Marshwood Vale School Seek Foundation Governor

Marshwood CE Primary Academy are currently looking for a Foundation Governor and would be delighted to hear from anyone who has any of the above qualities.
Being a Governor can be enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding. It provides the opportunity to make a real difference to young people and give something back to your community.
Please don’t be put off by thinking that you have to have specialist expertise or knowledge. Enthusiasm and interest is much more important to start with and there is tried and tested training and support available to help you, including an induction programme and training provided through the Local Authority, as well as experienced Governors to support you.

Congratulations to the English Football Team

Gareth Southgate’s squad have progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA 2021 Championship after confidently beating the Ukraine by 4 goals to nil this evening 🙂

Captain Harry Kane, who scored England’s first goal in the 4th minute of the match and another in the 50th minute, can now look forward to their semi-final game against Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday 7th July at 8pm.
Other goal scorers were Harry Maguire (46′) & Jordan Henderson (53′).

The Final, to be played at Wembley, is on Sunday, 11th July, 8pm.

Classic Cars Display at Broadwindsor’s Fun Day

There will be a display of Classic Cars in the Comrades Hall car park on the morning of Broadwindsor’s Fun Day, Saturday, 14th August. Again a scaled down version from what we’ve had in previous years but certainly more than we had last year!  The cars will be on display from 10am until 12.30pm.
Anyone interested (specifically in the classic cars) is asked to contact: bwfundaycars@gmail.com.

Broadwindsor Community Film Club

Friday, 16th July at 7.30pm. Broadwindsor’s Film Club are extending their invitation to include guests at their next film ‘Ammonite‘.

Ammonite (15) is directed by Francis Lee. Filmed in Lyme Regis, set in the 1840’s, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning (played by KateWinslet) and a young woman (played by Saoirse Ronan) sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.

Have Your Say Re: The White Lion

Residents of Broadwindsor, Hursey and Littlewindsor can expect a hand delivered questionnaire through their letterboxes within the next week seeking their feedback on the future of Palmers’ White Lion pub in the village square.  The questionnaire will not be available online.  Residents are urged to complete the questionnaire – even if they only use the pub once a month for a meal – you can help shape the outcome.

The questionnaire is on a double sided sheet of A4 paper and consists mainly of tick box answers. You can remain anonymous if you want to.  Questionnaires will also be hand collected by arrangement (from your doorstep if you don’t wish to be distrurbed) to ensure as many responses from local residents as possible. are gathered.

Negotiations with Palmers Brewery are ongoing and people are working hard in continued discussions re: the future of the White Lion in Broadwindsor.  Cllr. Leader stated the situation is “not hopeless“.  Although the pub will always remain tied to Palmers Brewery, they have offered some manoeuvrability on a sustainable rent and all involved are trying to reach a deal that will work.

Following collection of the questionnaire, there will be a Public Meeting at the Comrades Hall on Thursday, 29th July at 7.30pm (tbc).

The Bishops’ Kitchen – July 21

DANDELION & LEMON BISCUITS

  • 20 dandelion heads
  • 125 g softened butter
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 1 egg, zest of 1 lemon & 1 tbsp juice
  • 180g plain flour
  • 20g cornflour
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Method:

Prepare the flowers: wash heads then remove petals by pinching firmly and pulling (a little green is ok but not too much as it can impart a bitter taste).
Cream the butter & sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and lemon zest. Sift in the dry ingredients and combine well. Add lemon juice and the petals then mix.
Dollop spoonfuls onto a baking tray and cook for 12 mins. at 180°C/Gas 4 until golden.
Cool on a wire rack and enjoy.

DANDELION & BACON SALAD

  • Large handfuls of unopened dandelion flower buds
  • 1 bunch (about 2 large handfuls) young dandelion leaves
  • 4 rashers rindless, smoked, streaky bacon
  • 4 tbsp extra virgin oil
  • 1 tbsp wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • Salt & black pepper

Method:

Wash the dandelion flowers and leaves and pat dry between paper towels.
Cut the bacon into small pieces and fry in a dry pan over fairly high heat until crisp then drain on paper towels.
Toss the dandelion flowers in the bacon fat over a medium heat until the buds are just open then drain on paper towels.
Put the dandelion leaves in a salad bowl and mix in the fried bacon and flowers.
Put the oil, vinegar and sugar in a small screw top jar and season with salt & pepper.  Seal the jar, shake well then add to the salad and toss lightly.

The dandelion (Taraxacum officiniale) is a type of daisy. Found in virtually every kind of habitat and lawn, it is vital to many pollinating insects such as bumblebees, butterflies, hover flies, day flying moths and solitary bees. They are frequently treated as an unwanted weed.

The flower head is infact made up of lots of individual flowers known as florets or ray flowers. Each common dandelion flowerhead contains approximately 150 – 200 florets.
A rich source of vitamins, minerals, the leaves, root, and flowers can all be eaten.

…to Vikki & Spike, now ex-landlords of Broadwindsor’s pub, The White Lion.

Vikki and Spike are off to pastures new, closer to family at The New Inn, Park Lane Off Church Street, Blagdon, Bristol, BS40 7SB. The venue appears very attractive situated by Blagdon lake and several locals have already declared promises to take a trip to visit them and of course, all will be welcomed.

Thank you so much Spike and Vikki for everything you have contributed to our village while you have been here. You have been an invaluable part of our community. You will be sorely missed but we all wish you both wealth, health and prosperity in your new venture.

What’s happening to the pub?

The Parish Council is waiting to hear back from Palmers Brewery re: negotiations of the building becoming a community run pub: initial village feedback would indicate the situation is fraught with problems as anyone taking over is subject to Palmers’ rules, ales and pricing. This cute and friendly chap was discovered wandering at the top of Hursey road earlier this afternoon by a car driver.  He is safe and being held at the home of David Leader at West Hill House Cottages.

He is wearing a bright red collar and is very engaging.
