Happy Lambs

This delightful ten second video was recorded inadvertently by 72 year old local farmer, Chris Sewell.
He was trying to take a photograph of his construction to bottle feed his five hungry lambs at once.  His wife Lesley had seen a similar structure on TV, feeding fawns and when she mentioned it to Chris he declared “I can make that!“.  Made from pallets and bits of guttering with holes drilled in to take 5 bottles – his lambs were very happy indeed 🙂

Full Moon – Wednesday 26th May

The Full Moon on Wednesday is known as the Flower Moon.  It will appear larger than usual as it is the second Supermoon* of the year (the first being April’s Pink Moon). On average, Supermoons are about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical Full Moon.

More favourable skies on and around 26th May are expected. Rain and showers are likely to clear away to the east, leaving drier and less windy conditions so one should get a good view of the biggest and brightest Supermoon of 2021.

There is a total lunar eclipse occuring but you need to be in Australia, parts of the western USA, western South America, or in South-East Asia to see it! However, there is a partial solar eclipse which will be visible from the UK on Thursday 10th June beginning at 10.04am.

Other names attributed to this Moon full of the promise of summer are:

  • Leaf Budding Moon
  • Planting Moon
  • Egg Laying Moon
  • Field Making Moon
  • Frog Moon
  • Moon Of The Shedding Ponies!

*Any full Moon (or new Moon) coming closer than 224,865 miles (361,885 km), as measured from the centres of the Earth and Moon, counts as a Supermoon in 2020, according to NASA.

One cannot talk of the moon without paying respect to Michael Collins who died at the end of last month at 90 years old.
Michael Collins took part in the first manned mission to land on the Moon in 1969. He remained in the Apollo 11 craft while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon’s surface. R.I.P.
A total of twelve people have walked on the Moon. Four of them are still living as of April 2021. Buzz Aldrin, now 91 years old, is the only surviving member of the 1969 mission.

Chris Loder MP Asks You To Sign His Petition

Chris Loder MP introduced his Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill in the House of Commons on 5th February 2020. On 29th April 2021, with the support of Lord Randall of Uxbridge, it became law: the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act 2021 (c. 21).
Click HERE to read the full legislation.

Working hard to keep Animal Welfare at the top of the Government’s agenda, he is promoting his new Animal Welfare Action Plan with the aim to:

✅ Recognise animals as sentient in law.
✅ Ban the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening.
✅ Bring in new laws to tackle puppy smuggling.
✅ Prohibit keeping primates as pets.

Banning live animal exports is his priority. He would like your help and support by adding your name and signing his petition.  Click HERE.#Broadwindsor,#Burstock,#Blackdown,#Hursey,#Kittwhistle,#Seaborough,#Drimpton,#Dorset,#BWGPC,#DorsetCouncil,#AnimalWelfareBill,#ChrisLoderMP,#BeKind,#AnimalsDeserveJustice,#ConservativeAnimalWelfareFoundation,#SocialDistancing,#BeSafe,#StaySafe

Mental Health Awareness Week: 10th -16th May 2021

Throughout this pandemic, millions have experienced a mental health problem, or seen a loved one struggle. The support required is not always adequate or sadly isn’t even out there. Mental health is not hidden anymore; it’s on the front pages; it’s on the political agenda; it’s spoken about by royalty. For millions of people, mental health is now something to be honest about – not ashamed of.

The week is an annual event when there is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving good mental health. The Mental Health Foundation started the event 21 years ago. Each year the Foundation continues to set the theme, organise and host the Week. The theme this year is Nature. Download their Nature Journal HERE to document how you feel before and after connecting with nature, and jot down anything interesting you notice while doing so!

Mental Health Awareness Week is open to everyone. It is all about starting conversations about mental health and the things in our daily lives that can affect it. This year as many people as possible – individuals, communities and governments – are being asked to think about connecting with nature and how nature can improve our mental health.  We are extremely fortunate where we live surrounded by the fields and woodland with the sea shore less than 10 miles away.

Lewesdon is obviously our closest hill, but there is Pilsden Pen right next to it and the 45 second video below by local photographer, James Dawson captures the stunning 360 view from Pilsden Pen on a recent windy day:

What a wonderful place we live!

There are lots of ways that you can get involved in Mental Health Awareness Week.  Notice nature and try to make a habit of connecting to the nature every day. Stop to listen to the birdsong, smell the freshly cut grass, take care of a house plant, notice any trees, flowers or animals nearby. Take a moment to appreciate these connections.

It has been stated –

  • Spending just 5 minutes in nature can boost your wellbeing.
  • Exercising in nature reduces blood pressure, heightens immunity and improves mood and self-esteem.
  • EnglishGardening.co.uk give 11 surprising health benefits from Gardening (see below).
  • Exeter University recommends spending 2 hours or more a week in nature to get the benefits for wellbeing – similar to the 5 a day of fruit and veg.
  • Open your curtains and let the sun shine in – you’ll get a boost of serotonin and Vitamin D which helps to improve mental health and wellbeing.

DorsetAONB.org invite you to Virtual Picnics in the parks! Click HERE.

The Mental Health Foundation invites people to share images/videos/or just sound recordings of the nature on your doorstep (and how this made you feel) on social media using #ConnectWithNature and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek hashtags.

RNLI Lyme Regis Thank Broadwindsor Community

Jacqui Sewell, on behalf of the Post Office Users Group, received a letter from the Chairman of the RNLI Supporters Group, Ken Lavery after taking collection of all the books donated to the Post Office Group at the Comrades Hall.

Villagers responded by appearing with bags, cardboard boxes and with car boots loaded full of books at the Post Office on Friday, 23rd April.  Even more books had been left for collection at the Telephone Box Book Exchange.  Thank you to Broadwindsor Community Stores for providing some much needed cardboard boxes! The books were collected by a Lyme Regis RNLI Supporter earlier this week on Tuesday.

The Bishops’ Kitchen – May 21

Ramsons are abundant at the moment. Here are 2 ways you can use the fresh leaves.

WILD GARLIC SOUP

1 onion chopped, 1tbsp oil, 250g new potatoes scrubbed & cubed, 125g wild garlic leaves washed & roughly chopped, 1litre veg stock, 1 squirt lemon juice, salt, mild chilli flakes.

Method:

In a large pan, sauté the onion in the oil for about ten minutes until soft. Add potatoes & quickly stir fry. Add the stock & simmer until the potatoes are just soft which will take about 15 minutes. Add the wild garlic, cover & simmer for a couple minutes until cooked but are still a vibrant green colour. Either serve chunky or liquidise to a smooth consistency. Check for seasoning & add a squirt of lemon juice. Decorate with the chilli flakes & serve hot.

WILD GARLIC CHICKEN KIEV

4 skinless chicken breasts, 100g wild garlic butter*, 50g plain flour (well-seasoned), 3 large eggs beaten, 125g panko or coarse dried breadcrumbs,  sunflower oil for frying, lemon wedge to serve.

Method:

Slice a deep pocket in each chicken breast. To do this insert a knife into the thickest end of the breast, keep pushing down along the breast about halfway into the fillet, being careful not to cut all the way through. Push your finger down into the hole to open it then stuff with 25g wild garlic butter making sure that it goes all the way to the pocket & fold into a parcel. Repeat the process with each chicken breast. Line up 3 shallow bowls & put flour on the first, beaten egg in second & breadcrumbs in third. Dredge each chicken breast in flour, then coat in egg & then breadcrumbs. Repeat the process then transfer to a plate & cover with cling film & place in fridge for 1 hour. When ready to eat heat oven to 180c/gas4.
Fill a pan 2cm deep in oil & set over medium –high heat. Once hot, fry the Kiev’s for 2-3mins each side until golden brown, then transfer to a baking tray & place in oven for 15mins or until cooked through. Serve with salad leaves & lemon wedge.

*WILD GARLIC BUTTER

250g pack unsalted butter softened, flaky sea salt to taste, 50g wild garlic leaves finely chopped

Mash the butter in a bowl with some sea salt start with ½ tsp then taste before adding more stir in wild garlic & roll into a log using baking parchment & chill. Can freeze for 1 month.
