Compost Corner Memories At The White Lion

Before the White Lion was refurbished… the far left corner used to be known as ‘Compost Corner’ and this was where the regular, local customers would congregate on bar stools and stand.

Three of those regular customers, (from left to right) John Eggleton, Tony Hawkins and Chris Sewell have been drawn by local student, Sasha Slater and their portraits now adorn the wall in what was known as ‘Compost Corner‘.
On April 29th, the opening night of the White Lion as a Community pub, Sasha couldn’t help notice the large blank wall in the corner… she enthusiastically approached Chairman Rick Dyke on that same evening with her idea.  With their portraits now on the wall, John, Tony & Chris were exceptionally pleased to be each given the original drawing by Sasha.

20 year old Sasha is currently in her 2nd year at Exeter University studying Biochemistry. Art however, and in particular portrait art has been Sasha‘s hobby since she was four years old. Self taught, she has lifelong practice and experience! Sasha does most of her drawings from a photograph – be it a human or a pet – and is happy to take commissions from people 🙂

Please contact Sasha directly & view more of marvellous art on Instagram HERE.

Meanwhile… with Compost Corner no more, the afore mentioned gentlemen now sit at the round table!

Excellent work Sasha!

Staff Family Give Their Notice To The White Lion

The White Lion opened as Broadwindsor’s Community pub on 29th April 2022. Regrettably, the management team of Kate Staff with her two daughters, Chloe & Louise have given three months notice to Broadwindsor Community Pub Ltd. led by Chairman Rick Dyke.

In their second issue of ‘The White Lion Roars‘ newsletter Rick delivers the “Sad News To Share” stating that the Staff family will be leaving in mid-February 2023, Rick wished them well for their future and added that they are now looking for a new team to manage the pub and, of course, states he will keep us updated.

Coming back to the present day…. please support the pub this evening (Sunday 20th) as they are holding another one of their popular Quiz nights.  Starting at 6pm. Teams a maximum of 4 people. £3 per person. Cash only requested.

English FlagMonday is England‘s first match in the World Cup v. Iran and the pub will open at 12 noon for the live match which will be shown on television at 1pm.

Open at Christmas and a disco for New Year’s Eve (a.k.a. Hogmanay), they are serving refreshments after the Christmas carols in Bernards’ Place at 4pm on Saturday, 17th December and welcoming back The Silver Lining Band on Friday, 23rd December.

Good luck to one and all!

Farmers’ Breakfasts At The White Lion

Wife of the Chairman of Broadwindsor’s Community Pub, Sara Dyke has issued the following news:

The beginning of meteorological autumn on 1st September also saw the third, very successful Farmers’ Breakfast in the comfortable environment of the White Lion community pub.

28 farmers and family members met at 10am and enjoyed a delicious full English breakfast cooked beautifully by Kate and her family with locally produced ingredients. Izzy Masey, Michelle Hughes and I were the waitresses and heard many murmurs of approval and compliments on the quality of the food. There were lots of empty plates to return to the kitchen which is always a good sign!

The aim of the group
with breakfast is not only to feed our hardworking local farmers, wives and farm workers, important as that is, but also to facilitate regular meetings where networking can take place, advice and support can be shared and also to provide an opportunity for education and innovation.

This month saw the first outside speaker attend, kindly organised by Andrew Frampton. The South West representative from Holland Tractors attended and talked about the new generation tractors which can be powered from methane from slurry lagoons.
He also went through tractor development over the last 20 years and other new technologies including driverless automated tractors which are entering the market.

The breakfasts are the first Thursday of each month and if you’d like to attend (this is limited to the farming community) please let Andrew Frampton know by the Tuesday of that week.
Andrew’s email is: farmerframpo@gmail.com.

Cleaners Needed At The White Lion

We’re all impressed with how Kate, Chloe and Louise are running the White Lion 🙂

At the very first meeting in the Hall, it was stated that volunteers would be required – now is your opportunity to help…

They need as many as possible to create a fortnightly rota. Six people have signed up so far at the time of publishing.

The job entails general cleaning as required:

  • Bar & Hall floors
  • Ladies & Gents toilets

It takes two people two hours. Helpers are needed:

  • Tuesday – Friday, before 6pm
  • Saturday & Sunday, before 11am

If you feel that you can help – please leave your details with Lynne or John Staff – 01308 868584.

Meet Stewart Cochrane – Plasterer

Stewart is new to Broadwindsor, looking to relocate from Poole to be with his partner.

Stewart started in the trade when he left school 31 years ago, and has 27 years of plastering experience.

STC Plastering is a proud member of both Check A Trade, and the Buy With Confidence scheme which is run by Trading Standards. He also has a full CRB clearance.

I am happy to come out and give free estimates, and will always advise customers on what their options are and will always try to help them to save money where possible. I always give very clear cut estimates, and there are never any hidden extras.

  • I cover all aspects of plastering; from skimming, to overboarding, dry-lining, coving, rendering and floor screeding.
  • I work on large projects such as refurbishments and extensions; and smaller projects too…..no job is too small!
  • I will always try and give customers a fair price for their work, which is always carried out to my highest standard.
  • I pride myself on always being punctual, reliable, and tidy…and my feedback shows my customers agree!”

You can contact Stewart on:

As the photograph tells you, Stewart has already visited (and is impressed with) our community funded pub – the White Lion 🙂

Welcome to the village Stewart & Good Luck for your future!

White Lion Community Pub Update – May 22

A message from Chairman, Rick Dyke:

The White Lion reopened its doors nearly 3 weeks ago and it is difficult to imagine how it could have been more successful without offering food. We have already expressed our appreciation of the contributions from many that enabled us to get to this point but it is also important to acknowledge the support from the community since we reopened.
Not all pubs in the area are able to open 6 days a week and receive enough custom for that to be viable. Our aim is to keep it that way and with this in mind will be arranging regular events in the future which we hope will not only maintain current levels of support but hopefully attract new custom too. Watch this space.

However, it has not all been plain sailing and with the benefit of hindsight, some things would have been done differently. Without wishing to make any excuses and for reasons which need no further explanation, responsibilities on the Management Committee changed dramatically in March and with those changes came some necessary decisions as to where our priorities lay.
Consequently, some aspects were given a lower priority, for example membership certificates. We received over 200 requests for membership which is a testament to the support there is within the community. However, it is also a significant undertaking in both preparing and issuing the certificates. You should have received an update sooner but we can advise that the production of those certificates will be completed within the next few days and then the process of issuing the 200+ individual emails with the certificate as an attachment will start. We expect all certificates to have been issued before the end of the month and will provide an update to that effect.

Another aspect that could have been handled better was the offer of skilled help from various tradespeople within the community. Ultimately, there were more offers of assistance than were needed but this should have been communicated. If you offered your support but did not hear further, hopefully you can accept our sincere apologies.

To finish on a positive note, work is progressing well in getting our kitchen ready. We are not ready to give precise details as there are still some aspects that are out of our control but we hope that we will be ready to add to the Fun Group‘s food offering over the Jubilee weekend. An announcement will follow once details have been finalised. You may also be pleased to know that in addition to our food service, coffee will be available too!
