Save the White Lion NEWS Update #2

A summary of the latest minutes from the Steering Group’s meeting on 18th October, provided by Margery Hookings:

Work is going on behind the scenes to re-open the White Lion at Broadwindsor as a Community Pub. The community needs to raise at least £30,000 to make it happen.

Save the White Lion, summary of meeting 18/10/21

Community Benefit Society application

Slight delay while the Plunkett Foundation, which is advising us, talks to the Financial Conduct Authority about the legality of the set-up before we can go to the community with a share offer. We should know within three weeks.

Grants and fundraising –

Broadwindsor Group Parish Council has agreed a grant of £5,400 which represents three years’ grant all in one go. A great deal of work has been carried out to identify suitable grant-making bodies. It is difficult to pursue these while we await confirmation of the legal set-up of the organisation running the pub. Comrades Arms had made a profit of £700 in the first two weeks. People within the local community are working on fundraising events in the village.

Manager –

There have been several expressions of interest so far. Discussions and advertising ongoing.

Business plan –

An abridged version has been amended to include skill sets and this will be used in grant applications. A three-year cash flow will be put into the plan. Firm costings for the refurb will need to be included in the plan.

Refurbishment –

A great deal of time and research has been put into structural work and furnishing needed before the pub can reopen. This has to be costed to put into the business plan. Volunteers have offered help with structural work. The Steering Group was unanimous on the proposed physical layout of the pub and furnishings as per the plan drafted in conjunction with the brewery. More details will be unveiled when the community is approached to buy shares.

The next meeting is due to be held on 1 November.

Grants Up to £1,000 For College Studies Available

The Dorset Community Foundation’s Bursary Scheme awards grants of up to £1,000 to help students follow their dream career. Applications are now open.

Last year Dorset Community Foundation’s Bursary Scheme awarded more than £37,000 to support 72 students from the county who face financial disadvantage, additional issues such as those with disabled parents, those with Special Educational Needs or those not living with parents or guardians.

The total also includes disadvantaged students studying STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) at Bournemouth and Poole or Brockenhurst College funded by the community foundation’s Superior STEM Bursary Fund.

The grants can be used to cover the cost of travel to college, equipment, tools or clothing, study trips, laptops or meals. Grants Manager, Ellie Maguire said: “This isn’t an exhaustive list and students with other requirements for their course should contact us.”

Applicants must be 16yrs to 25yrs, attending a vocational course, and be enrolled at any of the following:

  • Bournemouth and Poole College,
  • Kingston Maurward College,
  • Brockenhurst College,
  • Weymouth College,
  • Yeovil College or
  • Wiltshire College’s Salisbury Campus.

Students should apply direct to their college for financial support before applying to DCF, although they may receive funds from both sources if needed.

Applications for bursaries to be paid in November are open until October 8th.
Further rounds of funding are also available.

Funding Available From The People’s Postcode Lottery

The People’s Postcode Lottery is a not-for-commercial-gain organisation owned by Dutch organisation, Novamedia, the creators of the Postcode Lottery brand.

They have launched the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust in response to the current pandemic. In 2020 Postcode Neighbourhood Trust will provide funding in Great Britain to organisations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic under the following themes: supporting your organisation’s resilience & adapting/expanding services to meet new challenges. Applications opened on the 4th August 2020 for community groups and good causes across Great Britain. They expect to distribute over 4 million pounds across the country.

Postcode Innovation TrustPostcode Innovation Trust: the Postcode Innovation Trust operates two programmes:

Social Investment Programme 
This programme provides blended finance (50% grant, 50% loan) to asset locked social enterprises looking to achieve impact in the areas of: social inclusion, community development or environmental impact.

Social Enterprise Support Programme 
This programme provides grant funding for charities who support social enterprises by delivering programmes including enterprise training, capacity support, accelerators, incubators, mentoring and peer support.

The Blackdown Educational Trust

The Blackdown Trust is a village based fund set up over 50 years ago to contribute towards the expense of Further Education for individual local students.

The amount available depends on the number of applicants.  You are eligible to apply if:

  • you live in Broadwindsor, Burstock, Blackdown or Thorncombe.
  • you have attended local schools.
  • you are leaving school to further your education; you have qualified for and have been accepted as a student on a recognised course at university/college/college or apprenticeship/agricultural college.

The Safer Dorset Fund

Dorset Police & Crime CommissionerImportant work is performed by a whole range of organisations, from the public, community, voluntary and private sectors, which deliver services that aim to address crime and community safety issues for the benefit of our communities in Dorset. The Police Crime Commissioner (PCC) is able to add value to this delivery by working in partnership with these organisations in order to identify needs, consider the best options to address those needs and then to commission or co-commission services where appropriate, to achieve successful outcomes.
The resources available to the PCC to commission these services are generally accessed through a variety of government funding streams. The sum of these funding streams constitutes the Safer Dorset Fund (SDF).

Their approach to funding:
Their approach to commissioning focuses upon the priorities that have been identified and published within the Police and Crime Plan.
The priorities have been determined through analysis of key information at both a local and a national level; together with consultation with Dorset Police, with other partner organisations and with members of the public.

How to apply for funding:
Application for funding through the SDF is made via both the Priority Commissioning Scheme and the Community Grant Scheme. In addition, the PCC influences national commissioning of services for victims, witnesses and offenders, in support of local needs and outcomes.

COVID-19 Grant Scheme:
The Safer Dorset Fund Covid-19 Grant is a financial resource provided by the Police & Crime Commissioner to support charities during this health crisis.  Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are available.

Community Grant Scheme:
The Community Grant Scheme is designed primarily for voluntary and community sector applications which meet at least one of the Police and Crime Plan priorities.  Grants of between £100 and £3,000 are available.

Monitoring of Project Outcomes:
Monitoring the outcomes of activities is overseen by key partnerships that they work closely with, in order to evaluate success and inform future commissioning decisions.
