Carer’s Week: Mon 7th – Sun 13th June 2021

Carer’s Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify themselves as carers and access much-needed support.

New research shows 72% of carers have not had any breaks from their caring role since the start of the pandemic.  They have lost, on average, 25 hours of support a month they previously had from services or family and friends before the pandemic.

This year Carers Week is shining a spotlight on the lack of breaks that carers have been able to take in the past year, and the worrying impact this is having on their health and wellbeing, as well as their ability to work and live a meaningful life beyond caring.

To address this situation, they are calling on the government to urgently increase funding for carers’ breaks by an additional £1.2 billion, so all carers providing significant hours of care can take a break.  They are asking you to write to your MP by clicking the link HEREand that you please forward any response you receive from your MP to policy@carersuk.org, so that they can follow up with them, if you are happy to do so.

Carer’s Allowance:

Carer’s Allowance is the main benefit for carers. If you are looking after someone for 35 hours a week or more, you may be eligible. Carer’s Allowance is currently £67.60 a week (2021-22) and is taxable income.
The Government has also confirmed that providing emotional support counts towards the Carer’s Allowance threshold of 35 hours of care a week across the UK. These measures have been extended until August 2021.

Farmers! Please Submit Your Evidence

Cameron Farquharson’s cow Gladis made the national news last week, sadly for tragic reasons.  Her death has highlighted the need for farmers to have more say in taking care of their livestock in dealing with dogs off their leads.

When Cameron announced the very sad news on Facebook the following day, he begged, as all our local farmers repeatedly do to “please please please adhere to the notice on the gate and KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEAD!” He added ” We cannot afford in financial terms and for mine and my children’s mental well-being to continuously deal with these distressing losses.”  His post was shared over 10,000 times and made the BBC news.

Cameron and his family, who run Redlands Coppice, are now working with a group of farmers, farming related businesses and an MP to bring about a change in the law to give livestock more protection which they are calling Gladis’s Law.  They are trying to make contact with as many local farmers, smallholders holders and general livestock owners who have experienced dog attacks or worrying on their livestock in order to collate as much evidence of the problem as possible. Gladis’s Law would make it an offence for dogs to be off lead on farm land or land with animals grazing.

Cameron’s family were “overwhelmed by the kindness shown” to them, as a family…. “so many we are not able to respond personally to each individual person as we would like. We have made this short video to introduce you to our hairy coos and say a personal thank you.“

 

Gladis died on 27th May on Eggardon Hill when dogs (reportedly Labradors) chased her to death killing both her and her full term unborn calf. R.I.P. Gladis x

Dorset Police Rural Crime Team also released a two and a half minute video on Facebook on Saturday about putting dogs on a lead which you can view HERE.

Astronomy – 3pm, Wednesday 9th June

Village resident Peter Davies will present his 3rd session for those with an interest in Astronomy this Wednesday at 3pm on Zoom.

This month there will be a recap on previous content and then move onto the subject of Time.

The sessions are 90 minutes each and there will be a 5-10 min break for tea after 40 mins.  Peter does recommend having a notepad and pen to take any notes. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions and/or discussion.

Witness Appeal: Broadwindsor Community Stores

Any witnesses to a vehicle, most probably a medium van turning around in front of shop and colliding with the canopy of the village shop are asked to please step forward.

The incident happened on the morning of Wednesday 2nd June. It is presumed that it happened before opening as the noise most certainly would have alerted staff and/or customers. Volunteer, Philip Coltart noticed the damage when coming in on duty. The vehicle involved cannot have escaped without damage to the rear of their vehicle as the 6×2 inch timber has been broken. Broadwindsor Community Stores to date, have found no witnesses to the incident.

Chris Edgerley, who will be reparing it in the next couple of weeks commented “It is going to be complex to fix without taking the whole structure down but that is my problem. I have done a temporary repair to pull the whole structure together.”

Celebrate With Broadwindsor Cricket Club

All are welcome at 2pm tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at the Grand Opening of Broadwindsor Cricket Club.

Clive Stafford-Smith announced on Twitter last night that it was thanks to the generosity shown that the Club had been saved.  He also teased that there will be a “mystery England former test cricketer appearing for my team against regulars…”

In preparation for the Club’s Centenary, Clive Stafford-Smith OBE has carried out some research and is collating the history of the Club.  Read more HERE.

Summer Bus Timetable

Wessex Transport have produced their summer brochure with the bus timetables for Weymouth and the Jurassic coast.

Below are the timetables for our local service: you can get a bus from the White Lion in Broadwindsor to Yeovil at 10.09hrs or 13.29hrs.


There are three buses to take you to Bridport from the Old Bakery at 09.42hrs., 13.40hrs. and 17.27hrs.

Pride Month

Happy Pride Month to all LGBTQIA+ supporters.

LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer or Questioning.
More recently, I and A have been added to the acronym to represent Intersex and Asexual.
The + represents those not included in the original acronym, in terms of gender identity or sexual orientation e.g. Pan and Nonbinary.

Pride is not to be confused with LGBTQ+ History Month which is in February to coincide with the abolition of section 28 in 2003.

Section 28 was a law that prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality” and hindered education about homosexuality in schools. Introduced by Margaret Thatcher and her Conservative government in 1988 and then repealed by Tony Blair’s Labour in 2003 (this was after an earlier, unsuccessful attempt in 2000).

PRIDE

Pride is held in June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of protests that happened in New York city after police attempted to raid the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar, in the early hours of June 28, 1969.
The confrontation sparked a gay rights uprising that grew year on year – including in other American cities and abroad – with each passing anniversary.
The Stonewall Inn is now a designated US national monument, and New York City Police issued an apology 50 years later in June 2019 for its officers’ actions back in 1969.

In the UK, inspired by this movement and founded in 1989 to lobby for equal rights for LGBT people, Stonewall is now the biggest LGBTQ+ rights organisation in Europe. Describing themselves as “a team of bold, passionate people fighting for the freedom, equity and potential of LGBTQ+ people everywhere.”

They stand for lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, questioning and ace (LGBTQ+) people everywhere. They imagine a world where all LGBTQ+ people are free to be themselves and can live their lives to the full.

This is the 1st Pride Flag designed by Gilbert Baker, which appeared in 1977. Commissioned by a gay politician, he was inspired by Judy Garland’s ‘Over The Rainbow‘ and the colours symbolised the following: Hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit.

Drimpton FC – Annual Awards

Drimpton Football Club held their Annual Awards last weekend at The Royal Oak in Drimpton.
Manager Andy Loudon and Chairman David Symonds both thanked the players and officials for all their efforts this season. The sponsors St Michael’s Trading Estate in Bridport were also thanked for their generosity in sponsoring the kit and training jackets.
