Could You Become A Fireman?

Many children say they want to be a fireman when they grow up and a brave few grow up to be just that.  Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service are recruiting.

You will be able to register your interest and start your application from 10am on Monday 5 October 2020.  All applications must be completed before the closing date of midnight on Friday 9 October 2020.

Due to the high volumes of application, the process will be managed online and supported by email only and you will be given clear instructions, and how to access support if needed, at each stage.

What GCSE’s/Qualifications do you need?

You do not need to have any GCSEs or Qualifications in order to apply to this process. They will be assessing candidates through the online ability test process that they have put in place.

Do you have these characteristics?

  • Are you a role model that leads by example?
  • Are you a team player?
  • Want to work within your community and make a difference?
  • Looking for a challenging and rewarding career?
  • Respect for diversity, with a fair and ethical approach?
  • Do you have physical and mental strength?
  • Are you calm under pressure with the ability to work outside your comfort zone?
  • Can you stay focused and achieve a goal under stressful emergency situations?
  • Do you have the drive, ability and initiative to make a positive personal impact?
  • Are you able to work at height and in dark confined spaces?

At the initial stage of the recruitment process, they ask you to sit online tests. These include Situational Judgment Test and a Behavioral Style Questionnaire (Clicking the link will download the pdf document to your device.) and Fire Service Ability Tests in verbal, numerical and mechanical reasoning. These will be completed online at home.

Here is an idea of what to expect in the tests:

The test comprises 12 questions and you will have 9 minutes to answer them to the best of your ability.
You will be presented with passages of information and four statements about that passage. For each of the four statements you must select one of the following answers:

1) True (the statement is definitely true based solely on the information contained in the passage)

2) False (the statement is definitely false based solely on the information contained in the passage)

3) Cannot Say (it cannot be determined whether the statement is true or false without further information)

This test does not count towards your real assessment in any way, it is purely for the purpose of candidate preparation. This example test is shorter than the real FRS Verbal Reasoning test which comprises 20 questions and has a maximum time limit of 15 minutes.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and RescueThey recommend that their assessments are completed on either a desktop or laptop computer.   It is not recommended to complete the assessments using a tablet or mobile device.

Young Dog Dies of Blue Algae Poisoning in River Yeo

Just next door in Somerset, this beautiful dog, Fern sadly lost her young life last night due to Blue Algae poisoning from the river Yeo. Fern was swimming in the weir at Mudford, Yeovil.

Naturally, the family are devastated. They have shared her photograph and want to highlight the incident and remind all dog owners to please “be aware that this awful deadly algae can kill your much loved family pet within minutes.  Please tell anyone who may be walking their dogs along this river“.

Broadwindsor.org published a post at the beginning of August 2020 highlighting the dangers and symptoms of Blue Algae Poisoning. Read the full article HERE.

If you become aware of a location with Blue Green Algaeplease report it to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.
They will be able to test the water and put a sign up to warn other people if blue-green algae is found. It’s better to be safe than sorry so if you’re worried, please report it.

Bernards’ Place Trough Now Filled

The village trough in Bernards’ Pace has now been planted up.  Chairman of the Comrades Hall Committee, David Leader (pictured on the left) said:

“Most of the plants were donated by Colin and Valerie Lawrence from Burstock for which we are incredibly grateful. A few including bulbs were sourced from Little Groves, Beaminster at a discounted price.  We are going to plant some bulbs in front of the picket fence by the pump to add to the visual appearance.”

Trough at Bernards' Place

“This is a Comrades Hall committee initiative to improve the appearance of Bernard’s Place, this is just the start of a long plan of improvements.

Huge thanks goes to Ruth Stevens (centre) who has volunteered to take on the ongoing care for the trough and Morgan Napier (right) for helping out at every stage of the venture.”

Well done everybody!

Test and Trace News From Dorset Council

Tomorrow, 24 September, the Government is launching a new Test and Trace app to help prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus.

We are lucky to still have a relatively low infection rate here in Dorset and the app will help this trend continue. Everyone who downloads the app is helping to prevent the spread of the virus by notifying users if they have come into contact with someone who may later test positive for coronavirus.

From tomorrow you will be able to go to your usual app store on your smartphone and download the app – search for NHS COVID-19. Some features of the app include risk alerts by postcode, a symptom checker and test booking.  Please be assured that the app tracks the virus, not the individual.

It is also now mandatory for some businesses and organisations to have a system in place to collect visitor data and keep it for 21 days. The Council have contacted Dorset’s businesses, their town and parish councils and their own local council services about this new legal requirement and have asked them to display NHS QR code posters in their properties ahead of the app launch tomorrow.

The venues affected include those in the following sectors:
• hospitality
• leisure and tourism
• close contact services (such as salons)
• places of worship
• local authority venues (such as Libraries, Registration Offices, Leisure Centres and Town and Village Halls)
From tomorrow we should start seeing these businesses with the NHS QR posters in their venues for customers and users to check-in with the new NHS COVID-app at that location.

If we all download and start using the app, we will be doing our bit to keep each other safe and stop infection rates in Dorset rising.

For more information on how to download and use the app – click HERE.

What if you don’t have a smartphone? Don’t worry if you don’t have a smartphone, businesses may continue to collect customers’ data using a log book or other paper method.

For all questions about the app please click HERE.

This Week is #RecycleWeek2020

It’s Recycle Week 2020! (21 – 27 September). Wherever you live. Wherever you call home. 89% of us recycle. Keep doing your bit. This year and every year.
In Broadwindsor,

  • there are recycling bins are at Redlands Yard  for tetrapaks and aluminium foil respectively.
  • there are recycling bins for crisp packets at Bernards’ Place and outside the school.
  • there are two large clothes recycling banks, also outside of the school.

Please remember to wash and crush your tetrapaks or the bins will fill up too quickly.  Please don’t put an item in the recycling bin if it’s not meant to go in there – the volunteers then have the undesirable job of having to sort through it all!

The local Eco-Group would welcome new volunteers to empty the two bins by Redlands Yard.  It needs emptied weekly and a monthly visit to Bridport Recycling Centre.  There is a rota, but more help is always welcome.  Usually a volunteer will have two dates allocated. All that is required are three black bin bags: one for aluminium and two for tetrapaks. Please contact Jackie Riley HERE or call her on 01308 868949.

Dorset CouncilBridport Recycling Centre is located at Broomhills Nursery, West Bay Fields, Bridport, Dorset DT6 5LB and is open 9am – 6pm (at the time of publishing).  Regular opening hours are due to change on October 1st but Government Guidelines and Regulations re: Covid-19 may change opening times before then.
All the following items are accepted at Bridport Recycling Centre:

Asbestos cannot be taken to this recycling centre.

There are van and trailer restrictions: Vans must have a valid permit or a hire agreement of a maximum of 3 days.
Vehicles that don’t require a permit can use a trailer, but the maximum trailer size is 1.2 metres wide and 1.8 metres long (approx. 6ft x 4ft).

Draw A Pumpkin for Your Window in Half Term Holiday

The following idea is becoming increasing popular through the social media platform Facebook – there is no indication of who first posted the idea but perhaps they had inspiration from Rev. Jo with her Advent Window Trail.

Monday 26th – Friday 30th October 2020 is scheduled to be Half Term Holiday week with Hallowe’en on the Saturday.  With Covid-19, Government restrictions and common sense – Trick or Treating is not an activity to do this year.

Draw a Pumpkin!

Draw a pumpkin for Hallowe'enThere appears to be a lot of enthusiasm generated already – let’s have our parishioners, young and old join in and put a Pumpkin drawing in your window this October.  A reminder will be published a few days before 🙂
