Beccas Fabric Larder Relocating From Redlands Yard

The Fabric Larder, originally Beccas Quilt Emporium started in 1999. Becca was hoping to celebrate 21 years with a Walk About exhibition in September. This will have to wait. Here is what Becca had to say:

A letter from Becca:

“The Craft Centre [Redlands Yard] notified us all that they are making changes. This includes major development of the centre, and due to their changes they have asked me to give up StudiOne which many of you have enjoyed mine & other craft classes.
I was so looking forward to getting back to teaching in September and making exciting plans to celebrate 21 years of business.
As you know the teaching is a huge part of The Fabric Larder and I am afraid one doesn’t survive with out the other. With all the changes & disruption to come on the site and with out teaching space, running solely a shop isn’t viable so I am looking to relocate!!
I am not in a hurry to relocate but will only be open at the centre [Redlands Yard] until 25th August.
I have viewed a few places but also with the virus still lurking & economic hardship to many I have decided not to rush anything.

Beccas's Fabric Larder

In the mean time. . .

I have a trusty van called Florry. She is currently a van with a bed & cooker, but how about I change that around to shelves & fabric! I will mail you about that later. OR, if you would like to express interest on me visiting your group with a mobile shop in your area please email me HERE.

Classes:

I am sussing out town & village locations for pop up classes & patchwork surgeries! Help with on going projects will be at hand! Keep signed up to the news letter to wait for more information & dates.

OPEN HOURS UNTIL 25th AUGUST.  (L A S T  D A Y in Broadwindsor)

Tuesdays – Friday 10:30-4pm
Saturdays 10:30-3pm

CAFE OPEN.
I have a small 1/2 price Fabric Sale & bargain baskets. Stock up with your wadding / calico/ plains / essentials”

National Allotments Week 2020 10th – 16th August

With lovely sunshine forecast, the theme for 2020’s National Allotments Week is Growing Food for Health and Well-being, a reflection of the many benefits of growing, cooking and eating your own fruit and vegetables.

National Allotments Week started in 2002 as a way of raising awareness of allotments and the role they play in helping people to live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships and bolster communities. The campaign week is still thriving 18 years later and interest in growing your own fruit and vegetables has never been stronger since the WW2 Grow for Victory campaign.
They ran a competition last month asking for ‘My Allotment Story‘ from entrants in the form of videos and storyboards, the winner will be announced on August 10th.

Happy 150th Anniversary to the British Red Cross

Inspired by Swiss businessman, Henry Dunant and originally called the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War in 1870, it would be renamed the British Red Cross in 1905 becoming part of an international movement of humanitarian organisations offering aid in disasters and health crises.

Granted its first Royal Charter in 1908 by HM King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra then became its president. Our Queen has been a patron of the organisation for 65 years and Prince Charles has been president of the Red Cross since 2003.

All Red Cross programs and activities are guided by their 7 Fundamental Principles:

  1. Humanity
  2. Impartiality
  3. Neutrality
  4. Independence
  5. Voluntary Service
  6. Unity
  7. Universality

The British Red Cross refuse to ignore people in crisis. They help people cope with disasters, conflicts and personal crises.

Update from Broadwindsor Fun Group

Broadwindsor Fun Day 2021 will be Saturday, June 12th.

Dear fellow Broadwindsor residents and friends,

I write in my role as the Chair of the Broadwindsor Fun Group and hope that this update finds you safe and well.

At the time of putting this piece together the virus is still ever present and the ease of restrictions has been halted with regional lockdowns being put in place. Despite this the Broadwindsor Fun Group have started to look forward to happier times in effort to plan events. The toll on fundraising towards the Fun day to be held on 12th June 2021 has been heavy. I am grateful for the work carried out by committee members to reduce any losses regarding the cancellation of these.

On the positive side we are already negotiating with entertainers to appear at the Fun day in 2021. You may have seen a request for ideas for a theme. Some really good ones have been put forward including something around the Olympics and the European football and a more generic idea of  ‘Your Hero’.
More ideas are very welcome (please submit your ideas to:  bwfunday20@gmail.com).

Whilst we do feel able to start planning for the Fun day next year, we have had to make the difficult decision to not hold a fireworks event this year. The main reasons for this revolve around the virus and fears that even if the situation eased, many may not attend. I have looked at this matter carefully and would seek to inform you that I do not believe that the running of a fireworks evening is viable. Traditionally this event is a loss maker but nevertheless held for the community to enjoy. Should it be held this year, it is projected that we would make a loss of circ. £450. That is assuming that people would attend and still put money in the buckets etc. I have considered approaches to local companies for sponsorship but decided against this as they are most likely struggling to restart after the lockdown and I feel it would be wrong to ask for financial backing. This is not to say that approaches will not be made at a later date as we do need sponsorship for the Fun day itself!

This all said, we do hope to be in a position to run fundraising events such as a Christmas Fayre and Big Breakfast so that the Fun Day 2021 can go ahead bigger and better than ever.

Anyone seeking to hold any such events are asked to communicate with the Fun group so that we can avoid duplication etc. and support each other.

Regards,

Adrian Gray

Lammas on 1st & Full Moon on 3rd

Lammas is celebrated on August 1st and is the first of the three harvest festivals (the Autumnal Equinox and Samhain being the others). The first fruits of summer are enjoyed. There are many festivals and ceremonies but throughout, there is a custom of climbing hills and mountains – we have Lewesdon hill our our doorstep 🙂

August’s Full Moon is on Monday, 3rd and is known as the Sturgeon Moon.  So called because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain in North America were most readily caught during this part of summer. It is also referred to as Full Green Corn Moon, signalling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest, Grain Moon, Fruit Moon, Barley Moon. Wheat Cut Moon, and Blueberry Moon.*

The word “sturgeon” means “the stirrer”, which is what this giant freshwater fish does when it is looking for food; it stirs up the mud and silt on river and lake bottoms.  The sturgeon is sometimes called a “living fossil,” as it belongs to a family of fish that has existed for more than 135 million years.
SturgeonIn ancient times, it was common to track the changing seasons by following the lunar month rather than the solar year, which the 12 months in our modern Gregorian calendar are based on.

*For millennia, people across Europe, as well as the Native American tribes, named the months after features they associated with the Northern Hemisphere seasons, and many of these names are very similar or identical.
