Drimpton’s Bunting Bonanza

A colourful and commemorative idea from Drimpton promoting Village Community:

At some point we will emerge from Lockdown and once again be able to come together as a community. In anticipation of that, three ladies in Drimpton are planning to celebrate by decorating Drimpton with bunting made by the village.
So if you’re looking for something to while away a bit of time, why not tap into your creative juices and design one or more flags to represent you, your family, 2020, Drimpton, or anything else you fancy!
It can be drawn, painted, sewn, knitted (pattern below) glued, appliquéd or anything else you can think of – the choice is yours. There are no rules apart from the size (a triangle measuring 20cm x 30cm).
They hope to be able to have a coffee morning in March (restrictions permitting) where you can bring along your completed bunting flags. They’ll then take them away and stitch them together to create the commemorative village bunting that will be a lasting reminder of these extraordinary times for years to come.
For further details or queries (and bunting templates if required) contact:

A Year Ago Today ….

The photograph shows the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan.

This was reported by journalist Tom Hale at 12.39pm, 6th January 2020:

“An unidentified virus has struck dozens of people in Wuhan, the most populous city in Central China.

At least 59 cases have been confirmed so far, including seven patients who are critically ill, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Committee. A further 163 people are also under medical observation after coming into close contact with the infected people.

Hong Kong authorities have activated a “serious response” level in reaction to eight possible cases of an illness they believe to be associated with visitors from the mainland Chinese city, reports the Associated Press.

All of the patients have fallen sick with pneumonia or severe respiratory tract infections, with many experiencing fever and breathing difficulties, although the source of the illness is not yet known.

There was speculation that the outbreak could be linked to SARS, the respiratory illness that started in China in 2002 and went on to kill over 700 people around the world. However, local health authorities have since ruled this out. They have also excluded the possibility of regular influenza, avian flu, adenoviruses, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The earliest case was reported on December 12, 2019, and the number of patients is continuing to grow. Many of the sick work at South China Seafood City market in Wuhan, which has been closed for sanitation and disinfection since January 1. Along with fish and seafood, the large wholesale market is also said to sell wild animals, such as rabbits and pheasants.

“Citizens should pay attention to maintaining indoor air circulation, avoiding closed and airless public places and crowded places, and wear masks if necessary,” Wuhan health authorities said in a statement.

According to the World Health Organization, the strong link to the market suggests that the illness is caused by a virus that spreads between animals and humans. This is what’s known as a zoonotic disease and includes most human infectious diseases, from swine flu and salmonella to Ebola and HIV.

So far, local health authorities say lab tests have shown there’s no evidence of significant human-to-human transmission and no health care worker infections have been reported.

However, the Head of the University of Hong Kong’s Centre for Infection, Ho Pak-leung, has thrown doubt on this claim by saying it’s “highly possible” that the illness is spreading from human to human. He also warned that there could be a surge in cases during the upcoming Chinese New Year on January 25.

“It is highly unlikely that this will lead to a major 2003-like epidemic, though we cannot be complacent,” said Yuen Kwok-yung, a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong, according to TIME.”

… and here we are today!

Stay Safe Everybody!

No Fishing at Potwell Lake

Potwell Lake is situated in picturesque, rural landscape of West Dorset on the Mosterton Road.  A newly constructed lake, it offers visitors opportunities to fish for carp, tench, bream and roach.  Sadly, Rachael has had to close the gates to fishermen due to the guidelines issued by the Government and by Jamie Cook, the CEO of The Angling Trust, who released this statement yesterday:

“The regulations have now been published and confirm this evening’s message from the Cabinet Office that the Government have taken the decision that fishing will not be permitted during this national lockdown period. Whilst this is disappointing news I would ask anglers, fisheries and clubs to respect these rules and the reason they have been put in place; to help save lives and support the NHS.

Individuals should not go fishing from midnight tonight (5th Jan) and clubs and fisheries should close their waters to anglers. We will be publishing more detailed guidance on specific areas like bailiffing and fishery maintenance once the Government regulations have been examined.
Over past few weeks we have been in communication with the Government at the highest possible level. We have presented a strong case on how fishing could continue safely during the third national lockdown. We have explained that fishing benefits physical health and mental wellbeing and that it is regularly the only form of activity individuals undertake. You can read our representations to Cabinet Ministers here –https://anglingtrust.net/…/Angling-and-outdoor…
My team and I have consistently presented the arguments ahead of the changing government guidelines, which have allowed fishing to remain permitted continuously since the first national lockdown was lifted in May. We have been successful when other sports have not as all anglers will know.
However, with 60,000 new infections announced today the Government have taken the decision that leaving home for recreation or leisure, including all forms of recreational fishing, should be prohibited in England during this third national lockdown period.
I thank you for your support and for being a credit to our sport. As members, you can rest assured that the Angling Trust will continue to represent our sport at the highest level and will present proposals for the resumption of angling when it is safe and sensible to do so. We will come through this period of national crisis. We will fish again, but until then, please, stay safe.” – Jamie CookCEO Angling Trust
For further information, please contact Rachael on 07919 091 508, 01308 868718 or you can email: potwell@hotmail.co.uk .

Refuge Against Domestic Violence

Since COVID-19 began, it has been widely broadcast that there has been a significant rise in cases of domestic abuse. The Domestic Abuse Bill had it’s second reading in the House of Lords yesterday afternoon seeking to raise awareness of domestic abuse, including by legislating for the first time for a statutory definition of domestic abuse. The Bill aims to protect and support victims by introducing a new Domestic Abuse Protection Notice and Order (DAPO).*

For those in need, Refuge.org.uk operates a Free 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247.
There is also a live chat service Mon – Fri 3pm – 10pm via NationalDAHelpline.org.uk.

Refuge are running a campaign to deliver Refuge parcels: bundles that women and children urgently need when escaping domestic violence.  The parcels range from £10 (Calls to the 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline have increased since lockdown measures were introduced. Their support is needed more than ever by women affected by domestic abuse. This parcel could enable them to continue providing life-saving support through their Helpline) through various increments to £500 (Their refuges provide emergency temporary accommodation for women and children fleeing abuse. They give women time and space to make decisions about their futures and their specialist refuge staff are on hand to provide one-to-one emotional and practical support. This parcel could keep one of their 48 refuges running for a day.)

Click HERE to choose your parcel and donate.

* The Bill’s Key Messages are:

  • The Domestic Abuse Bill introduces important measures which will help to raise awareness of domestic abuse and will go some way to providing additional support to domestic abuse victims, whilst also helping to challenge perpetrator’s behaviour. It is a positive step in the right direction.
  • We support the creation of a statutory definition of domestic abuse, and the inclusion of economic abuse within this. We are also pleased to see that the Bill will place the role of Domestic Abuse Commissioner on a statutory footing.
  • Alongside the Bill’s focus on crisis interventions and criminal justice, tackling domestic abuse requires a cross-government response incorporating health, housing and education. We need an equal focus on, and funding for, prevention and early intervention measures that aims to prevent domestic abuse happening in the first place.
  • In addition to the measures in the Bill, the Government should provide long-term and sustained investment in early intervention and prevention programmes and wider community-based support. This should include investment in perpetrator programmes, which is why we are calling on the Government to introduce a National Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Strategy. We are also calling for the key learning and best practice from Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs) to be shared on a national level.
  • This legislation comes at a time when, even prior to the eventual long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, local government’s services, particularly children’s services, were already facing unprecedented demand.
  • The Spending Review announcement of £125 million funding to help enable local authorities to deliver the proposed new duty to support domestic abuse victims and their children in safe accommodation is welcome. We now need further detail on this funding as it is not yet clear how the figure has been calculated and whether it will meet the full costs of the new proposed duty.
  • The new funding needs to fully account for any increases in demand for services, and any additional burdens identified by local needs assessments when the duty comes into force in April 2021. Children have been added into the statutory definition of domestic abuse, so it will be important to assess whether additional provision is required and therefore whether councils need additional funding to meet the new proposed duty.
  • One-off, short term grants do not allow for long-term planning or consistency in service, which is why long-term and sustained investment is needed. Transitional funding is also required to provide support for current domestic abuse services due to close at the end of the next financial year, April 1 2021.
