The End Of Mow-Vember…

The campaign Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. You can donate HERE.

At last Friday’s Open Mic night in the White Lion, resident poet, Peter Roe recited his poem ‘Folliculaphillia‘ to much merriment and mirth…

Folliculaphillia

Last year in Mow-Vember my partner for a joke…
Said grow a moustache like that Wolverine bloke
I said to my girl “my dear won’t that tickle ya?”
She said “I don’t mind, I have Folliculaphillia…”

Folliculaphillia… if you should care
It means she’s a woman and she likes facial hair
But a Wolverines ‘tache can’t be grown in just one day
So I tried different styles as it grew on the way

I tried a Chaplin, a Chevron and a Painter’s Brush
A Kaiser, a Dali, a Lampshade and a Walrus
A Fu Manchu, Frank Zappa and Asterix The Gaul
An Albert Einstein, a Hugo… I tried them all

In films, cartoons and games ‘taches steal the show
Captain Haddock, Captain Hook, Luigi and Mario
For some men though proper lip rugs are a mystery
Because they are suffering from mustachular dystrophy

But the Wolverines sideburns, these bits on the side…
Wouldn’t grow on my cheeks, believe me I tried…
and I think it’s too late for these muscles to grow…
and just look at my fingers my nails hardly show!

So a cautionary tale to all of you folks out there…
you can’t become The Wolverine by just growing facial hair
And the reason for this… I think that I found…
Is that Man Makes Moustache not the other way round!

Movember first started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 when two friends (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) talked 30 of  their friends into growing a ‘Mo’ (moustache). They had been inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer and then including men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. You can donate HERE.

Farewell Simon Emmerson

Broadwindsor’s Comrades Hall was full to capacity on Thursday afternoon as family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Simon Emmerson who died peacefully on 13th March 2023.

The ceremony at Yeovil crematorium had been full to capacity also. Led by Celebrant Philip Carr-Gomm, the Order of Ceremony was full of beautiful words and music:

After an exceptional and moving ceremony, family and friends gathered at the Comrades Hall.  Simon’s brother Paul invited those present to share their stories of their encounters with Simon… Without any hesitation, Simon’s mother, Marcia Last – now in her 90’s – was the first to speak and we thank Marcia and the family for their permission to share this amateur recording…


Paul also gave credit and thanks to Simon’s Obituary, published in The Guardian newspaper – Click HERE.

Throughout the afternoon celebrations continued and a video montage played on the big screen with much memorabilia, predominately shared by Karen, on tables around the Hall.  This included an exclusive book of photographs taken by local resident and photographer, Jamie Dawson which he had published in time to gift Simon shortly before he died.

Yesterday, the Afro Celt Sound System stated on social media, “Thank you Simon for leaving us with the immense magic and wisdom of your music. The New Album OVA (short for Ovate) and the Afro Celt Symbol) will be a continuation of the gift you have left us. We will tour and gig with you and Jo guiding us all the way. We love you and we miss you dearly.”

Map On Display In The Square

The illustrated map “The Place We Love” by Broadwindsor’s Megan Edwards is now on display in the village square.

Malcolm Heaver crafted an oak frame for the map and put it up with Andrew Hookings‘ help on Monday.

Led by Margery Hookings on behalf of Windrose Rural Media Trust, the project was funded by Dorset AONB, Dorset Council and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council.

Broadwindsor primary school also has a copy of the map which they are also planning to put up outside.

The Place I Love – Now On Film

James Harrison has now released his 7 minute video production of The Place I Love project. He still has lots of footage that didn’t make the final film which will be available a bit further down the line.

The Place I Love – This Saturday, 12th February 2-4pm

Broadwindsor’s The Place I Love project culminates in the unveiling of the village map at an event in Comrades Hall this Saturday from 2-4pm.

Local folk songs and field names have been collected as part of the project, which celebrates the local landscape and rural heritage.

A map showing field names around the village will be on display, along with photographs taken by Broadwindsor Girl Guides and a stand run by the village’s eco group, which has recently planted trees as part of the ‘Gurt Darzet Hedge’ project.

The programme for the afternoon will include a short introduction by villager Margery Hookings, who is leading the project on behalf of Windrose Rural Media Trust,  poetry by Broadwindsor resident Peter Roe and folk songs sung by Amanda Boyd, a member of the Windrose team.

The highlight will be the unveiling of the interpretative map of the village designed by artist Megan Edwards, whose family home looks out to Lewesdon Hill. The large, detailed map is a work of art in itself and will be installed in a central location in the village at a later date.

Tea, coffee and cakes are being supplied by and in aid of Broadwindsor WI. There will also be a raffle to help pay for the hall hire.

The afternoon’s events will be filmed by Windrose cameraman James Harrison and included in a short video about the project, the community and the local area.

The Place I Love project was launched on 16 October 2021 with an art exhibition and display of the 1840 parish tithe map. It is funded by Dorset AONB, Dorset Council and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council.

Megan’s lovely map will continue to be a lynch pin of The Place I Love, with a version made available online and planned seasonal updates.
