New Bench At Cross Keys Donated By The Late Julie Steele

Today, Sunday 21st July would have been Julie Steele’s 59th birthday but sadly she left us, too soon, on 12th December 2022 following a long struggle with cancer and its treatments.

Julie sat on the old bench – 2022

Julie loved living in Broadwindsor and said this was where she said she belonged. Julie was enthusiastically involved with many activities in the village, of note was her role as President of the local W.I. group who described her as “a real leading light at our WI.

Julie frequently rested at the old bench at Cross Keys, which is across the road from the war memorial, en route to our village shop or visiting friends.
One of Julie’s final arrangements was to choose, purchase from her estate and donate a new bench which is now situated there.

Thank you to Martin Burt for putting it in place 🙂

Soon to be added is a memorial plaque which reads:

In Memory Of Julie Steele
1965 – 2022
A Much Loved Friend & Broadwindsor Resident
Greatly Missed, Never Forgotten

The next stage of the ‘facelift’ will happen once the wild flowers have died back. The grass will then be cut and a rose bed will be put in which, once in place, the W.I. have kindly agreed to maintain ❤

Julie was laid to rest in St. John the Baptist church graveyard
on 6th January 2023.

❤ Happy Heavenly Birthday Julie
& Thank You! ❤

W.I. President Julie Steele, 21.07.65 -12.12.22

Broadwindsor’s Women’s Institute announced on their website earlier today that their president, Julie Steele had died on Monday, 12th December. Their announcement read:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and former President Julie Steele, following a long struggle with cancer.  Julie was the most outgoing, fun, bubbly lady one would ever hope to meet, and a real leading light at our WI.  We are heartbroken.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family & friends at this very sad time.

Meet Jeremy Noble – Thursday 15th September

Everyone is invited to the W.I.’s meeting on 15th September when they will be delighted to welcome Jeremy Noble (pictured above) for a reading from his novel, Russian Ending at the Comrades Hall.

Our lovely village of Broadwindsor features significantly as a location in the book (even the WI gets a mention!), which is about an investment manager (Edward “Ned” Lumley) who gets involved with a Russian family whose money comes from the diamond industry.  Lies and deceit ensue, but from which side?

Following the reading, Jeremy will be happy to take your questions and sign any copies of the book you bring along.
A Russian Ending is available from bookshops and can be purchased on Amazon HERE.

There will be a small entry fee of £5 for non-members. All profits from the evening will go to a Ukrainian charity.

As you’d expect being hosted by the W.I., delicious refreshments will be available 🙂

W.I. Poppies

This beautiful display of poppies made by Broadwindsor’s W.I. next to the village shop will be dismantled this weekend.

The idea grew from the ladies of the W.I. wanting to observe Rememberance Day with a display of poppies for their garden.   They were made from the bottoms of plastic bottles that were cut, melted and painted red to looks like poppies.  A small group of them got together and made 103 in total to signify the end of World War 1.
John Staff kindly made the frame for the display.  Hopefully, residents of the village have enjoyed them as much as they enjoyed making them. 🙂

W.I. meetings are usually held at the Comrades’ Hall, Broadwindsor, DT8 3QP (normally upstairs in the Lewesdon Room), on the third Thursday of each month, normally starting at 7.30pm. Members begin to arrive around 7.15, and the meeting would normally finish about 9.30pm.

Joining Broadwindsor WI
Their membership year runs from January to January, and the usual membership fee is normally £44.00. However, due to Covid restrictions, the fee is half-price at present, £22. If you are not sure if the W.I. is for you, why not go along as a visitor free to one of their meetings?  Just contact them to let them know you are coming!  Email: broadwindsorwi@gmail.com
