Local Scout Groups Need Adult Helpers

Scout Groups welcome boys and girls from the ages of 5 ¾ to 14 years old.  Lockdown has made everyone realise how important fun, activities and being part of a community is to us and to children. Both the local Scout groups that serve our parish are in need of Adult Helpers ready for when the groups restart.  Active help.  Committee help.  General help. Assistant Leaders.  All offers of help are appreciated.

The 1st Beaminster Scout Group:

Beaminster’s Groups meet:

  • Beavers: Age 6-8 on Mondays 5.30pm to 6.30pm
  • Cubs: Age 8-10½ on Mondays 6.30pm to 8.00pm
  • Scouts: Age 10½ – 14 on Mondays 6.30pm to 8.00pm

Are you, or someone you know, over 18 and wanting to give something back to our local young people by becoming a helper at the weekly sessions? Perhaps you are ready to take on some new adventures yourself!

The Ollerod Reopens For Takeaways

The award winning restaurant in Beaminster reopened its kitchen for takeaways last Sunday, 7th February having been closed for the month of January.

​The Ollerod will be open for takeaways every week on Tuesday & Saturday, 4pm-7.30pm
Please note that they are trialling opening on a Tuesday – if there isn’t enough demand then they will change days.​

For £50 per person, they offer an amazing 5 course Valentines Menu available on both Sat 13th and Sun 14th Feb. ** Be Quick as orders for this culinary event must be in by 12 noon today, Thursday, 10th February. **

Overnight Parking Restrictions & Road Closures Next Week

**The road closure on Chard Road, Drimpton will be lifted after 3.30 pm today but will be closed again on Monday 14 December between 9.30 and 3.30. The reason for the extra day is due to engineering difficulties with the fibre cable.**

Overnight Parking Restrictions at Hogshill – 14th Dec.

At 9pm on Monday, 14th December the A3066 road, Hogshill Street in Beaminster will be closed until 6am.  This is to allow BT safe access to arrange cabling for a new customer connection.

Although in force for five days, it is anticipated that the work will be completed by the 16th December.

There will be parking restriction imposed overnight as indicated on the map below.  Download the full information HERE.

No Overnight ParkingAny unauthorised Person who uses or permits the use of the road(s) indicated in contravention of the Notice will be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000.

Temporary Closure of Potwell Lane, Littlewindsor – 16th Dec.

At 9am on Wednesday, 16th December, the road will be closed until 15.30hrs. All vehicles will be prohibited from proceeding between the access road to Potwell Farm and its junction with the access road to Potwell Gorse.
This is to allow BT to safely install 6 new telegraph poles.
The alternative route will be signposted – A3066 – A3164 – Mosterton

Although in force for five days, it is anticipated that the work will be completed by the 17th December.

Were you Witness To A Hate Crime Incident In Beaminster?

Dorset Police have issued a Witness appeal following a hate crime incident in Beaminster.
Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward following a hate crime incident in Beaminster.
At around 3.50pm on Wednesday 2 December 2020 the male victim was walking his dog along Hogshill Street when he saw a vehicle parked on the pavement, causing him to have to walk in the road to get around it.
The victim asked the driver of the vehicle to move it off the pavement. It is reported that the driver shouted racially aggravated abuse at the victim.
Police Constable Dan White, of Bridport police, said: “There is no place for hate crime in the community and I am carrying out an investigation to identify the man responsible.”
“I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed what happened to please get in touch.
I would also ask residents or motorists to check their home CCTV systems or dashcams for any relevant footage to assist my enquiries.”

Local Celebrity Chefs

Lesley Waters:

Born in London in 1960 and before becoming freelance, Lesley Waters, now aged 60yrs, worked at Pru Leith’s restaurant where she was promoted to senior chef and left with the position of Head Tutor of Leith’s School of Food & Wine.  Lesley started in television in 1989, regularly appearing in ‘Ready,Steady,Cook‘, ‘Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook‘ and ‘Great Food Live’.

From her her home in Halstock, a stunningly renovated 18th Century Farm, where she lives with her husband Tim and their two children, Lesley runs her Cookery School teaching all the classes herself and using local ingredients.  Lesley is also author of several Cookery Books.

Michael Hix:

Drive just 7 miles to the coast and you’ll find Mark Hix’s Kitchen Table. Join Mark at his Charmouth home where he will demonstrate and cook a stunning array of dishes based on the best of the season’s ingredients. There will be plenty of time to steal tips from Mark as he creates a British seasonal feast in front of your eyes which is then served as part of a four-course lunch with wines to match each course.
Even closer in Corscombe, Mark has just opened at the Fox Inn.

Matt Follas:

Masterchef winner in 2009, Matt opened his first restaurant The Wild Garlic in the 16th century toll house on Beaminster’s main square. He then moved onto opening the Bramble Cafe & Deli in Poundbury, Dorchester with his wife Amanda in 2016. This was sold in August 2020.
Matt’s new venture in Sherborne, Dorset and at the time of publishing, is yet to be named.

 

Harriet Mansell:

Harriet opened her first restaurant, called Robin Wylde, which is in a former ceramics shop on Silver Street, Lyme Regis on October 28th 2020.  Her menu will feature foraged food and local products.
Harriet has worked around the world in renowned restaurants and Michelin star kitchens, including cooking for the Qatari Royal Family in the Seychelles and the Murdoch family in the Caribbean.
The restaurant will be able to seat 32 people, however due to social distancing restrictions it will initially operate with a reduced capacity of 20 covers.

Hugh established River Cottage HQ in Dorset in 2004, and the operation is now based at Park Farm near Axminster in Devon. He has published numerous books, led several campaigns and activist shows as well as ‘mind the shop’ in Axminster.  “We will be doing all we can to help keep you well-fed and in touch with all the River Cottage activities both on and off-line. As ever, please do keep an eye on our social media where we will be regularly sharing recipes and information.”

2 Local Schools Report Covid-19

Mountjoy School, based in Beaminster, confirmed a person within the school had tested positive for Covid-19 and was last in the school on Wednesday, November 25th.

A statement on Mountjoy’s School’s website reads:

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health Dorset and Dorset Council.  All close contacts of the confirmed case have been identified and asked to self-isolate. The person who has tested positive was last in school on Wednesday, November 25 and only one class group has been in contact.  Unless you have been specifically notified that your child is a close contact, you do not need to take any further action at this stage.”

The Woodroffe School, based in Uplyme Road in Lyme Regis, confirmed that a student had tested positive for Coronavirus while another student had their positive test result reversed following a laboratory error.

The school, which remains open, had sent a letter to parents and carers on Friday (November 27) confirming the news.

Public Health Dorset is aware of the cases within the West Dorset schools and are assisting them along with Dorset Council and Public Health England South West.

Sam Crowe, Director of Public Health for Dorset and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Councils said: “All close contacts of the confirmed cases have been notified and need to self-isolate for 14 days.

“Contacts of the confirmed cases should get tested if they go on to develop symptoms. Even if people test negative, they must still self-isolate for 14 days.”

Anthony at Fruit and Two Veg in Beaminster has won Best Independent Food & Drink Retailer in this year’s Dorset Food, Drink & Farming Awards.

Beaminster’s local fruit & veg shop, throughout Lockdown has been providing home deliveries or shop collection. The team’s health is Anthony’s top priority, because of this customers are not allowed into the shop.
Anthony beat Frampton’s of Bridport who received a Highly Commended.  Other local winners include:

  • The Half Moon, Melplash won Best Dining Experience To Go with
  • Brassica, Beaminster receiving a Highly Commended.
  • Baboo Gelato, Bridport received a Highly Commended for Food Producer of the Year.

The Awards are held by Dorset Magazine and nominations are submitted by their readers. Church Remembrance Services

Public worship is suspended for the next 4 weeks. Broadwindsor church is open for prayer every morning 8am til 12 noon.

Broadwindsor Church will be open tomorrow, Sunday 8th November through to Wednesday, 11th November enabling you to go into the church for private prayer and to light a candle to remember your loved ones and to remember those who have lost their lives at war and in conflicts all across our world.  Also this year, the Church is offering people the opportunity to tie a ribbon to the church gate as a sign of remembering.  Ribbons will available and packaged up in envelopes for you to tie to the church gate.

Village Resident Launches Fund For Food Bank

Village resident Paul Davies witnessed something humbling this morning (Saturday 24th October). “In the checkout queue at Morrison’s behind a gent whose trolley was overloaded with packets of rice, bottles of Dolmio and cans of rice pudding. Nothing else. It went through at over £100. He paid with good cheer, wheeled through trolley to where they collect for the food bank and left the whole lot then walked out without any fuss. No “virtue signalling” You Sir, are a star. I hope you are a member of this site and see this- you clearly don’t want fuss but you should know how much that action means. MPs take note, be humbled and ashamed.”
