Wall At Bernards’ Place Almost Complete

 As the wall in Bernards’ Place nears completion, Chris Edgerly had some help at the weekend from Matthew and James Pickering of Broadwindsor. The boys each placed an ammonite into the wall as part of the montage Chris has created from the smaller ammonites donated.

The ammonite montage itself is now complete and Chris hopes to complete the whole wall by the end of this week, fair weather permitting.

Matthew & James’ enthusiasm and involvement prompted a memory for Chris – he recalled from a young age when he was led up a ladder by a bricklayer to cement and lay his first brick. We hope that Matthew and James enjoy their memory and showing their friends with a sense of pride.

Happy St. David’s Day

St.David WindowThe only Welsh saint to be canonized by the Western Catholic Church, the feast of St. David is celebrated on 1st March each year.  Born on the Pembrokeshire cliffs into an aristocratic family, during a fierce storm approximately 1,500 yars ago, his date of birth is unknown but he died on 1st March 589 AD at 90-100 yrs old. He became a monk at a young age and is said to have founded a monastery close to where he was born. This area is now known as St Davids. Two pilgrimages to St David’s Cathedral are said to be akin to one pilgrimage to Rome. Allegedly, his last words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – Do the little things.

The Feast of St. David is an opportunity to celebrate their traditional foods:

  • Welsh Rarebit – a hot cheese-based sauce served over slices of toasted bread.
  • Taffies – gingerbread shaped like a Welshman on a goat!
  • Cawl – an undefined soup usually containing lamb and leeks.
  • Welsh cakes – flatbreads sweetened with sugar & dried fruit, baked on a griddle.  Sometimes seen on sale in Broadwindsor Community Stores too!
  • Welsh lamb.
  • Bara Brith – a rich fruit tea loaf.

It used to be that the children of Wales were given a half day holiday on St David’s Day. It’s not a national holiday in the UK and in 2007, former PM Tony Blair rejected calls for it to become a public holiday.

DaffodilsThe wild daffodil is thought to have been a symbol of Wales since the 19th century. as a replacement for the humble leek which was introduced by the Romans during their invasion. It is interesting that the Welsh word for Leek (Cennin) and Daffodil (Cennin Pedr) are very similar.  A symbol of spring and symbolising new beginnings and rebirth, daffodils are a positive, life-affirming symbol, with a bright and joyful yellow colour. Daffodils are strong, resilient flowers that pop up year after year.

Welsh flag - DragonThe dragon appeared on the battle flags of various British soldiers on their way to Rome in the 4th century. It was later adopted by 5th century Welsh kings who were keen to show their authority following the Roman withdrawal.

Welsh Flag - St. DavidThe Flag of Saint David has been used as a flag representing Wales (as an alternative to the Red Dragon flag), in the same sense that the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrewand Saint Patrick are used to represent England, Scotland and Ireland (of which they are respectively patron saints). It is also similar to the arms of the Diocese of St David’s.

World Book Day – 4th March

The 24th World Book Day is on Thursday 4th March 2021. It is the annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the joy of reading, particularly children.

At Broadwindsor school, as with the majority of schools in the country, children are usually invited to dress up as their favourite literary character on the day.

Local children are encouraged to visit the village’s Telephone Box Book Exchange in the Square on Thursday too!

This year’s World Book Day theme is ‘share a story’. As we are still under Lockdown, you can encourage your children to share a story with the people they live with. These could extend to including Grandparents or other family members to read stories over a video chat like Zoom or Facetime; setting aside a Family Reading Time when everyone at home all read their own books or magazines; building a cosy reading den with cushions in a corner, or a sheet draped over chairs to make a tent; read a story or chapter and then perhaps act it out together.

Sponsored by National Book Tokens, in partnership with schools all over the country, over 15 million £1 World Book Day Book tokens are distributed to children and young people (that’s almost one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland) every year on World Book Day.  Their mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Midweek Motivator Quiz – Wednesday 24th February

Beaminster Memorial Fields Closed

At the beginning of this year, Beaminster Town Council announced that Beaminster had been awarded over £98,000 by the National Lottery Communities Fund, (NLCF), to enable them to deliver their Skate Park Project in 2021.  It has taken a while but it will be worth the effort.

Work has now started on the construction for this project and the site is expected to be closed from Tuesday 22nd February for a period of nine weeks.
The park remains open but the car park is closed.

Beaminster Town Council has received two amounts of funding from West Dorset District Council and now the generous NLCF award takes them to their funding target.  This means that that they can now commence the project and, COVID restrictions permitting, they hope to complete it by the summer of 2021.  They will be working closely with Maverick Industries on the build, and the Prout Bridge Project to develop the launch event.

Following the Government’s announcement of their 3 Step plan out of Lockdown,  The White Lion in Broadwindsor MAY be allowed to open its door on Monday, 17th May 2021 after being closed since forever it seems!

Landlords Spike & Vikki commented: ” We can’t post any days or times yet, we want to wait ’til nearer the time to see what the situation is. It will be good to bring the pub back to life as it should be.”

We are so used to seeing Spike, Vikki, Molly & Tabitha looking like this.
We do look forward to seeing their smiles when we walk in through their door again – smiling too!

We all have our fingers crossed.

The BBC reports that the closure statistics highlight how the duration of economic support, as well as the vaccination timetable, could be crucial in determining how long doors stay closed.

The furlough wage support scheme is due to finish at the end of April 2021 – whilst business rates holidays for hospitality and leisure firms are due to end early in the same month in each of the UK nations.

The end of March will also see the application period close for Government-backed loans of up to £50,000 to smaller businesses under the “bounce back” scheme.

The Bike ProjectThe Bike Project takes second-hand bikes, fixes them up and donates them to refugees to help them access safe, free transport. The charity helps refugees get access to bikes, as they are not legally allowed to work and can only live on £37.75 a week. A bike is more than just transport. A bike can help them not only connect with their local community, but also access legal help, food banks, support with mental health and so much more! Road Disruption Around Crewkerne

A fire emergency at the Nat West Bank in Crewkerne is causing diversions everywhere.

Crewkerne Headlines And Topics reported that Market Street in Crewkerne is currently closed to traffic as fire crews tackle a blaze in the former Nat West Bank building.

The incident recorded as being in a derelict building was reported to Fire Control at 12:16 hrs.
In an official statement from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, a spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at a large fire in Crewkerne. We currently have 14 fire engines and various specialist vehicles and officers in attendance. Crews from Crewkerne, Yeovil, Taunton, Chard, Street, Martock, Ilminster, Sherborne, Axminster, Somerton, Wincanton and Bovey Tracy are in attendance. The Police and Ambulance are also in attendance.”
