Broadwindsor Fun Group’s A.G.M. – 2pm, Saturday 18th September

Dear Broadwindsor,

I write as the current chair of the Broadwindsor Fun Group to inform you that the Group’s AGM will be held in the Lewesden Room at Comrades Hall at 2pm on Saturday 18th September 2021. All are welcome and please spread the word, particularly to newer members of the community.

This meeting follows what I hope you will agree, was a successful and enjoyable fun event earlier this month. It was great to see so many people attending. Thank you for your support.

The AGM will include a short update on how the event went and some of the lessons learnt. This will include a financial statement.

Following this all of the positions on the committee will be open to anyone who wishes to stand. Please check with that person nominated that they are willing to stand before nominating them!

The committee will be seeking firm commitment from the community to support and carry out roles at future events. For example we need people to work on the bbq and bar at events. Indeed at this year’s event one person (who does it even live in the village) worked all day on the bbq, supported family members of a resident who also did not live in the area and another person who has only been in the village for a couple of years. This can’t be right.

There are many events being considered including a fireworks show in November. Sadly I will not be at this event but see it as a test whether the village will support and help.

As I say several events are now being considered but all of these need firm support by way of servers, cooks, setting up and clearing up etc. So do not be shy. There are many residents including some new arrivals and helping is a great way of integrating into the village.

I have been asked by numerous people whether I will seek re-election as Chair. This decision is not straight forward. I need to absent from the village several times in 2022. This year I have been supported by three others in the committee and if rumours are correct, at least two others have pledged support should I stay.  I also need some reassurance that the village will get behind events and work at them as necessary. Should such reassurance be given I would not shy from election. That said if anyone else wants to step into the breech…

Finally following what has been a terrible couple of years, I am of the mind that Broadwindsor contains a great many community minded and hard working residents and it is on that basis that we can enjoy many events and activities in the future.

I hope to see you at the AGM.

Adrian

Do You Have Yesterday’s Telegraph?

** Now sorted – thank you **
Broadwindsor Community Stores
have issued a plea to anyone who may have a copy of yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper.  If you have read and finished with your paper – please could you return your copy to the shop in order for them to give it to an elderly gentleman in the village who was unable to get his copy.
Most appreciated! Thank you.

Broadwindsor.org’s Editor Nominated For Award

Web Mistress & Editor of Broadwindsor.org’s website, Wendy Shields has received notice that she has been nominated in both the Digital Public Service Innovation of the Year & Digital Leader of the Year categories in the Digital Leaders 100 Awards 2021.

“This was most unexpected and I’m not even informed of who places the nominations!  It all sounds a bit corporate and grand for our wee village but I am really very pleased and am proud of the work I’ve done on the website so far.  The aim has always been to be a source providing as much up to date and accurate information as possible, promoting local businesses and capturing those memories of local history which may otherwise be lost.”

Please show your support and nominate by visiting: https://digileaders100.com/nominate

The Categories are:

  • Digital Public Service Innovation of the Year
  • Digital Leader of the Year

Nominations close on 10th September at 12 noon.

Broadwindsor Allotments – History Information Sought

Duncan Harris, a volunteer at Beaminster Museum is appealing to the older members of the parish… Do you remember?

“We have quite a lot of information about the 5 mills or works in Broadwindsor parish.  In addition we have some information on agriculture in the past and in particular the four water meadows that were in the parish.

At present we are investigating the allotments in each parish.  It would appear from a document that in 1825 Savidges Plot was purchased for £100 or £200, if my memory serves me correctly by the Parish Council for allotments.  Unfortunately Savidges Plot does not appear on the 1841 tithe map, nor do the Parish Council as owners or occupiers of any land.  It is thought that Savidges Plot may have belonged to the George Inn, but there is no documentary confirmation.  I wonder whether any of the older residents recollect allotments in Broadwindsor, or even whether some still exist today?”

– Duncan Harris

Duncan has been advised that the allotments do indeed exist – prizewinning in fact – and to contact the Parish Clerk but he would very much welcome any information parishoners may have to assist their research.

Please contact him by email: duncan.harris@cantab.net.

Turner Syndrome Support Society

This beautiful cake was raffled off at Saturday’s Fun Day event.  It was baked by Kate Staff whose daughter has a diagnosis of Turner syndrome. It was won by Kat Frampton.

The raffle’s ticket sales raised £110 all of which are going to the Turner Syndrome Support Society.

Turner syndrome is a rare genetic disorder affecting girls and women. The cause of Turner syndrome is a completely or partially missing X chromosome. Treatment for Turner syndrome may include hormone therapy.

Turner syndrome is named after Henry Turner who, in 1938, was one of the first doctors to report on the disorder in the medical literature.

The Turner Syndrome Support Society is a national charity caring for the needs of those with Turner Syndrome throughout the United Kingdom.

You can make a donation HERE.

Missing Yellow Crate

A large yellow crate, identical to the one in the photograph, is missing from Saturday’s Fun Day event.

The crate is one of three which were being used to cover electrical points in Bernards’ Place and were on loan to the Group.  The missing crate is also marked with the name ‘David Haines‘.   If someone has inadvertently picked it up for packing – please return it at your earliest convenience to Broadwindsor Community Stores or contact bwfunday20@gmail.com and collection will be arranged. It has to be returned a.s.a.p. else the Group may not be permitted to borrow such equipment in the future.

Thank you.

Full Moon – Sunday 22nd August

August’s Full Moon is on Sunday, 22nd and is known as the Sturgeon Moon.  This is because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.
For millennia, people across Europe, as well as the Native American tribes, named the months after features they associated with the Northern Hemisphere seasons, and many of these names are very similar or identical. The Sturgeon Moon is also referred to as:

  • Full Green Corn Moon, signalling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest.
  • Grain Moon,
  • Fruit Moon,
  • Barley Moon,
  • Wheat Cut Moon
  • Blueberry Moon.
