Petition to Help Sheep Farmers Make a Decent Income From Their Fleeces

The 1000 wool fleeces in the photograph are about to be incorporated into the manure heap.
What a waste of a once valuable resource. A sustainable product that could be used to insulate homes for all government grant supported buildings.
Sheep farmers receive less for their wool than the cost of shearing the sheep. Last year David Jones, who is pictured with his wool above, received 28p a fleece and paid the shearer £1. This year the value it set to drop by at least half. Hence he and many other farmer’s across the country, decision to plough their wool into the fields as fertiliser.

Wool is sustainable, fire-retardant, bio-degradable, and the most efficient form of insulation.

A Great Big Thank You!

A great big thank you to all the wonderful people who gave up their Sunday morning to make a start on the tidy up of Bernards’ Place and the areas around the Comrades Hall. We thought we would end up with a few dumpy bags of waste but ended up with a skip load. It was a fantastic community effort. There are too many hardy soles to name everyone individually, a sincere thank you to you all.
All the play equipment is now open apart from the large swing which needs some further attention.
The baby swing has got to be removed as it does not meet current standards.
All the other equipment has had the work done to it rectify faults identified in the recent RoSPA report 🙂
There are lots of plans for Bernards’ Place and for the Comrades Hall being considered, as these plans develop we will share them with all of you for your thoughts.
With my sincere thanks

David Leader

  • 7.30pm – Procession departs Mosterton. Slow drive.

Rob Ridge and Dom Brown, known for The Trick Factory indoor skate park which closed in St Michael’s, Bridport in 2016 got the thumbs up from Dorset Council to change the use of unit 2A from a general industrial unit, to a skate park, with support by Bradpole parish council.  They and their team would like to thank all those who donated to the facility’s Crowdfunder and all the local businesses that donated money or equipment.
They are still seeking volunteers to supervise and businesses to advertise at the skate park.  Keep up to date and communicate with them through their Facebook page HERE.

Comet Neowise & Perseids

It’s your last chance to catch Comet Neowise before it goes back into the outer solar system and doesn’t reappear until 6,800 years!
The comet is currently about as bright as Polaris, the North Star, and can be observed in dark skies without the aid of a telescope or binoculars. Look East. The comet will appear underneath the Plough constellation, and just above the horizon. By the weekend, the comet will have moved so that it is directly underneath the Plough, as it moves further westwards and slightly higher on our horizon every night.

The beautiful photograph shows Comet Neowise behind St. John the Baptist Church in Broadwindsor. Photo credit: Jamie Dawson.

In our dark sky, there’s the chance you’ll see shooting stars too. These are the Perseids and these will be increasing each night until their peak on 11th/12th/13th August.  The Perseids tend to be very bright, so you can still expect a good percentage to overcome the moonlit glare.
In ancient Greek star lore, Perseus is the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Danaë. It is said that the Perseid shower commemorates the time when Zeus visited Danaë, the mother of Perseus, in a shower of gold.
