Broadwindsor’s Rangers are raising funds for their group by collecting Used Printer Cartridges (genuine cartridges only). They have placed a collection box is inside the Comrades Hall Servery (the area used for the Post Office Outreach service).

Captain Kirk Boldly Goes Where No 90 year Old Has Gone Before

90 year old William Shatner, the actor known best for his role as Captain James T. Kirk, of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the original “Star Trek,” and three others will embark on a brief journey to the edge of space this afternoon.

You can watch the launch LIVE at 2.30pm (BST) on Blue Origin’s YouTube channel – Click HERE. The video will begin about 90 minutes before the flight. (Blue Origin is the name of Jeff Bezos Space company.)

The launch was scheduled for yesterday but windy conditions over West Texas moved it forward 24 hours to today. If more strong winds occur today, the company could choose to delay the flight by another 24 hours, to Thursday.

Three other passengers will join William Shatner on Wednesday’s flight:

  • Audrey Powers, a Blue Origin vice president who oversees New Shepard flight operations; like Mr. Shatner, she did not have to pay for her seat.

  • Chris Boshuizen, a co-founder of Planet Labs, a company that builds small satellites, also known as CubeSats, that are used by assorted clients for monitoring Earth from orbit.

  • Glen de Vries, a chief executive and co-founder of Medidata Solutions, a company that built software for clinical trials.

Dr. Boshuizen & Mr. de Vries are the second and third paying passengers to fly on a Blue Origin flight. The first was Oliver Daemen, an 18-year-old man from the Netherlands. The company has not disclosed how much any of these customers paid for their seats on the flights.

When interviewed on Monday, William Shatner said “I’m thrilled and anxious, and a little nervous and a little frightened, about this whole new adventure.”

Telephone Box Book Exchange Update

Broadwindsor’s Telephone Box, which has been operating as a Book & DVD Exchange, was recently formerly adopted by our Parish Council.  Sadly, people continue to leave bags and piles of magazines on the floor of the telephone box – they are not suitable at all: creating mouldy paper and an unpleasant experience for anyone entering the telephone box.  Please show our Telephone Book Exchange some respect.

Chris Edgerley – March 2021

This week, all the mouldy magazines were removed and the books boxed up as work begins on fitting proper shelves inside and painting the exterior.

The work is being carried out on a voluntary basis by village resident Chris Edgerley, who rebuilt the ammonite wall in Bernards’ Place in the Spring of this year.

The White Lion Makes The Bridport News

Bradley White, reporter for the Bridport & Lyme Regis News spoke with Steering Group Chair, David Leader and published the following:

VILLAGERS are hoping to raise their glasses this Christmas as they strive to launch their community pub.

The White Lion in Broadwindsor is set to reopen with the village’s residents at the helm.

The Palmers pub closed in the summer and since then there have been negotiations with regard to the community taking it over.

A steering group was put together consisting of a number of villagers with expertise in running pubs and community venues, along with a solicitor and some parish councillors.

The group has been in talks with Palmers in recent months after a survey revealed 95 per cent of respondents were in favour of the White Lion being run as a community pub.

There is currently a ‘principle agreement’ in place between the steering group and Palmers, with a contract expected in the near future.

Parish councillor David Leader is leading the project.

He said: “It’s exciting and it is going very well. A lot of people are investing a lot of time and effort in trying to make this happen and there’s a lot to be encouraged by.

“Things have moved on positively in terms of discussions – we’re not there yet but we have draft legal agreements which are being worked on.

“Whilst there is not currently a contract there are principle agreements in place with Palmers but there are several things which need to be ironed out.

“In an ideal world we would like to be open for Christmas. There are a number of factors which could delay that date but that is what we are aiming for.”

The next part of the plan will be to raise the funds needed to cover liabilities, refurbishment and the initial purchase of stock. The steering group estimates around £30,000 will need to be raised.

One of the ways the group hopes to achieve this is through a community share issue, in which members of the community can buy into the project in exchange for voting rights.

In order to go through with this, the pub needs to be incorporated as a not-for-profit business, which the group are hoping to go through this month. At this point the group will be out and about in the village to drum up support.

In the meantime, members of the steering group have started up ‘the Comrades’ Arms’, a makeshift pub run out of the Broadwindsor Village Hall.

Mr Leader said: “The Comrades’ Arms has been opened as a temporary measure so that there is an open pub in the village. It is also a way which we can raise funds and a smaller project for the steering group to prepare them for the running of the pub.

Mr Leader added that there are a number of fundraising activities being planned for the coming weeks.

Churchyard Clear Up – Saturday, 16th October

Church warden, Philip Coltart is seeking helpers on the morning of Saturday, 16th October to assist clearing up the chaurchyard at St. John the Baptist’s church in Broadwindsor.

  • Meet in Churchyard at 9am.
  • Please bring wheelbarrows and tools.
  • Don’t forget your gloves!

You will be provided with tea, coffee and soft drinks as well as hot dogs, rolls etc. 🙂

Unfortunately, this event which was to be on Friday, 15th October has had to be cancelled.  Travelling Trends require a minimum of 60 participants for the event to take place and sadly, there has not been enough tickets sales.

Work is going on behind the scenes to re-open the White Lion at Broadwindsor as a community pub.

A Steering Group is meeting regularly to move the project forward. It comprises:

Between them, group members have a wide range of skills and experience. We believe that securing the right deal with Palmers represents the best – and only – chance for the White Lion to re-open at the heart of our community. We want it to happen, and we know the community does too. We need to raise at least £30,000 to make it a reality.

Agreement with Palmers has been reached but not yet signed. We can’t tell you all that’s been happening because some of the detail is commercially sensitive. However, it’s our intention to publicise a summary of our meetings to keep you updated as best we can.

Save the White Lion, summary of meeting 6/10/21

Community Benefit Society application – due to be incorporated within next 3 weeks. Share issue put to community (like the village did for the shop).

Business plan – final version almost ready. All payments need to be made by end of year 3.

Funding – seeking grant from Broadwindsor Group Parish Council. Applications to grant funding bodies identified as most likely to support project. Comrades Arms trading well, taking £1,200 in first four days.
Two villagers planning two events in aid of Save the White Lion, in addition to regular discos where bar takings will go to pub fund. More details soon.

Yard of ale fundraising ‘thermometer’ to be placed in the Square.

Bank account – can be started only when we are a Community Benefit Society.  

Job advert for manager/chef – not much response yet. Exploring other outlets. 

Logo – new logo in consultation with Palmers. Original pub sign (pre-dating existing one) by George Biles will be displayed internally.

Refurbishment – ongoing discussions on updating interior and adapting layout for ambience, efficiency and increased number of covers. Kitchen left sparkly clean by Spike and Vikki. Now to cost kitchen equipment etc for business plan.

Timeline – end of October/early November – approach community on share issue.

Christmas/New Year – hope to be open.

Today Is International Lesbian Day

International Lesbian Day is an annual day to celebrate and bring visibility to lesbians in the LGBT+ community.  First beginning in the late 1980’s/ early 1990’s in New Zealand and then Australia – the exact foundation of International Lesbian Day is uncertain. The first Australian event was held at the Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne on October 13, 1990.

There are two lesbian flags:

1. The standard lesbian flag consists of six shades of red and pink colours and a white bar in the centre.
Sometimes it has a lipstick mark in the corner indicating that the holder is a “lipstick lesbian” (slang for a lesbian who exhibits a greater amount of feminine gender attributes, such as wearing make-up).  Some lesbians also oppose use of any flag revised from the lipstick original because its designer Natalie McCray reportedly wrote racist, biphobic and transphobic comments on a since-deleted blog.

2. The Labrys flag, features a battle-axe on a dark purple background.  The colour purple, or lavender is long associated with lesbianism as is the colour of violets – a flower historically used by lesbians to indicate themselves to other lesbians.
It represents the strength and feminism of homosexual women and was adopted into the lesbian community in the 1970’s. The labrys is also featured within Greek and Roman mythology, associated with the festival  Laphria,  Artemis, Goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and vegetation and of chastity and childbirth and Determis, Goddess of Fertility & Agriculture.

Monday, October 11th is National Coming Out Day, which has been recognised sonce 1980. It supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to “come out of the closet“.  It is a great opportunity for employers to demonstrate that everyone is accepted by giving visibility to this day at the workplace, making employees feel less anxious about sharing other aspects of their personality and their identity.
