Dog-Napping – How To Prevent It

Having your canine companion dog-napped would be a horrendous ordeal. Sadly this crime is on the increase. A petition calling on the Government to make dog theft a specific offence had gathered over 316,500 signatures meaning it is well over the threshold to be considered for debate in parliament.

Around 29,000 people across the South West have contributed their signature to the cause. There are measures you can take to reduce the risk of this happening to you.

Today Is World Suicide Prevention Day

Every year on 10th September since 2003, organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

In the UK, men are three times as likely to die by suicide than women. In the Republic of Ireland, the rate is four times higher among men than women.  While there has been a reduction in the number of people completing suicide over the last ten years, the numbers are still worryingly high.

One in every 100 deaths worldwide is the result of suicide. It can affect every one of us. Each and every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide and encouraging well-informed action, we can reduce instances of suicide around the world. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of suicide and to promote action through proven means that will reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts globally.

Suicidal thoughts are complex. The factors and causes that lead to suicide are complex and many. No single approach works for everyone. The COVID-19 Pandemic has contributed to increased feelings of isolation and vulnerability.

You can help give someone hope by showing that you care. All of us can play a role, no matter how small. We may never know what we do that makes a difference. We all can reach in and ask somebody. You do not need to tell them what to do or have solutions, but simply making the time and space to listen to someone about their experiences of distress or suicidal thoughts can help. Small talk can save lives and create a sense of connection and hope in somebody who may be struggling.

To prevent suicide requires us to become a beacon of light to those in pain. You can be the light.

Please support @samaritans this  World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day – call 116 123 or Text SHOUT to 85258.

Broadwindsor Skittles Needs You!

Broadwindsor’s Skittles Club are planning to start playing skittles in the Comrades Hall again.  To begin with, it will be only one Thursday a month (which as yet is undecided!). Plus, they need to drum up interest as they currently do not have enough members.

They are a small friendly club meeting at 7.30pm once a month on a Thursday (TBA) in the Lewesdon Room upstairs at Comrades Hall.  Playing for enjoyment rather than competitively.

They are looking to resume the club, but need more players.  No previous skittling required!  Go along and have a try for free and join the club if you like it.

Only a few £ to play to cover the costs of hire 🙂

Please register your interest/get details from Emma at broadwindsorem@gmail.com.

Letter Of Thanks To Fun Day’s Community

Good afternoon, my name is Kate Staff and I held the cake raffle at Broadwindsor’s Fun Day.
I would like to thank everyone that supported me in raising money.
My aim was not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness. I had never heard of TS (Turner Syndrome) until my daughter Louise was diagnosed at the age of 18yrs.
As a child she suffered and encountered numerous difficulties both physical and emotional some of which will be with her for life and if an earlier diagnosis was made she would have had a completely different childhood/education and friendships would have been a lot easier as she wouldn’t have felt as if she didn’t belong or fit in.
It was just by chance that our GP suggested she should be tested for TS and after reading all the signs and symptoms of TS, I was stunned to realise that Louise had roughly 80% of them. All of which were not detected by doctors/nurses/ENT specialists but most of all me!
I carry a strong feeling of guilt, that as her mother I didn’t do enough, as I always knew she wasn’t like other children her age and thought she may be on the lower end of the spectrum scale but then again no 2 children are the same are they?!
I have questioned myself over and over again “Why didn’t I know? Why didn’t I do something?” I can only put it down to lack of knowledge across the board so raising awareness has become very important to me. It won’t change things for Louise but if the signs and symptoms are known and talked about it might help others to get diagnosed earlier.

Thank you everyone 🦋 x
