Monensin Toxicity In Dogs

Charter Veterinary Surgeons have issued this warning:

MONENSIN TOXICITY IN DOGS

A warning from one of our Vets.

Last weekend we said good bye to Inca, our 3 year old ‘dog of a lifetime’ Labrador (photographed). Out on a local walk on a well trodden footpath (one we’ve walked for 10 years +) she picked up a kexxtone bolus containing monensin. Even though we managed to get it off her within seconds of her picking it up, she started vomiting and seizuring after 20 minutes of ingesting the toxin. After a long 48 hours of intensive treatment and the worst weekend of my life, she lost her battle and ended up passing away.

Please see photo of the boluses below. A kexxtone bolus is administered to a cow to release monensin in order to avoid certain metabolic diseases and to increase milk yield.

The boluses are meant to stay in the cows stomach for the duration of it’s life. Unfortunately some cows regurgitate the boluses so they end up on farmland. This leaves them open to dogs to pick them up.

We have since been to the farmer, who we know, to discuss what happened. We are not blaming the farmer as it was pure bad luck. But we want to prevent it happening to anyone else in the future. The farmer had NO clue that monensin is toxic to dogs, horses, wildlife etc. We have since asked our local farming community and had similar responses.

So here’s my advice:

FARMERS: please be aware of the toxic effects these can have on dogs, horses and wildlife. If using them then PLEASE keep an eye out for regurgitated ones or have warning signs up on footpaths where they might be present. Even if the cows are housed 24/7, the regurgitated boluses can end up being spread in the muck on fields. You also need to be aware of the risks for your own farm dogs so make sure they were well out of their reach.

DOG WALKERS: if walking on footpaths that go through farmland please keep an eye out for these. They’re not very commonly found but the consequences on your beloved pet are not worth the risk. If you see your dog with one then get them to drop it as soon as you can and take them to your vet IMMEDIATELY.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are also contacting the drug company to try and get more obvious warnings on the packaging and the things themselves. Although it breaks my heart to have to write this and nothing will ever prepare you for the sudden loss of such a huge part of your life, if we can stop it from happening to any other dogs in the future then it’ll help.”

Please feel free to share this post to pass on the message to others.

The Rev. Frederick Vaughan [1829-1911]

This is the Rev. Frederick Vaughan who lived in Broadwindsor 1869 – 1884.
His great, great granddaughter is keen for more information.

In Broadwindsor, Frederick had charge of a group of three chapels.  Preaching three times and walking six miles each Sunday.  His evenings through the week were occupied with services in each place, bands of hope and singing classes.  He became Secretary of Dorset Southern Counties Temperance Association and organised Temperance missions in all the chief towns of Dorset and the three bordering counties.  He travelled all over the district organising Temperance societies and missions. Each year he trained a choir of five hundred voices to sing in the annual fete.

You can read all about him & others on the new Notable Residents page on the website. Click HERE.

If you have any information at all that may help his ancestral family – please contact info@broadwindsor.org in the first instance . Thank you.

Land South Of Fullers Development

The detailed planning shown was published on this website on 19th February (You can read the post HERE).  There remains some confusion as what the planning application WD/D/21/000123 is for.

The developers have already outlined planning permission to build 22 houses and this has been approved. Application WD/D/21/000123 is concerned with the layout, landscaping and possibly the most important – what traffic calming measures will be in place on the Salway Ash road?

Councillor David Leader commented: “In essence we can’t stop the houses from being built but we can potentially influence the layout, design, traffic calming and landscaping. Residents can make their own comments and the Parish Council will submit their collective view based on residents’ opinions and their own.
Please be aware that there are two applications for the land south of Fullers, one is the original outline application which has been passed. The one we need to consider is WD/D/21/000123.
Cllr. Dorothy Rowe and I are collating residents’ views and have spoken to many. I would urge residents to contact us with their views and to make their comments on the Dorset Planning website. We don’t have long to do this.

The matter is an item on the Parish Council’s agenda for their meeting on Monday 8th March.
You can comment, support or object on this development online HERE until 22nd March 2021. The comment box they give you has a 1000 character limit.  (If you wish to enter more than 1,000 characters, please type your response in a text document and add it as an attachment.)

Wall At Bernards’ Place Almost Complete

As the wall in Bernards’ Place nears completion, Chris Edgerly had some help at the weekend from Matthew and James Pickering of Broadwindsor. The boys each placed an ammonite into the wall as part of the montage Chris has created from the smaller ammonites donated.
Photo: Luke Pickering
The ammonite montage itself is now complete and Chris hopes to complete the whole wall by the end of this week, fair weather permitting.

Matthew & James
’ enthusiasm and involvement prompted a memory for Chris – he recalled from a young age when he was led up a ladder by a bricklayer to cement and lay his first brick. We hope that Matthew and James enjoy their memory and showing their friends with a sense of pride.

Well done all & Thank you.

Happy St. David’s Day

St.David WindowThe only Welsh saint to be canonized by the Western Catholic Church, the feast of St. David is celebrated on 1st March each year.  Born on the Pembrokeshire cliffs into an aristocratic family, during a fierce storm approximately 1,500 yars ago, his date of birth is unknown but he died on 1st March 589 AD at 90-100 yrs old. He became a monk at a young age and is said to have founded a monastery close to where he was born. This area is now known as St Davids. Two pilgrimages to St David’s Cathedral are said to be akin to one pilgrimage to Rome. Allegedly, his last words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – Do the little things.

The Feast of St. David is an opportunity to celebrate their traditional foods:

  • Welsh Rarebit – a hot cheese-based sauce served over slices of toasted bread.
  • Taffies – gingerbread shaped like a Welshman on a goat!
  • Cawl – an undefined soup usually containing lamb and leeks.
  • Welsh cakes – flatbreads sweetened with sugar & dried fruit, baked on a griddle.  Sometimes seen on sale in Broadwindsor Community Stores too!
  • Welsh lamb.
  • Bara Britha rich fruit tea loaf.

It used to be that the children of Wales were given a half day holiday on St David’s Day. It’s not a national holiday in the UK and in 2007, former PM Tony Blair rejected calls for it to become a public holiday.

DaffodilsThe wild daffodil is thought to have been a symbol of Wales since the 19th century. as a replacement for the humble leek which was introduced by the Romans during their invasion. It is interesting that the Welsh word for Leek (Cennin) and Daffodil (Cennin Pedr) are very similar.  A symbol of spring and symbolising new beginnings and rebirth, daffodils are a positive, life-affirming symbol, with a bright and joyful yellow colour. Daffodils are strong, resilient flowers that pop up year after year.

Welsh flag - DragonThe dragon appeared on the battle flags of various British soldiers on their way to Rome in the 4th century. It was later adopted by 5th century Welsh kings who were keen to show their authority following the Roman withdrawal.

Welsh Flag - St. DavidThe Flag of Saint David has been used as a flag representing Wales (as an alternative to the Red Dragon flag), in the same sense that the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrewand Saint Patrick are used to represent England, Scotland and Ireland (of which they are respectively patron saints). It is also similar to the arms of the Diocese of St David’s.

There will be extra celebrations this year as Wales won the Triple Crown with victory over England in a dramatic Six Nations rugby match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday afternoon.#Broadwindsor,#Burstock,#Blackdown,#Drimpton,#Hursey,#Kittwhistle,#Seaborough,#WestDorset,#Village,#StDavidsDay,#Wales,#Tradition,#Daffodil,#Leek,#Food,#TripleCrown,#BroadwindsorCommunityStores,#Flags,#2021,#BeSafe,#StaySafe

World Book Day – 4th March

The 24th World Book Day is on Thursday 4th March 2021. It is the annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the joy of reading, particularly children.

At Broadwindsor school, as with the majority of schools in the country, children are usually invited to dress up as their favourite literary character on the day.

Local children are encouraged to visit the village’s Telephone Box Book Exchange in the Square on Thursday too!

This year’s World Book Day theme is ‘share a story’. As we are still under Lockdown, you can encourage your children to share a story with the people they live with. These could extend to including Grandparents or other family members to read stories over a video chat like Zoom or Facetime; setting aside a Family Reading Time when everyone at home all read their own books or magazines; building a cosy reading den with cushions in a corner, or a sheet draped over chairs to make a tent; read a story or chapter and then perhaps act it out together.

Sponsored by National Book Tokens, in partnership with schools all over the country, over 15 million £1 World Book Day Book tokens are distributed to children and young people (that’s almost one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland) every year on World Book Day.  Their mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

  • View 2021’s £1 Books HERE.

Founded by Baroness Gail Rebuck, World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.
