  • Plants: £33.50 + ?*
  • Cakes: £75.50
  • Books & Puzzles: £31.00

Sally added “I just wanted to let you know how much money we made…. Not quite as good as the previous one last May but, knowing now we must be a little more careful with our cash, I am not surprised that we made £575. *However, it is possible that a little more might come our way from Val & Colin Lawrence who kindly put a table with plants for sale outside their cottage in Burstock.
I wanted to say a big thank you from Philip, Diana and myself for your support and invaluable help in making the event a success.
Thank you very much.
With best wishes and kind regards,
Sally Sarling.

Target Achieved & Work Begins At Bernards’ Place

The play area in Bernards’ Place is now out of bounds for an estimated two weeks as the big machinery moved in today…

Encouraging and uplifting news was received earlier when Dorset Council announced that they are awarding the Broadwindsor Village Green Appeal a grant of £15,000 from its Capital Leverage Fund. The aim of the Capital Leverage Fund is to support community and cultural organisations to deliver capital projects which provide new and improved facilities for our communities and residents. The fund also helps organisations secure additional support from funders outside of their organisation.

This will take the amount above and beyond the £20,000 target of their Crowdfunder appeal which has been extended for a few more weeks so that the grant money can be paid in to qualify for our Sport England pledge of £8,000.

The extra funds mean that electricity will be able to run to the Christmas tree on Bernards’ Place and then to the lovely oak-framed shelter, which has been put up by a team of local volunteers.
It will also help us buy adult exercise equipment for the village green and pay for instructor-led classes in the open air.
The organisers at the Comrades Hall posted their thanks on social media:
“Thank you, Dorset Council for supporting our project and the Broadwindsor community. The same goes for Sport England, whose pledge from the Places and Spaces Fund (a lasting legacy of the 2022 Commonwealth Games) has given the appeal a tremendous boost.
We’ve had support from Broadwindsor Group Parish Council and the local FMR Trust, for which we are extremely grateful. The National Lottery Community Fund has also made a huge difference in getting our fundraising off the ground in the first place. Thank you!
And massive thanks to you – our gorgeous Crowd and our lovely Reward givers – for making this project happen.
Fundraising will continue so that the vision of Bernards’ Place as a village green for everyone – of all ages – becomes reality.

Your support is very humbling and a testament to the goodwill and generosity of local people. You are having such a big impact on this brilliant project.”

Local School Transport

Broadwindsor pupil Lottie Banner got a pleasant surprise this afternoon upon leaving school…. on turning the corner, there was Mum Jo standing their with her pony Cindy to take her home 🙂

Cindy attracted a lot of attention and compliments from passers by while she patiently waited.

Lottie wasted no time in putting her hat on and mounting her pony. With a confident smile, her Mum led Cindy back to their home in Hursey.

Full Moon – Sunday, 9th October

The Moon will be at it’s fullest at 9.55pm today. Referred to as the “Hunter’s Moon” it signaled the time to go hunting in preparation for the cold winter ahead. Animals are beginning to fatten up ahead of winter, and since the farmers had recently cleaned out their fields under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily see the deer and other animals that had come out to root through the remaining scraps (as well as the foxes and wolves that had come out to prey on them).

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the earliest use of the term “Hunter’s Moon,” cited in the Oxford English Dictionary, is from 1710.

Other names this lunation is known by:

  • Blood Moon or Sanguine Moon
  • Falling Leaves Moon
  • Freezing Moon or Ice Moon
  • Migrating Moon

The first full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon, means that it can occur in either October or November.

Also look out for the Orionid meteor shower which will peak on the night of 21-22 October between midnight and dawn. However, if you’re out looking, you should be able to see the shower for several days either side of this ‘peak’ date.

Broadwindsor Film Club – Friday, 21st October

At 7.30pm at the Comrades Hall on Friday, 21st October, Broadwindsor’s Community Film Club will be showing…

The Duke (12)

Directed by Roger Michell and starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. Running time: 96 minutes.

In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London.  It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history.  Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on the condition that the Government invested more in care for the elderly – he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television.  What happened next became the stuff of legend.  Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies.  The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale.

  • Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm.
