Funeral Arrangements For Paul Miller

The service for village resident Paul Miller will be held at Yeovil crematorium at 13.20 hrs. on Tuesday, 9th April.
Anyone who would like to come along and raise a glass in his memory, are welcome to join the family at The White Lion from 15.30 hrs. onwards.

On Friday 7th July, my Mum and I said goodbye to Dad at Yeovil Crematorium. Dad did not want a lot of fuss so it was just perfect the four of us being together.

It was dad’s wish though for any donations to be made to Weldmar Hospice, who looked after dad so brilliantly. They made him comfortable and nothing was too much trouble. And also the RNLI who he had had contact with during his volunteering role for the National Coast-watch Institution. I am providing links below as many of you have been asking what dad would have liked.

Dave Chumbley, 21/10/48 – 28/06/23

On Wednesday evening Dave sadly succumbed to pancreatic cancer having been diagnosed in December 2022. Joyce has shared the following:

“Dave loved Dorset and we were both very lucky to have found a lovely, welcoming community, which we became part of.

Throughout his life and wherever he lived, it was important for Dave to feel connected to and to be of service to people around him.

From working in the village shop when it started, to Parish Councillor, Chair of Governors at the village school, and Secretary for the Hall Committee to name a few.

On a wider scene he volunteered for the National Coastwatch Institute, an important part of the national search and rescue organisation. In this role he carried out regular watchkeeping duties.

On Friday 7, July, 08:45 at Yeovil Crematorium, Dave will take a short journey with Kay and Adam at his side, while one of his favourite songs by Eric Clapton, Layla, plays.

Dave did not want a big funeral, however, when you pass the mirror in the square, you may want to take a moment and think of our Dave Chumbley.

Dave was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all his family and lifelong friends, who are grieving at this time.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joyce, Adam & Kay, the extended family and Dave’s friends at this incredibly sad time.

Quarter Peal – 3.30pm, Wednesday, 12th April

The bells at St. John the Baptist church have not been heard for some considerable time. There are not enough ringers who are able to commit regularly, no tower captain or tower secretary and the bells themselves need some maintenance. However…

At approximately 3.30pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, 12th April (tomorrow) there will be a Quarter Peal in memory of Harold Jenkins who died peacefully on 14th January this year.

Harold was pivotal in keeping the bells of St John the Baptist Church, Broadwindsor, ringing for many years and the village owes him a great debt of gratitude. This Quarter Peal rung by an experienced band of the West Dorset Branch of SDGR (Salisbury Diocese Guild of Ringers) will take about 45 minutes and involves at least 1,250 changes (a ‘change’ is when two bells swap places in the order of ringing).

Harold was a very private man and we thank his widow, Margaret Jenkins for sharing this personal tribute:

Born Harold Thomas Fricker Jenkins on 16th January 1940 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

An extremely shy and private person, typical Capricorn:slow to anger but really mad if he was upset.

We met when we were 16, then married at 22 and immediately went on a posting with Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, to Brussels, at the Common Market Delegation, until four month’s later General De Gaulle said “Non” to UK entry and the Delegation closed.

Then came four years in Rangoon, Burma where Elizabeth and Nicholas were born. Following that came a two and a half year posting to New York at the British Delegation to the United Nations.

After a three year home posting, the children went to boarding school and we went to Bombay, India.

The next move was another visit to the USA. This time to Washington D.C. This was our favourite posting.

A four year home posting came next with Harold rising to the head of the East Africa Department. A part of this entailed visiting the refugee camps in Ethiopia. He was very glad to return home!

Dar es Salaam in Tanzania was the next post – not a favourite but it had its moments.

The last accompanied posting was to Kathmandu, Nepal, where he was Vice Consul and Head of Management with a staff of 50. Harold was involved with the aftermath of two air crashes that happened within six weeks of each other. It was a harrowing experience for both the Embassy staff and their wives.

Returning to the UK in 1994, we returned to Surrey before finding our present house. After a spell of immigration officer duties at Heathrow airport, Harold was asked to go to Kiev (as it was then), to Bucharest and then to Paris, each on special assignments. These three month assignments left Margaret at home to run the B&B, tend the garden and the allotment. A complaint about weeds was not well received!

Harold lived happily in Broadwindsor for twenty six and a half years, where he spent many hours ringing the church bells.

Broadwindsor’s Comrades Hall was full to capacity on Thursday afternoon as family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Simon Emmerson who died peacefully on 13th March 2023.

The ceremony at Yeovil crematorium had been full to capacity also. Led by Celebrant Philip Carr-Gomm, the Order of Ceremony was full of beautiful words and music:

After an exceptional and moving ceremony, family and friends gathered at the Comrades Hall. Simon’s brother Paul invited those present to share their stories of their encounters with Simon… Without any hesitation, Simon’s mother, Marcia Last – now in her 90’s – was the first to speak and we thank Marcia and the family for their permission to share this amateur recording…

Throughout the afternoon celebrations continued and a video montage played on the big screen with much memorabilia, predominately shared by Karen, on tables around the Hall. This included an exclusive book of photographs taken by local resident and photographer, Jamie Dawson which he had published in time to gift Simon shortly before he died.

Yesterday, the Afro Celt Sound System stated on social media, “Thank you Simon for leaving us with the immense magic and wisdom of your music. The New Album OVA (short for Ovate) and the Afro Celt Symbol) will be a continuation of the gift you have left us. We will tour and gig with you and Jo guiding us all the way. We love you and we miss you dearly.”

Funeral Arrangements For Simon Emmerson

Bandleader, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ whose interests ranged from rock, jazz, funk, soul and British folk to musical styles from Africa, Latin America and Asia; our village resident, our friend, Simon Emmerson‘s funeral will take place on Thursday, 6th April. Simon died peacefully on on Monday, 13th March.

‘There will be a live webcast shown in the Comrades Hall beginning at 12 noon. There is no dress code and those who wish to pay their respects to Simon are warmly welcome.

A pay bar will be available with all profits going to the White Lion community pub.

Tributes Pour In For Simon Emmerson

Village resident, exceptional musician and friend Simon Emmerson peacefully passed away at Weldmar’s Hospice on Monday, 13th March after living with cancer for several years.

The photograph, taken by Mark Bennett shows Simon on the right with Johny Kalsi (left) and N’Faly Kouyaté (middle) on stage just before a performance at WOMAD Festival.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media after his band, the Afro Celt Sound System publicly announced Simon‘s passing.:

“Simon touched the hearts of millions of people through his music and infinite wisdom. His legacy remains with the amazing people he bought together and they will continue to create the magic of his music with his guidance from above.

We would like to request that our fans, friends and fellow artists to respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time.

There will be plans of a tribute memorial concert later in the year and the details will be released on all platforms.

Thank you and Love and Light to you all.”
