Quick fixes to speeding up your broadband during lockdown.

Dorset Community Action have published the following information: Quick fixes to speeding up your broadband during lockdown.

Trying to work or school from home can be a nightmare if you have slow broadband, however, help could be at hand. Digital Dorset is highlighting potential quick fixes to speed up your broadband.

In the first instance check if you can get an upgrade. Some areas in Dorset have received full fibre but the improvement in speed is not automatic – you have to sign up for an upgrade. To see if you can upgrade click HERE.

If your broadband speeds are less than 10 Mbps you could be entitled to help from BT/OFCOM’S Universal Service Obligation (USO). The USO either offers you a 4G Home Hub solution or subsidy towards full fibre if you live in a 4G blackspot. The 4G Home Hub is the quickest solution as fibre can take a while to be installed. For more information on the USO – Click HERE.

You can still get a 4G Home Hub even if your speeds are greater than 10 Mbps from a range of providers.

What is 4G home broadband?

This is a portable, and sometimes more affordable, alternative to regular broadband 4G broadband, is just like the regular broadband found in most homes – you receive a steady internet connection, you can connect all your devices and you pay a monthly fee. However, unlike regular internet which runs through cables and Wi-Fi signals, 4G broadband works in the same way as your phone, operating through a SIM card and mobile signals. This means you don’t need a phone line; you don’t need to pay set-up fees and you can take it on the go. You should also be able to receive it relatively quickly.

If you live in a poor mobile connectivity area the 4G solution may not work. However, don’t just go by your current mobile phone deal as some mobile providers have a better network than others. Find a list of 4G home broadband providers HERE.

Satellite broadband

If 4G is no good for your property, then satellite broadband could be another option. It uses a satellite dish to provide two-way access to broadband services but speeds which used to be lower, have improved with download speeds of up to 30 Mbps available.

The main advantage of satellite broadband is that it can be provided virtually anywhere in the world, so long as you have a clear line of sight to the south generally. There are satellite broadband providers in Dorset and several local companies who fit it.

Broadband too expensive?

If the cost of broadband is out of your reach, help could be available. People receiving means tested benefits can apply for the BT Basic service, which provides a phone line and broadband for around £10 per month. More information available on BT Basic HERE.
Virgin Media also offers a £15 month deal for those on Universal Credit register for essential broadband – Click HERE for more information.
Virgin Media Mobile phone operators have also been launching unlimited data SIM card deals via schools for children in receipt of free school meals. The applications are generally done via the schools. If you think you could be entitled to help contact your school office and ask them about unlimited SIM-card deals. Find out more on How to Get Free Data for Home Schooling During Lockdown – Click HERE.

Fixed Penalty Notice in Force For Irresponsible Dog Owners

The Dorset Council wide Dog related Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) came into force on the 1 January 2021. During that first month Dorset Council focused on advice and guidance to dog-owners explaining the new rules. The new rules were published on this website on 29th December 2020 – click HERE to read or re-read them.

The PSPO places restrictions on dog owners in control of their dogs. These restrictions include clearing up dog fouling and proper disposal of the waste in any open space. On certain land dogs are not allowed on marked sports pitches or enclosed children’s play areas or are required to be on lead, such as in cemeteries, formal gardens etc. There are also dog restrictions on some beaches relating to certain times of the year, see the map below for beach locations.

Dorset CouncilFrom yesterday (February 1st) if the rules are broken, fixed penalty notices (FPN) may be issued by enforcement officers. These can also be served by post if a witness provides details of the dog owner, such as their address, or their vehicle registration number and are willing to provide a suitable witness statement.
The current penalty level is set in legislation as £100 to be paid within 28 days. Early payment, within 14 days, will reduce this to £75.

To read more on the Dog Protection PSPO – click HERE

For more detailed information on where, when and what the restrictions are, if any, at Dorset’s Dog Friendly beaches – please click HERE.

You Need A Reasonable Excuse Else Stay Home

Stay Home. Save lives. The new variant of COVID-19 is spreading fast. If you go out, you can spread it. People will die. You must not leave or be outside of your home except where you have a ‘reasonable excuse’.

You should follow this guidance immediately. This is the law.

What is a reasonable excuse?

Clicking on the links in the text below will take you the relative Government page with more detail.
The Government website states that a ‘reasonable excuse’ includes:

Work:

You can only leave home for work purposes where it is unreasonable for you to do your job from home. This includes, but is not limited to, people who work within critical national infrastructure, construction or manufacturing that require in-person attendance

Volunteering:

You can also leave home to provide voluntary or charitable services. You must volunteer from home unless it is not reasonably possible for you to do so.

Essential activities:

You can leave home to buy things at shops or obtain services where necessary. You may also leave your home to do these things on behalf of a disabled or vulnerable person or someone self-isolating.

Education and childcare:

You can only leave home for education, registered childcare, and supervised activities for children where the child is eligible to attend. Access to education and children’s activities for school-aged pupils is restricted. See further information on education and childcare. You can continue existing arrangements for contact between parents and children where they live apart. If you live in a household with anyone aged under 14, you can also form a childcare bubble.

Meeting others and care:

You can leave home:

  • to visit people in your support bubble ( if you are legally permitted to form one)
  • to provide informal childcare for children under 14 as part of a childcare bubble (for example, to enable parents to work, not to enable social contact between adults)
  • to provide care for disabled or vulnerable people
  • to provide emergency assistance
  • to attend a support group (of up to 15 people)
  • for respite care where that care is being provided to a vulnerable person or a person with a disability, or is a short break in respect of a looked-after child.

Exercise

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. You should maintain social distancing. See the exercising section.

Tales from the Phone Box Library

The weather is certainly not conducive to more Music From The Square Window and both Julie Andrews and village resident Margery Hookings need a well earned break.  From music, Margery has focused on reading and has a new Lockdown project on the go to keep the spirit of reading in the village alive and connect as book lovers in the community.

Broadwindsor’s Book Exchange at the telephone box by Bernards’ Place became a book exchange early in the first Lockdown of 2020.  With content for all ages, it has proven very popular indeed.

Love Reading! So much so that Margery now invites you to submit your book reviews on books that you have already read from the book exchange or a book you are planning to donate.
She will initially create a blog or a podcast her “Tales from the Phone Box Library” on her site MaddieGrigg.co.uk. When enough have been collected, Broadwindsor.org will create a page on the village website for them all to be available.
Later, Margery will include Kindle books and others you’ve bought, especially if you’ve really enjoyed them.  If you’d like to contribute, please email: margery.hookings@gmail.com.

Reviews and previews don’t have to be long or intricate. Here are a few guidelines for those reviewing:

  • Reviews should not exceed 200 words in total
  • Please include:
    1. Title
    2. Author
    3. Genre
    4. Body of Review (no spoilers please).
    5. Would you recommend/not recommend?
  • Send all reviews to margery.hookings@gmail.com

Space is obviously very limited in the telephone box – please do not just dump books or boxes in there.  The conditions are too damp to accept journals and magazines, so no more of those please.  Thanks go to Ruthie Stevens & Wendy Shields – who has now removed all the cobwebs 🙂 – for keeping the telephone box tidy.

We are all aware of the rules – Please act responsibly

A Request Re: Bernards’ Place

Chris Edgerley is making excellent progress building the wall by the play area in Bernards’ Place.  He is asking if anyone has a large ammonite or anything that could go into the wall as a feature, you will see the picture of the stone carved horse’s head which was donated and has been placed in the wall and is very impressive.

Also. . .

The Treasurer of the Comrades Hall Committee has need of a smart phone to allow him to do his online banking.  If anyone has a redundant one they no longer need and could donate – please get in touch asap. Telephone David Leader on: 01308 868275 or 07867 608652.  Thank you.
