Changes & Continuity At Broadwindsor Community Stores

Sadly, Mike Moles, the recently appointed manager at Broadwindsor Community Stores is unable to continue with the position and has tendered his resignation. Once again a new manager would have to be found…

Broadwindsor Community Stores has seen many changes over its almost ten years of trading but it has had one positive constant: Jane Sloman.

If you’re a regular, Jane will most likely greet you by your name, know what you like and if you ask her about anything in the shop, she most likely will have the answer. Talk to anyone who uses the village shop and they not only know Jane but think highly of her.

“I remember my interview like it was yesterday,’ she said. ‘The shop wasn’t open yet so Sue Williams, the first manager, and I sat on a couple of upside-down crates in the empty shop to do the interview.

‘And I got the job! Haven’t looked back since!”

After ten years of being a valuable shop assistant Jane has now accepted to take on the manager’s role, much to the shop committee’s delight and no doubt the whole community.

Andrew Hookings, Chairman of Broadwindsor Community Stores, said: “Jane has been with us since the shop opened in March 2013. She is very popular with volunteers and customers alike. The community knows Jane has had a tough time over the last couple of years, and she has thankfully come through. Jane richly deserves this opportunity.”

The shop committee is now looking for a part-time shop assistant to help Jane and work alongside her colleague, Margaret, as well as with the volunteers who together make the Broadwindsor Village Shop team. The part-time shop assistant role will be on a temporary basis whilst Jane settles into her new role with the aim of being a permanent position.

Mike’s not there full time yet as he has a moral obligation to the community he is leaving but will be there in the afternoons this week being shown ‘the ropes’ by both Margaret and Jane who have held the fort fantastically & remarkably since Kevin left.

The management committee meets regularly as work continues on the refurbishment of The White Lion so it can reopen as a community pub. The aim is to open the bar in time for Easter with the first food offering a week or two later.

At the last meeting on 11/3/22, the following was discussed:

Membership:

Certificates issued to all original committee members with a further 100 on the membership register still to be issued. Subsequent applications online will be incorporated into the register after 18th March when online applications close.

Customer workshop:

Village resident, Dorothy Rowe will be working with staff team and some volunteers from management committee.

Kitchen equipment:

Broadly aligned on what we need. There are a few different possible suppliers. Agreed to roll this over to next week.

Financial report:

We will ask Palmers for a current copy of the inventory and value.
Agreed to appoint a stock taker who will visit quarterly, provide analysis and help set prices.
Till system – appoint Electrotech at a cost of £22.50 per week. Data cable from bar to kitchen advisable.
Utilities – Paragon still working on a deal.
PaymentSent card machine will be integrated with till. CC charge – 0.95%. 0.37% for debit cards. Machine costs £15 per month.
Cellar training.
Meeting to decide on product range.

Palmers’ building responsibilities:

2 damp patches and broken slates. Workmen have replaced crash lock on back door, looked at damp patches and think may need scaffolding to fix, replaced tiles. Need to borrow a drone to take photo evidence of source of leak.

Trees on bank to be dealt with – 23rd and 24th March.

Refurbishment:

Detailed discussions around the back bar. Wall behind bar has been prepared, panelling ready for painting, old door to rear corridor has gone and been filled. Slabs for hearth and continuation of passageway have been sources, floor needs levelling, paint needs ordering.

Kate has cleaned some of the wall lights and fitted dimmable bulbs. Lights for over bar and six dining chairs have been bought. Two large farmhouse tables, two leather easy chairs and a coffee table have been donated. Furniture being stored in a local garage. Double plugs plus USBs in hand. New radiator ordered.

This weekend’s profits (and Tuesday, 15th) from the Comrades Arms are being donated to the Ukranian Humanitarian Appeal.

Friday night, the Comrades Arms raised £250.00.
Palmers Brewery also donated a barrel of IPA, soft drinks and bottled cider.
Saturday night, the Comrades Arms raised £98.50.

Due to an increase of positive Covid cases in the village, the committee have requested that those coming to this evening’s open viewing at The White Lion please wear a facemask in the interests of everybody’s safety.

The White Lion Open Evening – Wednesday, 23rd February

You are invited to an Open evening at The White Lion pub on Wednesday, 23rd February at 6pm – 8pm 🙂

Work has been going on all week since the tenancy was signed and you are being invited to see what progress has been made, what the plans are and to ask any questions of attending committee members.

Light refreshments will be served but no alcohol at this time.

The White Lion Saved NEWS UPDATE #8

Community pub campaigners at Broadwindsor signed the tenancy agreement for the White Lion Inn this week.

It took effect on Monday, 14th February and means that the Palmers Brewery-owned pub will become a community pub now that almost £50,000 has been raised through public donations and grant funding.

White Lion management committee chairman David Leader said: ‘Signing the agreement is such a significant milestone in our quest to open up the pub again for the community. It’s great news.’

He also announced that the new manager of the White Lion will be Kate Staff, who will be supported in running the pub by her daughters, Chloe and Louise.

‘We’re very pleased to appoint Kate and her daughters and look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.’

Kate, whose parents live locally and is well-known in the village for the imaginatively decorated cakes she creates for charity, said: ‘We are very excited to be part of this great project. We have family ties to Broadwindsor and have spent a considerable amount of time in the village over the last eight years and just love being here.
Our vision is to make The White Lion the hub of Broadwindsor, where people can come and feel at home, whether it be for food, drink or just a chat – everyone will be welcome.
As manager, I will be working alongside The White Lion Management Committee to make this a very successful venture. We look forward to making new friends and being a permanent part of this fantastic community.’

The pub, which is in the heart of the village, closed last summer after the tenants took over a pub in Somerset.
Unable to find a landlord to take The White Lion over, Palmers approached Broadwindsor Group Parish Council to see if the community would be interested in running it.
David Leader, who is the Parish Council’s vice-chairman, put together a group to explore the idea and then put it to the village at a public meeting.

A Crowdfunder appeal raised £34,760 with 337 supporters in 28 days. Further funding came from the parish council, Palmers, grants and other donations from the public. The money will be used to renovate the bar area, purchase kitchen equipment and supply working capital. It is hoped that the pub will be open in time for Easter.

The aim is to be modestly profitable but not for private profit. The White Lion will offer food and drink with an emphasis on local produce. We will strive to create a warm, friendly atmosphere and want the pub to be a hub for the community to visit, meet in and carry out as many community activities as possible.

Locals are being invited to an open evening at the pub on Wednesday 23rd February, from 6-8pm, to look around the bar and hear about the refurbishment plans for a revitalised White Lion.

Said David Leader: ‘The local community and people further afield have been so supportive of the project. The response has been incredible. Locals have wholeheartedly embraced the idea of a community pub. There is still lots of work to be done but we’re looking forward to opening the doors and being able to welcome people inside The White Lion once again.’
