are told helps to minimise their impact on the environment. However, Rubber bands take up to 50 years to fully biodegrade and can be incredibly harmful to the environment. If burned they release carcinogenic pollution into the atmosphere.

Royal Mail, and the Trade Unions CWU and Unite/CMA recognise that discarded elastic bands that litter the ground, present a public nuisance, an eyesore and a threat to wildlife and pets, as well as representing a needless expense. Every year, Royal Mail uses around 338 tonnes of elastic bands to keep bundles of mail together.

You can now post any rubber bands you see or find directly into any post box and they will be recycled by the Royal Mail.

Every little helps…

Peak Of The Perseid Meteor Shower

The New Moon on Sunday, 8th guarantees a dark sky in which to view shooting stars – providing there are no clouds.  These are the Perseids and they began last month, becoming increasingly bright each night until their peak on 11th/12th/13th August.

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the brightest showers in the celestial calendar, with up to 100 shooting starts an hour to be seen if you’re in the Northern hemisphere. You should be able to see the Perseid meteor shower at around 12am (midnight) UK time to 5.30am. Look North East

Love is LoveIn Ancient Greek star lore, Perseus (slayer of the Gorgon Medusa) was the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Danaë. It is said that the Perseid shower commemorates the time when Zeus visited Danaë, the mother of Perseus, in a shower of gold., in a shower of gold 🙂
The chief characters in the Perseus legend, Perseus, Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and the sea monster (Cetus), all figure in the night sky as constellations.
The Perseid meteor shower gets its name as it appears to come out of the constellation Perseus.

Dorset Homechoice – Closed To New Applications

Without any notice from Dorset Council or our Dorset Councillor, Simon Christopher, Dorset Council’s housing register, Dorset Homechoice, is now closed to new applications. If registered, you can still bid for properties and view your feedback by logging into your account as normal.

Both Dorset Council and BCP Council are changing how properties are allocated and how people can apply for housing. From October 1st 2021, they will be introducing a new Dorset Council Home Choice website and allocations policy. This means there will be some changes to how applicants apply for social housing and some of the assessment criteria.

To view and download the Draft of their new Housing Allocations Policy 2021 – 2026 – Click HERE.

Dates of note:

  • 26th July 2021 – Existing applicants who are registered with Dorset Council were invited to apply to join the new housing list.
  • 23rd September 2021 – Last advert date for properties in West Dorset (& Weymouth & Portland, East Dorset, North Dorset or Purbeck).
  • 1st October 2021 – New applicants will be able to apply to join the new Dorset Council housing list.

Former District Councillor & Local Parish Councillor, Jacqui Sewell has already submitted an email to a Dorset Housing Officer with many questions including what will happen if a CLT tenancy comes up before then & there is no-one on the housing register who qualifies, but the CLT are aware of an individual or a family that are not yet on the register but do qualify to apply for a CLT property?  Additionally, as there is a list of 21 disabilities as per RPWD Act 2016 , it is hoped that Dorset Council consider every applicant’s needs and capabilities.

If you have concerns, please contact our current Dorset Councillor – Simon Christopher:

Marshals Sought For Coast To Coast Cycle Challenge

On Sunday 5th September 2021 the 10th annual Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge will be held, starting at 11.00 am in Watchet and ending in West Bay.
Last year this event was cancelled due to COVID – 19 but in 2019, 571 supporters took part in this event to help raise funds to keep Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance flying. In doing so they collaboratively rode just over 30,200 miles and raised more than £54,000 – that’s enough to fund approximately 18 missions by the air ambulance.

Already sold out, the number of cyclists is limited  to 600, with the option of taking part in two different routes and distances:

  • 55 miles – commencing at Washford Cross Park and Ride (Watchet) and finishing at Station Yard Car Park in West Bay.
  • 11 miles – commencing at Royal Oak Pub (Drimpton) and also finishing in West Bay.

It is designed to be a challenge and not a race, there is no pressure on those who are amateur or occasional cyclists; it attracts cyclists of all ages and abilities. Pitstops situated at various locations along the route, will once again provide a well-earned rest and refreshments for the cyclists who take part.  Marshals are required at various points.

Can you help?

If you would be willing to help marshal this event and help keep everyone safe, they would love to hear from you.
Please email: fundraising@dsairambulance.org.uk

This event may cause some slight disruption and organisers would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. They have assured that they will follow COVID government guidelines in place at the time of the event.

With the support of West Somerset and Dorset Council, Avon and Somerset and Dorset Police, they pride themselves on offering an event which is registered and insured with British Cycling.

Read more about the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge – Click HERE.

Good luck to all taking part.
