The White Lion Gets A Facelift

Broadwindsor.org has had several enquiries and photos sent in over the last couple of days due to of all the activity taking place at the White Lion: painters outside… lights on inside… lights on in the evening… had anything been agreed?

The doors, windows and fascia boards have been rubbed down and painted in preparation for the day when the White Lion reopens its doors.

Steering group chairman David Leader said: ‘It’s fantastic to see that Palmers are investing in the White Lion. All the outside woodwork is being cleaned, prepared and repainted. This will make a huge difference to the appearance of such a beautiful historic building which sits at the heart of our community. We are very grateful to Palmers.’

On Tuesday 5th October, previous landlords Spike and Vikki handed in their keys as their tenancy came to an end and they said a final goodbye to the place that was their home for nearly four years. On Facebook Vikki thanked all for their support and wished all well for the future.

The Save The White Lion steering group continue to work hard behind the scenes to re-open and run the White Lion as a Community pub. Keep up to date on the website: https://savethewhitelion.org.

Grant applications to various funding bodies have been submitted and a share issue is being prepared to be offered to villagers. The Steering Group published an advert two weeks ago seeking a live-in manager – More info HERE.

More details are expected soon. Steering group member Margery Hookings now has the position of keeping us all informed. 🙂

In Marshwood Vale…

In Marshwood Vale

Standing on Pilsdon Pen
the last twits of nighttime hunters
share the lightening sky
with the strident call of cockerels
who sense rather than see the day
A thick blanket of mist
sits across the low-lying land
A silver veil that muffles the senses
Somewhere a tractor and trailer
cross a rutted field
The load…
a rhythmic banging bass
behind the sweet notes of a wren
the first bird of the morning chorus
A Plover and a Crow add voices
to the waking auditorium
Spectral trees emerge slowly
from the cloying blanket of mist
Languid shanks of cable
span the gaps
in a line of skeletal poles
receding…
to the mist locked valleys below
A pale peach accent to the sky
hints at the possibility of dawn
Distant hilltops
poke like islands
from the waters
of a silent silver estuary
Stubborn mists
cling to the fields and trees
This gradual unveiling
This restoration of colour
to a silvered landscape
Is another extra ordinary day
for Marshwood Vale

‘The Place I Love’ Project Launch – Saturday, 16th October

The new arts and heritage project culminating in an interpretive map of Broadwindsor is being launched on Saturday 16th October at the Comrades Hall, Broadwindsor.

Work by village artists, much of it inspired by the local area, will be on show and for sale between 10am and 4pm. The WI has kindly offered to provide refreshments throughout the day.

Organised by a local art group, the event will feature work by Maggi Ouin, Gill and Peter Coates, Mandy Selhurst, Izzy Masey, Carolyne Kardia, Victoria Saines, Donna Heys, Dave Shaw, Norma Roberts, Liz Ridley, Bev Gillard, John Iveson and Libby Jukes.

Each artist will have their own table and there will a central display on specially created boards, kindly made for the occasion by villager Malcolm Heaver, which will be donated to the hall for future art-related events.

Work by pupils from Broadwindsor Primary School will also be on display.

Entry to the exhibition is free. There are no card payment facilities, so please bring cash, your cheque book or make an arrangement to pay the artists by bank transfer.

During the day, Margery Hookings, a writer who lives in the village and is leading The Place I Love project on behalf of Windrose Rural Media Trust, will be inviting locals to tell her what they love about Broadwindsor. Her Windrose colleague, James Harrison, will be filming the launch to include in a short video.

As the project progresses, singer Amanda Boyd will be collecting local folk songs. Her most recent work with Windrose involved combing archive film and folk songs at memory cafes for people with dementia.

Research into field names and land use now and in the past is another strand of the project. Material gathered will be lodged with Dorset History Centre.

The interpretive map of the village is being designed by artist Megan Edwards, whose family live in the village, and will incorporate points of interest highlighted during the course of the project. It will be unveiled in the village in February 2022.

The Place I Love project is funded by Dorset Council, Dorset AONB and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council and supported by volunteers in the community.

Factor In The Tractor

In Dorsetshire we’ve got it all
The landscape and attractions
For adults to children small
We have the best distractions

Our little lanes and scenic views
Are the best beyond reproach
But satnavs driving time it skews
When you’re stuck behind a coach

Factor in the Tractor
If you’re on the road, on your way
Factor in the Tractor
Because we don’t have motorway

If you live life at the speed of light
Then Dorset’s not for you
But if you feel our pace is right
Then here’s what you should do

Factor in the Tractor
If you’re on the road, on your way
Factor in the Tractor
Because we don’t have motorway

Back British Farming Day – Wednesday, 15th September

Today is Back British Farming Day and MPs are being encouraged to show their support for British farming as part of an annual initiative which aims to celebrate agriculture and its importance to the UK economy.

Now in it’s sixth year, the NFU’s Back British Farming Day shines a spotlight on the work that our farmers do.
The initiative gives producers an opportunity to promote their commitment to high production and environmental standards.  It also aims to highlight the importance of the industry to the UK economy, contributing over £120bn each year and employing four million people. Prominent farming accounts on social media have started to encourage farmers, the public and MPs to join in. Read more HERE.

Village resident & poet, Peter Roe wrote the following poem in 2017.
