Work Starts At Comrades Hall – Monday 10th January

Work begins on Monday, 10th January at the Comrades Hall to replace the central heating system. An air source heat pump system is being installed to replace the current old oil-fired system. In addition, they are installing 36 solar panels (PVs) across 3 roof surfaces.

The electricity generated will power the daytime use in the Hall, with the surplus directed to heating the water, and any remaining surplus after that sent to the National Grid. These installations will greatly reduce the carbon footprint of our village hall. This work is being funded largely thanks to grant funding awarded by The National Lottery Community Fund and Low Carbon Dorset.

Obviously there will be disruption to normal hall usage while this work is taking place, but please be assured that  Post Office services and Comrades Arms sessions will still take place as usual, and that any existing hall bookings will be able to go ahead.

#NoChildLeftBehind – Email Your MP

Incredible as it may sound, 4,165 children in West Dorset are trapped in poverty. That equates to 28%. That also doesn’t include the figures for 2021. No Child Left Behind have launched their campaign and to date, at the time of publishing, our local representative in Parliament, Conservative MP for Dorset, Chris Loder has NOT yet taken the following pledge:

As a member of Parliament, I pledge to do everything in my power so that no child is left behind in West Dorset:

  • I call for the development of a cross-Government strategy to eradicate the poverty faced by the 4.3 million children currently growing up trapped in poverty.
  • I will use my vote and voice in Parliament to try to stop an expected 730,000 more children being plunged into poverty by 2024.

We must value and invest in all our children, so they are supported to learn, succeed, and go on to have bright futures.

  • Cost: £12 for the year. Half of the subscription goes to the Church.
  • The Draw: takes place every 2nd Saturday of each month.
  • Prizes: 1st – £15.00; 2nd – £10.00; 3rd – £7.00 & 4th – £5.00
    In June & December: 1st – £50; 2nd, 3rd & 4th – £20.00 each.

Subscriptions can be left at Broadwindsor’s village shop. Please put in an envelope with your name and address and marked for ‘Robin‘. Cash or cheque.

Epiphany – Thursday, 6th January

Wednesday 5th is the day to take down and remove your Christmas decorations – the Twelfth Night.  According to the first tradition, those who fail to remember to remove their Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve must leave them untouched until Candlemas (2nd February), the second opportunity to remove them; failure to observe this custom is considered inauspicious. Other Christian countries historically remove them on Candlemas, the conclusion of Epiphanytide.

Other popular Epiphany customs include:

  • Chalking the Door: either on Twelfth Night (5th January), the twelfth day of Christmastide and eve of the feast of the Epiphany, or on Epiphany Day (6th January) itself, many Christians (including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and Roman Catholics, among others) write on their doors with chalk in a pattern such as 20 ✝ C ✝ M ✝ B ✝ 22, with the numbers referring “to the calendar year (20 and 22, for instance, for this year, 2022); the crosses stand for Christ; and the letters have a two-fold significance: C, M and B are the initials for the traditional names of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar), but they are also an abbreviation of the Latin blessing Christus mansionem benedicat, which means, May Christ bless this house.“

  • Epiphany singing: Star singers also known as Epiphany singers, or Star boys’ singing procession (England), are children and young people walking from house to house with a star on a rod and often wearing crowns and dressed in clothes to resemble the Three Magi.  Nowadays, it is not only boys who sing and they no longer go from house to house.
  • Consuming Three Kings Cake: now replaced with Christmas cake, it was frequently baked witho a bean hidden in one side and a pea hidden in the other; the man/lord finding the bean became King for the night, while the woman/lady finding the pea became the Queen – also known as the Lord or Lady of Misrule. Earlier, in the time of Shakespeare, there was only a Lord of Misrule, chosen by the hidden bean, reflected in Shakespeare’s play ‘Twelfth Night‘.
  • Winter swimming: Typically outdoors or in an unheated pool.

Watch Live Launch Of James Webb Telescope

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the famous Hubble telescope, is scheduled to launch today, Dec. 25, 2021.

The Webb space telescope will launch on an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana at 12.20pm GMT.

Festive Hamper Winner

Broadwindsor Fun Group’s Christmas Hamper raffle draw was held in the village shop at 3pm today in the presence of Chairman. Adrian Gray and Margeret Wing with ticket being selected by Martin Burt.

The winning ticket was a pink ticket number 660 purchased by Hursey residents, Janet and John Iveson.

The Festive Hamper has been delivered to the winners who understandably are very pleased and grateful.

Thanks to all those supporting the raffle which raised £204. This money will be used to support village events next year.
