Sam Starts Charity Cycle This Monday, 17th July

Sam Cochrane sets out from Oslo, Norway Monday morning to start peddling on his journey of an estimated distance of 2,200 kilometres… Destination Poole, Dorset, U.K.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sam is unlikely to make it to Broadwindsor after his event but did send this message into the Editor earlier in the week:

With the start date closing in quickly for my cycle, I just wanted to reach out to yourself and the those in Broadwindsor and Beaminster who donated and say thank you for the donations.
I know the charity is very happy with the overwhelming support I have received in undertaking this fantastic opportunity for them. I also want to say a massive thank you to you also for publishing it on the local webpage, without gaining the reach I have so far with this, it would not have been as rewarding for the charity and a thank you goes to the White Lion and The Knapp Inn as well for placing my poster in their pubs for all to see.
Kind regards,
Sam Cochrane.

If you’d like to keep up with Sam and how he progresses, then follow his blog  – visit https://oslotopoole.weebly.com

If you haven’t donated yet and would like to – you can scan the QR code on the poster above or click HERE to visit Sam’s Just Giving page and make your donation to support the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance,. Thank you!

We wish you safe travels and good luck with your journey Sam! 🙂

Sally’s 20th & Final Race For Life

Village resident Sally Sarling celebrates her 72nd birthday today 🙂 and we wish her many happy returns.

Sally will also be celebrating 20 years participation in the Race For Life, raising funds for Cancer Research UK,  taking part in the 5Km race in Poole on Saturday, 3rd June. That’s quite an accomplishment!

Sally recently announced that this would be her final year.  She began running in the Race For Life after both her parents and her badminton partner died from cancer.
1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further.
Please help Cancer Research UK improve results even faster by donating to Sally’s Just Giving page.

Thank you & good luck Sally!

Please Support Sam Cochrane’s Charity Bike Ride

Local plasterer, Stewart Cochrane sadly lost his father in September last year.  Stewart’s son Sam, 29 years old, who lives in Oslo, is preparing himself for what has to be acknowledged as an awesome cycle trip raising funds for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, a charity dear to all of us residing in rural areas.

Sam’s Grandad is obviously his inspiration
After losing my Grandad in September, I realised I had to do something would make him proud and combine his ´get up and go´ attitude which took him on so many adventures of his own.
If it wasn’t for The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, I wouldn’t have had as many years with him as I did and to them I am extremely grateful. Which is why it makes sense to combine the opportunity and make it an opportunity to help those who helped him on multiple occasions….. I figured the best way to challenge myself was by completing something extreme and a lot harder than I am used to.”

Leaving on Monday, 17th July, Sam is intending to cycle from his home in Oslo to Poole, Dorset where other family members reside.  His intended route is shown below.

An estimated distance of 2,200 kilometres (over 1,360 miles), Sam aims to complete the trip within 14 days, averaging 128km per day, stopping only for overnight stays.

As stated on the poster, Sam will be visiting Broadwindsor and in particular, The White Lion in the first week of August, to personally thank local supporters and share his experiences.

You can scan the QR code on the poster above or click HERE to visit Sam’s Just Giving page and make your donation to support the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

We wish you safe travels and good luck with your endeavour Sam! 🙂

Headteacher Leaving Broadwindsor Primary School

The Governing Body at Broadwindsor Primary School have released the news that Mr. Philip Smith, Headteacher has made the personal decision to step back from headship at this time in order to pursue new projects and challenges.

All are sorry to see him go. The Governors commented: “His positive leadership and enabling approach has seen the school progress in many ways both in terms of the open and inclusive environment the school has become and in terms of the learning opportunities the school provides. He leaves the school in a very strong position. I am sure you join us in wishing Mr Smith well on the next phase of his career and future.

Mr Smith wanted to thank the whole learning community, staff, pupils, parents and wider community for their amazing support they have given him during the time he has been here and especially the challenging times throughout the Covid pandemic. He also wanted to reassure everyone that he will continue to lead the school and support the leadership transition in a professional manner.

The Governing Body has already embarked on the task of recruiting a new Headteacher for the school. Governors are being supported by Dorset Council and the Salisbury Diocese in the recruitment process and it is anticipated that this will be completed in May for a new Headteacher to be in place for September.

Chairman of the P.T.A. Martin Burt commented: Mr. Smith has had a fantastic influence on the whole school.  His hard work and dedication as head teacher has had a positive impact on the children, teaching staff and parents alike.  Mr. Smith leaves big shoes to fill and we wish him the best of luck in the future.

Goodbye & Good Luck!

…to Vikki & Spike, now ex-landlords of Broadwindsor’s pub, The White Lion.

Vikki and Spike are off to pastures new, closer to family at The New Inn, Park Lane Off Church Street, Blagdon, Bristol, BS40 7SB. The venue appears very attractive situated by Blagdon lake and several locals have already declared promises to take a trip to visit them and of course, all will be welcomed.

Thank you so much Spike and Vikki for everything you have contributed to our village while you have been here. You have been an invaluable part of our community. You will be sorely missed but we all wish you both wealth, health and prosperity in your new venture.

What’s happening to the pub?

The Parish Council is waiting to hear back from Palmers Brewery re: negotiations of the building becoming a community run pub: initial village feedback would indicate the situation is fraught with problems as anyone taking over is subject to Palmers’ rules, ales and pricing. Click HERE to view the latest local  news at the time of publishing…. we wait.

Where will people go?

The nearest pubs out of the village are:

  • The Knapp in Beaminster.
  • The Royal Oak in Drimpton.
  • The Admiral Hood in Mosterton.
  • The New Inn in Stoke Abbott.
