Full Moon – Friday, 19th November

The November Full Moon, known as the Beaver Moon, will also be accompanied by a partial lunar eclipse that will be visible from the United States, Canada and Mexico (essentially all of North and South America), as well as Australia and parts of Europe and Asia. It will last six hours and peak at 09.02am (GMT). Therefore the Moon will look it’s fullest on Thursday evening.

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of North America. There was some variation in the Full Moon names, but in general, the same ones were consistent among regional tribes – those who rely on full moon periods to track crops and harvest.

This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter.

Art by Karl Lindbergh

According to ancient legend, humans will turn into wolves on a Wednesday or Friday when sleeping outdoors on the night of the Full Moon.
He will turn into a wolf when the light of the moon shines on his face. Thankfully, the scientists have disproved this 🙂

Drimpton’s Outdoor Christmas Market – Saturday, 11th December

After the success of their 1st Outdoor Christmas Market last year which so many enjoyed, Drimpton are planning their 2nd OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS MARKET to be held in the open at Drimpton Village Hall on Saturday 11th December from 4pm. (Weather and Covid permitting!)
Just like last year, the Market will have gazebos for stalls and braziers for warmth, so we should be able to socially distance and stay safe while enjoying ourselves. If you have a gazebo you could lend them for the day, that would be really very helpful.
Maybe you would like to have a stall and trade? There will be no charge for your pitch, but a donation would be appreciated as the Market’s proceeds will be split between CLIC SARGENT (which delivers care to children with cancer and their families) and Drimpton Village Hall.
As well as individual stalls there will be a village stall, and contributions for it would be wonderful. No jumble please.
If you would like to book a stall/pitch, or if you would like somebody to collect your donations for the village stall, or if have a spare gazebo you can lend, please contact:
  • Francesca – 01308 8676I7,
  • Lesley – 01308 86724I or
  • Kate – 01308 868843.
More details will follow, and this will include news about Santa, Carols, Lights and maybe some surprise entertainment at the Christmas Market…

Advent windows:

Rev. Jo is coordinating Broadwindsor’s Advent windows (More HERE) and Francesca Hurrell is Drimpton’s coordinator.

Last Christmas, Drimpton’s villagers produced a fabulous display of Advent windows around the village (as shown in the picture) and they were a great success, with different households creating a display so each day from the 1st to 24th December had a window. The windows created a wonderful Yuletide atmosphere throughout the village, with many people venturing out each evening to view the latest creations. They are planning to do them again this year.
The theme this time is ‘The Heart of Christmas’, which can be interpreted in any way you choose, the more imaginative the better!
On the first night there will be just one window lit. On the next night a second window will join in. On the next night a third, and so on till we hope there is a whole chain of illuminated decorated windows around the village.
If you would like to participate, let Francesca know on 01308 8676I7 with a preferred date and you’ll be added to the list 🙂

Drimpton Film Club – Wednesday 8th December, 7pm

At Drimpton Village Hall on Wednesday, 8th December – Nomadland (12), 103 minutes.

A victim of the economic crisis of 2008 in America, Fern is driven to packing up what possessions she can fit into her old van and then sets off on the road, but to where? But she is not alone, joining the many nomads in the same situation. They find work, comradeship, a sense of purpose and a sort of nobility in their situation. “Nomadland” is a thought-provoking journey of a woman who has lost not only her husband and her job but also her entire life in the town of Empire which ceased to exist during the recession.

The film won the Oscar Best Picture Award this year and Frances McDormand won the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Fern.

The film is based on a non-fiction book written by Jessica Bruder about the phenomenon of Americans who, in the recession 0f 2007/2009,were forced to adopt the travelling lifestyles in order to survive.

Villager’s Appeal For Site To Land Dorset Air Ambulance Successful

Almost a year ago, Broadwindsor resident, Pip Cadwell published a letter in the Broadwindsor News parish magazine, his suggestion for having landing sites available to the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Since that time, much research has been carried out and now Pip delivers his update:

Some months ago I suggested to the Air Ambulance, the idea of haveing designated landing Zones to enable Emergency staff to deal with emergencies quicker, and therefore reducing the times that they have to get to the patient.

I have sent off, to Air Ambulance Control, the co-ordinates of 3 landing zones for the Air Ambulance, should we ever have to use it .

The Landing zones have been researched and and permisions have been granted by the owners and users of the land on which the Air Ambulance would land.

The 3 zones have been chosen and sent to Ambulance Control, to enable emergency personel to attend incidents quickly and safely , depending on where the emergency takes place. They would save valuble time getting to the patients and it could make the difference between life and death.

I will post maps in the Shop, and the Comrades Hall , and the Pub (when it opens) so that you can all see where the Landing Zones are.

I would like to thank everybody who has given their permission and their time, to use the various locations.

– Pip Cadwell

The three zones are:

  1. School field. (Ambulance control to phone school prior to landing).
  2. Cricket Field.  (Promise not to land on the wicket).
  3. Fullers. (In the adjoining field near the wheelie bins).

Thanks to you Pip!

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is a registered charity, established to provide relief from sickness and injury for the people of Dorset and Somerset, by the provision of an air ambulance service, with an air and road-delivered critical care capability. They receive no direct funding from the Government or the National Lottery and rely on the generosity of the public for support.

Emma House: Girl Guiding Hero

Leader of the 1st Broadwindsor Rainbows, 1st Broadwindsor Guides & 1st West Dorset Rangers, Emma House also holds the positions of County Growth and Retention Coordinator and West Dorset Outside Activities Advisor. An extraordinary accomplishment by itself.
Emma received a Girlguiding Hero award on the evening of Rememberance Day. It reads:

You are a Hero because…

you have gone above and beyond to promote Girl Guiding.your numerous posts on the Dorset Leaders Facebook group lifted the spirits of members during the pandemic. You rose to the challenge & took on the role of County Growth and Retention Coordinator. Whilst still continuing to post inspiring ideas on Facebook reminding us how to promote guiding locally + instigated a regular spotlight on a unit post. You have continued to run local units in your division during lockdown, arranged girl award presentations, promoted stories in the local press + led the way for the County to take part in the Bournemouth Pride Parade.

The Girlguiding Hero award is relatively new and Emma was unaware she had even been nominated or who nominated her.  All those nominated are put to a County Awards Council, discussed and decided upon who will get the award.

Well done Emma!
