The Telephone Box Lending Library in the village square is open 🙂 You may now borrow and/or exchange your books there. Although monitored, users are asked to please help keep it tidy and enjoy it!
Chris Edgerley, who restored and refurbished the box with the help of Malcolm Heaver, has provided the following facts and information, which it is hoped to have displayed inside the box in the future…
GPO Telephone Box model K6
1935 – 1970
Our telephone box is looking magnificent having been completely renovated by village resident Chris Edgerley and his helpers. A magnificent achievement – our sincere thanks to Chris.
The etched glass effect was done by Karen and Godfrey at Bridport Banners.
Purpose made shelves have been constructed by Malcolm Heaver – our sincere thanks to Malcolm.
Wendy Shields & Ruth Stevens will be managing the books on an ongoing basis – NO MAGAZINES PLEASE!!
Once again the village is indebted to Chris Edgerley and his helpers who are restoring the historic phone box in the centre of the village.
They are doing a wonderful job and it will become a great library and book exchange for the use of all residents. Malcolm Heaver will make a purpose built shelving system using all his carpentry skills.
Our again sincere thanks to all the people who have brought this important landmark back to life.
Wendy Shields will manage the library on an ongoing basis.
The old telephone box in the village is being renovated. Chris Edgerly is leading on this and has already started to repair the door which is in poor condition.
Like all projects there is much more to it than would at first be imagined. The project will take until the end of this year and then we will have a wonderfully restored piece of architectural history.
Afterwards, it will continue to operate as a library for the use of all the community.
As always considerable thanks goes to Chris for his hard work and expertise.
90 year old William Shatner, the actor known best for his role as Captain James T. Kirk, of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the original “Star Trek,” and three others will embark on a brief journey to the edge of space this afternoon.
You can watch the launch LIVE at 2.30pm (BST) on Blue Origin’s YouTube channel – Click HERE. The video will begin about 90 minutes before the flight. (Blue Origin is the name of Jeff Bezos Space company.)
The launch was scheduled for yesterday but windy conditions over West Texas moved it forward 24 hours to today. If more strong winds occur today, the company could choose to delay the flight by another 24 hours, to Thursday.
Three other passengers will join William Shatner on Wednesday’s flight:
Audrey Powers, a Blue Origin vice president who oversees New Shepard flight operations; like Mr. Shatner, she did not have to pay for her seat.
Chris Boshuizen, a co-founder of Planet Labs, a company that builds small satellites, also known as CubeSats, that are used by assorted clients for monitoring Earth from orbit.
Glen de Vries, a chief executive and co-founder of Medidata Solutions, a company that built software for clinical trials.
Dr. Boshuizen & Mr. de Vries are the second and third paying passengers to fly on a Blue Origin flight. The first was Oliver Daemen, an 18-year-old man from the Netherlands. The company has not disclosed how much any of these customers paid for their seats on the flights.
When interviewed on Monday, William Shatner said “I’m thrilled and anxious, and a little nervous and a little frightened, about this whole new adventure.”
Broadwindsor’s Telephone Box, which has been operating as a Book & DVD Exchange, was recently formerly adopted by our Parish Council. Sadly, people continue to leave bags and piles of magazines on the floor of the telephone box – they are not suitable at all: creating mouldy paper and an unpleasant experience for anyone entering the telephone box. Please show our Telephone Book Exchange some respect.
This week, all the mouldy magazines were removed and the books boxed up as work begins on fitting proper shelves inside and painting the exterior.
The work is being carried out on a voluntary basis by village resident Chris Edgerley, who rebuilt the ammonite wall in Bernards’ Place in the Spring of this year.
Broadwindsor’s Group Parish Council now own the red telephone box by Bernards’ Place 🙂 With all the formalities complete, they are now in need of volunteers able to assist with getting it painted.
The telephone box continues to be used as a Book Exchange.
Anyone able to help, please contact Cllr. David Leader:
Regular users of the website (rather then the Facebook page or Twitter Feed) will notice a new sub menu item – Tales From The Telephone Box.
At the end of January this year, Margery Hookings invited users of the telephone box Book Exchange to submit their book reviews. The response has been good and she has published several on her blog already. Read more HERE.

The photograph, taken today shows that the telephone from the telephone box in Broadwindsor’s square has now been removed. This indicates that the legalities of the Parish Council adopting it may have concluded. Consequently, many books which were on top of the telephonehave now been piled on the floor which is not suitable due to the damp conditions.
The number of books has increased too. It is meant to be serving as a Book Exchange and not a place for a carrier bag or bundle of books to be left, particularly if there is clearly no room to accommodate them at this time. Once the legalities are final, the Parish Council do intend to renovate the telephone box – which may involve putting up shelves for books as the book exchange does seem to be working well. It is not an item on the Parish Council’s agenda this Monday – which is extensive already – but please help keep it tidy 🙂
To celebrate World Book Day, and the incredulous date which will never occur again, Broadwindsor.org produced over three dozen memorable bookmarks for the children who use or accompany their parents to the telephone box.
Apologies as they were a day late due to technical problems!
