Village Resident Launches Fund For Food Bank

Village resident Paul Davies witnessed something humbling this morning (Saturday 24th October). “In the checkout queue at Morrison’s behind a gent whose trolley was overloaded with packets of rice, bottles of Dolmio and cans of rice pudding. Nothing else. It went through at over £100. He paid with good cheer, wheeled through trolley to where they collect for the food bank and left the whole lot then walked out without any fuss. No “virtue signalling” You Sir, are a star. I hope you are a member of this site and see this- you clearly don’t want fuss but you should know how much that action means. MPs take note, be humbled and ashamed.”

“Inspired by the generosity of an anonymous gentleman in Morrisons, Bridport this morning and encouraged by the hundreds of positive responses on social media, I would like to see how much we as a community can raise to emulate the fabulous generosity of the unknown hero by raising as much as possible for the Cupboard Love Bridport food bank.
Please help if you can!!”

At the time of publishing – £135 of the £500 target has been raised 🙂

Remember To Decorate Your Windows With Pumpkin Drawings

Monday 26th – Friday 30th October 2020 is Half Term week. Keep yourself and children occupied and get involved to help produce a colourful display of Pumpkin drawings in your windows for the week leading up to Saturday 31st October around the parish.

As Trick or Treating is to be discouraged, go out on Hallowe’en and see how many Pumpkin drawings in windows you can spot!

🎃 If you do have a real pumpkin outside your door for Hallowe’en – please remember pumpkins are food, especially to lots of the wildlife! Deer, squirrels, raccoons, possums, badgers, mice, rats, chipmunks, birds, bugs and more. Sticking them outside somewhere where wildlife can access them but do not bleach your pumpkins to make them last longer – you can try using vinegar. 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water will work just as well. We really DO NOT want our wildlife eating bleached pumpkins!  🎃

Halloween SuncatchersOther cheerful ideas like these Hallowe’en Suncatchers by #playathomemama_g, black cardboard cut out spooky shapes or white draped cloth can all add atmosphere to your windows!
Have Fun! Be Spooky! Be Safe!

In 2020, Age Is Just A Number

Our whole world is of the same age! This random and remarkable fact remains unexplained by experts but it only occurs once every Millennium.

Your Age + The Year of your Birth = 2020

Try it out – it’s a thousand years until it next comes around.*

  • Edit – It works every year. Not every thousand years. It’s not a trick or a quirk of maths, it’s just how date of birth and age work. Your age is the time between your DOB and the current year. – Thank You Harry Neary.

Join in with Advent Windows

Last month Rev. Jo put out her idea for having Advent Windows for the month of December.  Beaminster Team Churches are now promoting the event.  Read everything you need to know HERE.

If you live in Drimpton or Broadwindsor please email Rev. Jo Neary, revneary@gmail.com to register your interest. If you live in another village then you will need to get a group of people together to organise your own event but please let her know if you are joining in so you can be included and publicised.

Please sign up for your carol by Friday 23rd October allowing time to fill in any gaps. Spread the idea far and wide as some more people need to be recruited.
On Monday 2nd November the list will be confirmed, giving everyone four weeks at least to prepare their window. If there are fewer than 24 houses taking part then the Advent trail will start later in the month so that the last window is still lit on day 24.

1st Mosterton Scout Group

A message from Group Scout Leader, Susanna Newall –

I recently read an article about people who make ‘apps’ for mobile phones, I-pads and other modern paraphernalia that apparently we all can’t do without.
The most successful ‘app’ builders aim their product very cleverly at their target audiences – not by extolling the virtues of what the app can do – but by how the app makes the user feel.
When I was asked to write about what we do in 1st Mosterton Scouts, I made a big long list of all the amazing activities that we do as a Group every week. After the second page of A4, I thought you’d all be a bit bored by the time you got to the bottom and then I remembered the article I read.
If I was an ‘app’ builder (and as much as part of me knows that would give me massive street cred. with my children, the other part is very relieved I’m not!) I would tell all the children that by joining Scouts at 1st Mosterton Scout Group – this is what you will feel and experience and learn:
Laughter, fear, bravery, awe, tiredness, reflection, curiosity, fright, confidence, concentration, camaraderie, independence, socialising, apprehension, close and long-lasting friendships, courage, tenacity, perseverance, enchantment, accomplishment, love, pride and empathy. Oh – and more laughter –much, much more laughter!
So as much as plate-spinning, light aircraft flying (really!) kayaking, cooking on an open fire, archery, bouldering, tightrope walking and hosting a local radio show won’t help a child pass the next level on a computer game, we can help equip a child with the other important life skills like those above.
We can help them get the most out of the world around them and have the belief in themselves so that they are happy children growing into happy young adults.
That’s what Scouting is all about and I am very proud to be part of such an amazing team of volunteer leaders and supporters at 1st Mosterton Scout Group who give their time freely to teach the children these skills.

We meet every Monday normally and are open to both boys and girls in three different sections:

Beavers: aged 5 ¾ to 8 years inclusive – normally meet 4.45pm to 6.00pm.
Please call Gill on 01308 868419

Cubs: aged 8 to 10 ½ years inclusive – normally meet 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
Please email Cathy on cathy.mostertoncubs@gmail.com

Scouts: aged 10 ½ to 14 years old inclusive – normally meet 7.30pm to 9.00pm.
Please email Chris at emmerson1@googlemail.com

In these current times, we need fresh air, friends and fun – come and join us in 1st Mosterton for all these!

Susanna Newall, Group Scout Leader. 1st Mosterton Scout Group.

Local Police Report

At Monday’s Group Parish Council meeting, PC Alex Bishop submitted a report giving much cause for concern and reiterates the necessity of staying alert.

  • Around the 8th September some building materials were stolen from the side of the road by a farm near Broadwindsor.  The remaining items were then moved to a shed, but then subsequently stolen from the shed a little while later.
  • Around the same time a quad bike was stolen from a premises in Drimpton.  The quad was parked on a driveway in view and not secured.  This is the fourth quad stolen from Bridport area over the last few months.
  • At some time between the 14th and 19th September, an isolated building at Broadwindsor Cricket Club was broken into and a mower and scarifier were stolen.
  • In the early hours of the 24th September, a person was seen on a gravel driveway in Seaborough.  When the resident opened the door they heard the person run off and a car drive away.
  • There was a report made on October 8th of a scam call from a person purporting to work for BT.  They attempted to get the recipient to grant them access to their iPad.  BT do not cold call and if there is any issue with your line, they would put it in writing.

PC Bishop stated “Please be vigilant with calls, especially cold calls, even if they say they work for a company such as BT.” PC Bishop had not yet been cleared to get back to face to face engagements at this time but reassured that he would let the relevant people know when he can start coming back to the Post Office/Coffee mornings.

More recently, Dorset Police say an ‘old-style’ cream coloured Mitsubishi was seen around the buildings at a farm in the Nettlecombe area near Bridport at 3.30am on Wednesday (October 14).

Dorset PoliceAs ever, please be vigilant and continue to report any suspicious activity to them on 101, or online at Dorset.Police.uk.

If you believe a crime is in progress, please call 999.

Dorset Police are conducting a survey: Your Dorset. Your Police. Your View. Hidden Specialisms which looks into how much you know about Dorset Police’s work to prevent vulnerability and hidden harm.  There are 14 questions.
