Broadwindsor Community Stores announced this morning that they are now allowing 3 customers at a time into the shop. They do have a one way system in operation. Please follow this without bumping into each other: the social distancing rules are there to protect everyone.

Witness Appeal: Broadwindsor Community Stores

Any witnesses to a vehicle, most probably a medium van turning around in front of shop and colliding with the canopy of the village shop are asked to please step forward.

The incident happened on the morning of Wednesday 2^nd June. It is presumed that it happened before opening as the noise most certainly would have alerted staff and/or customers. Volunteer, Philip Coltart noticed the damage when coming in on duty. The vehicle involved cannot have escaped without damage to the rear of their vehicle as the 6×2 inch timber has been broken. Broadwindsor Community Stores to date, have found no witnesses to the incident.

Chris Edgerley, who will be reparing it in the next couple of weeks commented “It is going to be complex to fix without taking the whole structure down but that is my problem. I have done a temporary repair to pull the whole structure together.”

Happy St. David’s Day

The only Welsh saint to be canonized by the Western Catholic Church, the feast of St. David is celebrated on 1st March each year. Born on the Pembrokeshire cliffs into an aristocratic family, during a fierce storm approximately 1,500 yars ago, his date of birth is unknown but he died on 1st March 589 AD at 90-100 yrs old. He became a monk at a young age and is said to have founded a monastery close to where he was born. This area is now known as St Davids. Two pilgrimages to St David’s Cathedral are said to be akin to one pilgrimage to Rome. Allegedly, his last words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – Do the little things.

The Feast of St. David is an opportunity to celebrate their traditional foods:

Welsh Rarebit – a hot cheese-based sauce served over slices of toasted bread.
Taffies – gingerbread shaped like a Welshman on a goat!
Cawl – an undefined soup usually containing lamb and leeks.
Welsh cakes – flatbreads sweetened with sugar & dried fruit, baked on a griddle. Sometimes seen on sale in Broadwindsor Community Stores too!

Bara Brith – a rich fruit tea loaf.

It used to be that the children of Wales were given a half day holiday on St David’s Day. It’s not a national holiday in the UK and in 2007, former PM Tony Blair rejected calls for it to become a public holiday.

The wild daffodil is thought to have been a symbol of Wales since the 19th century. as a replacement for the humble leek which was introduced by the Romans during their invasion. It is interesting that the Welsh word for Leek (Cennin) and Daffodil (Cennin Pedr) are very similar. A symbol of spring and symbolising new beginnings and rebirth, daffodils are a positive, life-affirming symbol, with a bright and joyful yellow colour. Daffodils are strong, resilient flowers that pop up year after year.

The dragon appeared on the battle flags of various British soldiers on their way to Rome in the 4th century. It was later adopted by 5th century Welsh kings who were keen to show their authority following the Roman withdrawal.

The Flag of Saint David has been used as a flag representing Wales (as an alternative to the Red Dragon flag), in the same sense that the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrewand Saint Patrick are used to represent England, Scotland and Ireland (of which they are respectively patron saints). It is also similar to the arms of the Diocese of St David’s.

Broadwindsor Community Stores can now offer their lovely pasties, pastries & pain au chocolat on their online shop. Buy and collect frozen and bake at home ready for your breakfast or lunch.

Monday – last day to order your groceries online.
Tuesday – Fresh produce is ordered for you.
Wednesday – You collect it at a time that’s convenient to you.

Note: All collections are now from the Comrades Hall, except a 4pm collection from the shop reserved for working customers who cannot get to the hall before 1pm.

As more people are using the service, to provide a safer environment and to maintain a steady flow of customers, collection slots are at fifteen minute intervals starting at 11:30am and finishing at 1pm.

Please pick up from the side door where they will hand over your order at the entrance. Some customers’ orders are quite large and they will need to take several bags to their car, so please can all customers wait until the previous customer has finished their collection before entering the porch by the side entrance. Please wait in the doorway rather than go into the hall while they get your order ready.

Our thanks to all the team who have not only maintained this essential village service since the first Lockdown, almost a year a go – they have improved upon it!

Collecting From Broadwindsor Community Stores

A message from the three wonderful ladies who organise our village shop’s Click and Collect service:

“As we go into lockdown again, we want to reassure you that we are continuing to do our best to ensure our customers, staff and volunteers are safe, as we have done at Broadwindsor Community Stores since March 2020.

We will continue to offer our Wednesday Click & Collect service via broadwindsorcommunitystores.co.uk.

However, all collections will now be from Comrades Hall, except a 4pm collection from the shop reserved for working customers who cannot get to the hall before 1pm.

We anticipate that more people will want to use the service, so to provide a safer environment and to maintain a steady flow of customers, collection slots will be at fifteen minute intervals starting at 11:30am and finishing at 1pm.

Please pick up from the side door where we will hand over your order at the entrance. Some customers’ orders are quite large and they will need to take several bags to their car, so can we please ask all customers to wait until the previous customer has finished their collection before entering the porch by the side entrance. May we also ask you to wait in the doorway rather than come into the hall while we get your order ready?

As the Click & Collect service is as safe as can be and meets the needs of the vast majority of people we are not offering a full delivery service as we did in the Spring. However, if you are clinically vulnerable and have been advised to stay in your home, please get in touch with us so we can arrange a delivery. Christmas Opening Hours At Broadwindsor Community Stores

Our wonderful village shop will be closed only on Christmas Day. The staff and volunteers have been busy today preparing orders of fresh meat and veg to be collected tomorrow. We are exceptionally lucky to have all the volunteers that do their 2 hour shift to keep our shop open – they are always looking for more – why not volunteer* in 2021?

Christmas Eve: 7.30am – 4pm
Closed on Christmas Day
Boxing Day: 10am – 12 noon
Sunday 27th: 8am – 12 noon
Monday 28th: 7.30am – 6pm
Tuesday 29th: 7.30am – 6pm
Wednesday 30th:7.30am – 6pm
New Year’s Eve: 7.30pm – 4pm
New Year’s Day: 10am – 12 noon
Saturday 2nd: 7.30am – 6pm

The shop then resumes normal hours.

You can be reassured that all the necessary measures are in place to keep you Covid-19 safe in the shop environment. There is also a panic alarm fitted to ensure your safety.

Haven’t helped in the shop before? Not confident in operating the till or debit card machines? This is NOT a problem. Full training is given and you will always have a trained co-worker alongside you.

They’ve remained open every day throughout the year and throughout Lockdown, supporting our community and delivering to those isolated and/or vulnerable. And . . . the workers are volunteers!
