Watch The Gypsy King At The Knapp Inn

There is much suspense and anticipation, Tyson ‘The Gypsy King’ Fury is set to defend his heavyweight crown against top contender Dillian Whyte on 23rd April at Wembley Stadium,

To watch the match – one would need to have BT Sports and then pay an additional ÂŁ24.95.
Alternatively,
one could go to the Knapp Inn at Clay Lane, Beaminster, enjoy a drink and watch with some sporting atmosphere!

  • Tyson Fury (22 KOs), based in Morecambe, has held the heavyweight title since November 28th, 2015, the night he ended the nearly decade-long championship run of Wladimir Klitschko. He fights on home soil for the first time in almost four years.
  • Dillian Whyte (KOs), who was raised in Brixton, London, earned a shot at Fury with a seven-year run as a world-level heavyweight.

Around 94,000 fans are expected to pack into Wembley Stadium.
Ring walks
for the main event are expected any time between 9.45pm and 10.15pm – although the unpredictable nature of live boxing means this could be subject to change.

Any questions? Contact Lesley at the Knapp Inn: 01308 862408.

Our Queen celebrates her 96th birthday today and reportedly will be spending her time relaxing at her home in Sandringham.  This is the Queen’s official birthday.  Her actual birthday is 21st April.

Most Commonwealth realms release a Queen’s Birthday Honours list at this time.

We wish her all good wishes and many more.

The Imagined Village – Thursday, 21st July

Village resident Simon Emmerson will be back on stage after a decade long hiatus, with his band, The Imagined Village who are premiering at the Electric Palace on Thursday, 21st July at 8pm.

This will be a special warm up gig with members of the original line-up, joined by Billy Bragg.

The most ambitious folk fusion band of the 21st century, The Imagined Village set out to match English traditional songs against the sounds of contemporary multi-cultural England, with influences from Asia, the Caribbean and elsewhere. And they did so with an extraordinary line-up that included folk celebrities:

  • Eliza Carthy
  • Martin Carthy,
  • Simon Emmerson (of Afro-Celt Sound System fame),
  • Sitar exponent Sheema Mujherjee,
  • That rousing dhol and tabla percussionist Johnny Kalsi, and
  • Drummer Andy Gangadeen.

They recorded three albums, played at major festivals from Glastonbury to Cambridge, headlined at concert halls and appeared on Later…With Jools Holland, performing a stomping, percussive re-working of Cold Haily Rainy Night (the song that won them Best Traditional Track at the 2008 BBC Folk Awards). Then, after recording Bending The Dark in 2012, they took an unexpectedly lengthy break, from which they have at last thankfully returned.

Tickets are available from Bridport Electric Palace – Click HERE.

  • ÂŁ29 in advance
  • ÂŁ30 at the door

USE THE EARLY BIRD PROMO CODE: IMAGINE & SAVE ÂŁ1.50 per ticket!

The Imagined Village will be performing at this year’s Beautiful Days Festival – 19th-21st August at Escot Park, Devon – playing a VERY special headline performance on the Big Top Stage.

Full Moon – Saturday, 16th April

The Full Moon is when the Sun and the Moon are aligned on opposite sides of Earth, and 100% of the Moon’s face is illuminated by the Sun.

This month’s Full Moon is at 19.56hrs. on Saturday, 16th April and is known as the ‘Pink Moon‘.

It is also the Paschal Full Moon. Simply speaking, the Paschal Full Moon is the first full Moon after the Spring Equinox. This Moon can sometimes occur in March and sometimes in April. The first Sunday after April’s full moon is celebrated as Easter Sunday. It’s possible that the reason why the Easter Bunny brings eggs is because April’s Full Moon is also known as the Egg Moon, given that animals such as geese begin mating and laying eggs in Spring.

This name is not because the Moon will be pink in colour. It comes from the pink moss, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the Spring in North America. Other names for this month’s Full Moon, all of which indicate the season, include:

  • Full Sprouting Grass Moon
  • Egg Moon
  • Full Fish Moon, among coastal tribes because this was the time that the fish swam upstream to spawn.

At the same time, April is a time when rivers and streams begin to fully thaw. Accordingly, April’s Full moon was:

  • Full Melting Moon, by the Shoshone tribe.
  • Moon Where Ice Breaks in the River, by the Arapaho tribe.
  • Sugar Maker Moon, by the Abenaki tribes
  • Sugarbush Moon, by the Ojibwe tribe. The Ojibwe tribe would journey north to their spring camps to tap maple syrup and engage in spear fishing. Maple syrup was integral to Ojibwe culture: not only was it a crucial method of seasoning all their foods (they did not have access to salt at that time), but it also symbolized harmony within the community and with the forces of nature around them.

In other religions:

In Islamic communities around the world, April’s full moon is celebrated as Bara’at Night, also known as the Night of Innocence. Muslims offer up prayers, asking their God to absolve dead ancestors of their sins. They also prepare sweet desserts such as halva or zarda and give it out to children, the needy, and other members of their community.
