Dorset Falconry Park Features On Countryfile

Last Sunday, 12th June, BBC’s Countryfile featured an excellent interview with Martin Ballam of Xtreme Falconry at Dorset Falconry Park which they visited at the end of last month.

Martin discusses the plight and controversy regarding the White Tailed Sea Eagle – something which he has offered to educate West Dorset MP Chris Loder on more than one occasion since his comments in February 2022 (read more HERE).

Father’s Day – Sunday, 19th June

Honouring fathers, grandfathers and all things paternal, Father’s Day has been celebrated on the third Sunday in June since 1910.

Founded by the daughter of a U.S. Civil War Army veteran in 1910, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Then in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year. The U.K. follows this observation.

A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least 1508 and is usually celebrated on March 19th, recognised as the feast day of Saint Joseph.

In countries, including Spain and Portugal, Father’s Day is observed on 8th August.

Germany marks Father’s Day on Ascension Day in May or June, 40 days after Easter, while Australia and New Zealand commemorate it on the first Sunday in September.

In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on 5th December, the birthday of their late king who was considered the ‘Father of the Nation‘.

Russia continues a tradition from the Soviet Union of celebrating “Man’s Day” on ‘Defender of the Fatherland Day’ on 23rd February, which marks the first mass draft into the Red Army.

In addition to Father’s Day, International Men’s Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19th (on a Saturday this year) in honour of both men and boys.

Platinum Jubilee 2022 #3 Childrens’ Parade & Poetry

Apologies for the delay, but here are some photographs from the Childrens’ Jubilee Parade and their poems which they wrote for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this month, after workshops with resident poet, Peter Roe. All were on display in the Comrades Hall over the weekend.

Platinum Jubilee 2022 #2 Beacon Lighting Ceremony

The Beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday, 2nd June began with the music of a Highland piper (recorded) then this performance from Tilly Jardine on her bugle:


This was followed by the debut performance of the Broadwindsor Platinum Jubilee Choir (no recording as yet).

 

Then it was time for Pip Cadwell to light the beacon:

Motor Cycling Club 120th Anniversary Course Through Common Water Lane

The Motor Cycling Club (MCC)’s 120th Anniversary Dick Peachey Three Day Trial, named to honour their former Chairman Dick Peachey who died earlier this year, sees around 100 classic bikes and cars tackle a 530-mile course including on technical off-road trials sections.

It starts in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on Friday, 24th June and go to Exeter and back AND includes Common Water Lane. The first cars are anticipated from 11.40am on Friday, 24th for approximately 3 hours maximum. Residents of Common Water Lane have been informed.

The Motor Cycling Club is one of the oldest in the world. At the turn of the 20th Century, a small handful of automotive pioneers established the Club with one mission in mind. To test themselves and their machinery by trekking along the unmade and unlit roads and hills between London and Edinburgh and back. The long distance Classic reliability trial was born.

The Club remains the only one that caters for such events in modern times, and takes much pride in this fact. Over 120 years of competition to date and their events are still capable of testing drivers and riders along with their machinery. These days, those unsurfaced hills have become synonymous with the Club and it’s trials, whether they’re in the Peaks or the South West.

There will be a whole range of bikes, side cars and 2 wheel drive cars on standard road tyres, from pre-war to homemade and everything inbetween, so if you’d like to watch, there should be something interesting to see passing by!

Full Strawberry Moon – 14th June

Today’s Full Moon is also known as the Strawberry Moon, being the time of year for ripening strawberries.

There are many different names for the Full Moons experienced each year. Usually they’re not based on a colour, but on a common activity that takes place that time of year:

  • Blooming Moon is indicative of the flowering season.
  • Green Corn Moon and Hoer Moon suggest that it’s time to tend to young crops.
  • Birth Moon, referring to the time when certain animals are born in their region.
  • Egg Laying Moon and Hatching Moon are Cree terms that also hint at a time of many animal babies.
  • Honey Moon
  • Mead Moon

June was traditionally the month for marriages – it is even named after the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Following marriage comes the “honeymoon,” which give may give credence to one of this Full Moon’s names.

This is the second Supermoon of the year – Supermoons are often known to appear slightly larger than a normal Full Moon, up to 30% brighter and 17% larger, but in reality it seem to appear much the same, observed as a bright orb casting a slight golden tint.

The Summer Solstice is next Tuesday, 21st June.

Meet Mike Moles – New Manager At Broadwindsor Community Stores

Mike’s not there full time yet as he has a moral obligation to the community he is leaving but will be there in the afternoons this week being shown ‘the ropes’ by both Margaret and Jane who have held the fort fantastically & remarkably since Kevin left.

Village Shop Seeks Loan From BGPC To Purchase The Freehold Of Premises

Stewart Urry, Secretary of Broadwindsor and District Community Enterprise (BADCE) informed members this week of the committee’s intention to seek a loan from Broadwindsor Group Parish Council at their meeting on Monday, 13th June.

APPLICATION TO BGPC FOR A LOAN FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE FREEHOLD OF THE SHOP PREMISES

  1. BADCE is registered under the Co – Operative and Community Benefits Societies Act 2014, number 31629R. Annual Returns, available on line, are filed with the Financial Conduct Authority. BADCE carries on business as a convenience store for the benefit of Broadwindsor village and the nearby district. BADCE has 330 members, on a one vote per member basis. The shop is an invaluable resource to the district, as has particularly been shown in the recent pandemic, and is widely supported by its members, volunteer assistants and the general public, and also by the local Council.

  2. BADCE was established in early 2013 after public fundraising of some £30,000. From its inception it has reported an annual financial surplus, modest by reference to turnover, but grocery is a low margin trade, and the shop is not in business to maximise profits. At 31 December 2021, its accounts show total members’ funds of £64,016, represented by some £45,000 in cash and bank deposits, with the balance invested in the shop business.

  3. BADCE occupies its premises at The Old Telephone Exchange (’TOTE’) in Drimpton Road, Broadwindsor under a lease agreement at a current annual rent of £4,000 per year, for a term expiring on 31 December 2022, with no security of tenure after that date. Relations with the landlord are good, but the risk is that circumstances may change, and a lease renewal might not be offered in 2023, or at a later date. In any event the annual rent is likely to rise with inflation. The current location suits the shop very well, and there is presently no other comparable site for the shop in the village. Leased tenure restricts the shop from making any improvements to the building, or on the shop site, and this limits the future development of the shop.

  4. Following negotiations with the landlord a price has been agreed for the freehold at £75,000 plus vendor legal fees. The value of the TOTE building is in the region of £75,000/100,000 based on other transactions in identical buildings round the country; recently such a building was offered for sale in Yetminster, let at just over £4k per year, for £99.5k. The landlord values the building at some £100,000, but is generously willing to sell it to BADCE at the discounted price of £75k. A professional opinion has been taken supporting this purchase price.

  5. The BADCE Committee recommends the purchase of the freehold, as a one off opportunity to provide long term security for the shop, at a very reasonable price for a freehold. In order to fund the purchase, grant opportunities have been sought over the last six months, but without success. The main problem is that most current grant programmes are for new projects, which cannot readily access funding in any conventional way, and BADCE does not meet these criteria. Also, the Committee does not think it an opportune time to raise further funds from the members: there are considerable funds in the bank, partly from the original members’ fund raising, and also the local community has only recently raised money for the local pub.

  6. BADCE is therefore looking at loan finance. The total cost of the freehold, with fees and costs, might be some £80,000. BADCE currently has some £45k of cash, but needs to retain a trading buffer of some £15k, making say £30k available for the purchase, and so is looking for loan finance of some £50k, and has approached BGPC for assistance.

  7. BGPC may be able to access loan finance through the Public Works Loan Board, where currently published repayment terms for a £50k loan show capital and interest repayments on say a 30 year term of a fixed amount of under £3,000 per year, which is less than the current £4,000 annual rent paid by the shop, which is not fixed for the future. So the shop could readily afford this loan repayment cost.

  8. In respect of a loan, BADCE would grant BGPC security over the TOTE freehold property, which has a value materially higher than a £50k loan, so BGPC would have good capital security for its loan. BGPC would also have income security as the shop can readily afford the projected loan repayment costs out of its current trading results. BADCE would also offer to pay any incidental costs to BGPC of the loan assistance.
