Save The White Lion NEWS UPDATE #6

The White Lion Steering Group met by video call on Monday 3rd January to discuss preparations for the public meeting at Comrades Hall, Broadwindsor, on Tuesday 11th January at 7pm.

This is the meeting at which members of the public will be asked to support the fundraising campaign to raise the £30,000 needed for the village to take over the White Lion as a tenant and operate it as a community pub.

The deal negotiated with Palmers Brewery represents the best chance the village has for the pub to be refurbished and reopened in spring 2022. The Steering Group believe that community management is the only way the pub can survive. A village pub at the heart of the community benefits everyone, not just pub goers. It helps to keep the community together, provides a social hub and impacts on property prices.

The Steering Group comprises:

  • David Leader (Chair)
  • Elaine Leader
  • Susanna Newall
  • Chris Newall
  • Sandra Burrows
  • Charles Ouin
  • Luke Pickering
  • Andrew Hookings
  • Margery Hookings
  • Fraser Hughes
  • Chris Edgerley
  • Rick Dyke.

The following is a summary of the meeting on 3rd January, excluding commercially sensitive or personal information:

  • A flyer will be delivered to Broadwindsor households, with supporting information on the websites: SaveTheWhiteLion.org, Broadwindsor.org and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council at broadwindsorgroup.gov.uk
  • The steering group will deliver meeting invitations to households by the end of this weekend (8th-9th January). This will be followed up by personal visits to households to those not at the meeting on 11th January.
  • Supporting information will comprise a summary of the project and its history, the steering group vision and the benefits to the community, securing the White Lion’s future and Business Plan forecast, a membership form, legal structure and explanation of funding sources – which could include Crowdfunding if match funding is available.
  • It is hoped a video link can be set up and publicised for those who can’t get to the meeting in person or if Covid regulations prevent large numbers attending.
  • It was agreed that membership of Broadwindsor Community Pub, which gives members a right to the attend the AGM and vote and to ask questions of the management team, will be £5. This is the same as Broadwindsor Community Stores. However, the community needs to raise a minimum of £30,000 through donations to enable the steering group to sign the tenancy with Palmers.
  • The fundraising campaign will take place over a four-week period from Jan 11th – Feb 8th 2022. The Steering group will sign the tenancy with Palmers Brewery on 17th February only if the necessary target has been reached. Then refurbishment can take place and a manager appointed. Discussions about potential manager are ongoing.
  • Local businesses are being approached to support the community pub project. The Comrades Arms has already raised £3,000 for the project. A banner will be put up on the hedge at Bernards’ Place to highlight the fundraising campaign, alongside a Yard of Ale ‘thermometer’ so everyone can see how much we still need to raise.
  • Hard copies of the Business Plan will be available at The Comrades Arms / shop / post office and be available online. A limited number will be available for inspection at the public meeting on 11th January.

The Comrades Arms Opens At 6pm Tomorrow

Opening it’s door tomorrow (Friday 1st Oct) at 6pm is The Comrades Arms in the Lewesdon Room, upstairs at the Comrades Hall in Broadwindsor.

Recently returned from France, village resident Andrew Hookings will be running the Comrades Arms as an individual, along with the support of volunteers.  He did this several years ago, for a period of 4 weeks inbetween landlords Rich & Kate Moulsdale and Spike & Vikki who had the tenancy at The White Lion.  It proved very successful and the proceeds, almost £2,000, went to the village hall.

Andrew commented: “The Comrades Arms will provide a venue in the heart of the community for people to get together socially and enjoy a drink, whilst the White Lion is closed.
With the “Save The White Lion” campaign getting off the ground soon, it seems appropriate for the proceeds from The Comrades Arms to go to such a worthy cause.”

As well as being open at the weekend, the Comrades Arms will be open on a Tuesday evening for those who’d like to eat their fish ‘n’ chips from Nat’s van with a drink.

Andrew with Terry Clarke & Trish Messer stocking up yesterday.

With some stock and supplies, £400 worth this week, being sourced through Broadwindsor Community Stores, our village shop should benefit too 🙂
Other ales and ciders have also been sourced locally.

It is hoped that you will be able to use your debit card tomorrow night but bring cash – just in case!

The Comrades Arms – Open Friday 1st October

Village residents Andrew & Margery Hookings are expected back from France mid-month.  Already getting things in place, Andrew Hookings will be re-opening the Comrades Arms in the Lewesdon Room, upstairs at the Comrades Hall on Friday, 1st October at 6pm.

Andrew, who was landlord of the Half Moon in Melplash from ’97-2000, will be offering local ales and ciders on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm and on Sunday afternoons from midday.  He hopes to include Tuesday evenings to go alongside Nat’s Fish & Chip van.  His other ideas include:

  • running Quiz nights on Tuesdays,
  • running a pool competition on Sundays,
  • organise some food evenings a couple of times a month with local ‘chefs’ producing some simple meals.

Andrew, who is Chairman of the Broadwindsor Community Stores Committee, a member of the Comrades Hall committee, a member of the Broadwindsor Fun Group and more recently, a member of the Steering group negotiating with Palmers re: the future of the White Lion stated that all profits will go the Save The White Lion fund.  Previously, the Comrades Arms was open for 4 weeks prior to Rich and Kate taking on the White Lion and almost £2k was raised for the Comrades Hall.

Margery is running an Art Exhibition and Sale at Comrades Hall on Saturday, 16th October – Read more HERE.

RNLI Lyme Regis Thank Broadwindsor Community

Jacqui Sewell, on behalf of the Post Office Users Group, received a letter from the Chairman of the RNLI Supporters Group, Ken Lavery after taking collection of all the books donated to the Post Office Group at the Comrades Hall.

Villagers responded by appearing with bags, cardboard boxes and with car boots loaded full of books at the Post Office on Friday, 23rd April.  Even more books had been left for collection at the Telephone Box Book Exchange.  Thank you to Broadwindsor Community Stores for providing some much needed cardboard boxes! The books were collected by a Lyme Regis RNLI Supporter earlier this week on Tuesday.

This year’s Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week is from Saturday 24 July 2021 – Saturday 31 July 2021

Books! Books! Books!

Obviously, our well used Telephone Book Exchange has a limited capacity.  🙂
Each time, when tidied and cleared, excess books have been taken to the Comrades Hall.  There are now too many and the time has come to donate.

Lyme Regis RNLI Week which, all being well, will run from 24th July to 31st July this year, will be running a large secondhand book stall to raise funds that week.  They have arranged to collect our boxes of books from the Comrades Hall on Tuesday, 27th April when the Post Office Outreach service opens at 10am.

If you have any books you would like to donate, please bring them to the Comrades Hall, this Friday, 23rd April between 10am and 12 noon in order for them to be included in the donation.  Thank you.
