Broadwindsor Community Donates To Beaminster Food Bank

The team at the local food bank in Beaminster were delighted to receive products given at cost by Broadwindsor’s Community shop.

Shop manager Kevin with Chairman, Andrew Hookings loading up.

Kevin Madder-Smith, manager at Broadwindsor Community Stores had the forethought to contact Beaminster Food Bank to ask which items they were in short supply of before purchasing their list through the shop’s wholesaler 🙂

The Pink Piggy Bank

A big thank you to all involved…

Reverend Jo Neary and the food bank volunteers who coordinated with the shop’s team, but most of all, you, the customers for your spare change. The contents of the pink piggy bank which sits by the till was turned into essentials which the food bank lacked and little treats for local families in need.

Community Spirit 🙂

Armistice Day

On this day in 1918 the First World War ended. The guns were silenced on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.    Today we remember those who lost their lives in both World Wars and all our servicemen, servicewomen and animals killed or injured since 1945.

In Broadwindsor, there is a new name to be remembered – Jean Decloedt.  As told by farmer and Parish Councillor Andrew Frampton at Monday’s Parish Council meeting…

Jean Decloedt was born in 1916 in London and was the eldest son of two Belgian diplomats. At the breakout of war, Jean joined the RAFVF (Volunteer Force) and was stationed at Burtonwood base near Warrington. His job as a member of the 37th Maintenance Unit was to repair and service allied planes, mainly spitfires and deliver them to squadrons around the country.
On 15 March 1942, Andrew’s late grandfather Jack Frampton, John Studley and Jack Wakely were on Home Guard duty in Broadwindsor. It was a dry, foggy and windy night and they heard the sound of an engine faltering and spluttering. In the cockpit unbeknown to them was Jean Decloedt taking a Super Marine Mk 2 Spitfire BL483 to 317 Squadron, based in Exeter. Sadly, he crashed into Lewesdon Hill on the north side. When the Home Guard reached it they found Jean and he had been killed on impact. Armed with only sticks the Home Guard didn’t know if they would discover a German plane or airman on the run. The following day Dudley Tolley from Wantsley Farm managed to squirrel away one of the wooden propellers which hangs in Beaminster Museum to this day.
Next March is the 80th anniversary of this event. Jean has no surviving family and this story isn’t remembered on Remembrance Sunday.
Councillor Frampton reported that he has set up a meeting with the National Trust Area Officer to discuss the possibility of erecting some form of memorial and information board at Lewesdon, on the site of the crash and will be establishing contact with the Belgian Embassy. The Parish Council expressed its support for a memorial and thanked the Councillor for his efforts in bringing this event to their attention.
Andrew is also liaising with Broadwindsor school and Rev. Jo to become involved.

We are all forgotten after a third generation or 100 years and this poor Pilot has been forgotten much sooner so as a mark of respect and gratitude I would like to honour his sacrifice and memory.” – Andrew Frampton.

Covid Booster Clinic At Beaminster Public Hall – Saturday, 13th November

There will be an extra Covid Booster Clinic in Beaminster Public Hall on Saturday, 13th November. 12.30pm – 5pm.
This will be a walk in clinic only, no appointments necessary.  You just need to:
  • have had your 2nd dose at least 6 months ago
  • be aged 50 and over.  be aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts you at high risk from COVID-19 and the NHS has invited you to book
  • be a frontline health or social care worker

Please note, this is at the Public Hall and not Barton House surgery.

We will take as many patients as capacity and vaccine availability allow, but I need people to be patient. You will need to wait, and potentially to be prepared to come back on a different day if necessary. My team have kindly agreed to give up their Saturday to try and help get people their jab, and we will try our best to help you but we can’t vaccinate West Dorset in one day! Please be patient and respectful, or we will have to revert to booked appointments only in future.
One final point, please don’t turn up to the Town Hall on a day when we are not operating as the Town Council will not be able to help you!
Mike & Team
Beaminster Pharmacy

If you haven’t had both doses of your vaccinations, it is not too late to book an appointment. Visit nhs.uk or call 119.

An Incredible Evening

Approximately 500 people flocked to Broadwindsor’s Cricket Club Pavilion last night to watch Broadwindsor Fun Group’s organised Firework display led by village resident & member of Broadwindsor Fun GroupAndrew Hookings.

Stewards were in place and worked ‘flat out’ for 3 hours, continually guiding people and their families safely in and out of the grounds.

The Fun Group’s Food stall had some people queuing for 50 minutes before completely selling out of burgers and hot dogs, almost exclusively cooked by Vice-chairman, Martin Burt with his trusty meat thermomenter! Delicious hot soups and mulled wine also sold very well.
The Cricket Club’s bar sold out too, with a quick trip to the Co-op required to stock up!

All those involved under estimated the crowd who attended and this has been attributed to local advertising; no other local organised displays taking place; the forecast of dry weather and admission was free 🙂

Special thanks must go to Margery Hookings who raised an astonishing  £743.07 in her special family collection bucket!

Incredible. I can’t recall ever seeing that many people in the village” was one local comment made.  David Leader, who worked with the BFG Core group on the food stall stated “I don’t think I have ever been involved in catering for so many people in such a short period of time.” Cars parking on the verges at Cross Keys and on the grass area at the front of Redlands Lane was not appreciated but thankfully were there for just one hour.

Broadwindsor House have posted lovely videos on their Facebook page – Click HERE & HERE.

A huge thank you to all involved and all who came along to support the event!

Following the success of this event, Broadwindsor Fun Group and Broadwindsor Cricket Club will have a debrief meeting with a view to holding the event next year.

Don’t forget…

This Tuesday evening at 7.30pm – Broadwindsor Fun Group are holding their Open Planning meeting to discuss 2022’s Jubilee’s celebrations and more fundraising dates.
All are welcome.  For more information and the Agenda – Click HERE.
